[SPELL] Unseen Servant

Post by Elke » Tue Aug 18, 2009 7:59 pm

From the SRD:

Unseen Servant
Conjuration (Creation)
Level: Brd 1, Sor/Wiz 1
Components: V, S, M
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Effect: One invisible, mindless, shapeless servant
Duration: 1 hour/level
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No

An unseen servant is an invisible, mindless, shapeless force that performs simple tasks at your command. It can run and fetch things, open unstuck doors, and hold chairs, as well as clean and mend. The servant can perform only one activity at a time, but it repeats the same activity over and over again if told to do so as long as you remain within range. It can open only normal doors, drawers, lids, and the like. It has an effective Strength score of 2 (so it can lift 20 pounds or drag 100 pounds). It can trigger traps and such, but it can exert only 20 pounds of force, which is not enough to activate certain pressure plates and other devices. It can’t perform any task that requires a skill check with a DC higher than 10 or that requires a check using a skill that can’t be used untrained. Its speed is 15 feet.

The servant cannot attack in any way; it is never allowed an attack roll. It cannot be killed, but it dissipates if it takes 6 points of damage from area attacks. (It gets no saves against attacks.) If you attempt to send it beyond the spell’s range (measured from your current position), the servant ceases to exist.
Material Component

A piece of string and a bit of wood.

We already have the components! ;)

What I'm suggesting is a servitor summoned temporarily to fill a pet slot. It can't leave the area you summoned it into and disappears when you also leave the area. It can specifically use the 'cook', 'bury' (but not dig), open/close, lock/unlock (with key in inventory), fill, drop and empty. It can't attack, and is destroyed if any sort of combat happens.

Because I don't want to carry a spade? ;)

I like this idea a lot, but more if you could toggle it to do behaviours autonomously. It would add a layer of prestige and flavour if you unlocked this kind of thing at higher levels. It makes sense to me to see the really powerful wizards or other characters walking around and just having doors recognise this and open in front of them and shut themselves behind them, the servant is a way to accomplish this. (Plus opening doors can get annoying, especially if keys are involved. Get key from x, unlock y, open y, walk y, close y, lock y, put key x.)
Follow your heart, yes.. but use your head, too. Take to every task with zeal and passion, but try to pair it with sage and discerning execution.
