Additional Cart

This topic is a spin-off from another topic about having a third pet option. I would love to see them add the ability to have a second cart. I am not sure what the code changes behind this would need to be. But if you can have two pack horses, I think it only makes sense that you should be able to have a cart attached to both of them.
Any thoughts?

You know, I'm going to warp your topic in a heartbeat by saying this Algon. Sorry.
I think really the better option would be to get housing back in to the mix so storerooms and what not can be put to use. Obviously with restrictions so people with just a few hundred hours played aren't applying, but for those that show they've been around that option might be the best solution. Yes I realize the work and that it's taking up qbits to do it, but I think it might be a bit better than putting in an additional cart.

The way carts have been coded means that it is would be extremely difficult to add a second one, so it will almost certainly never happen.

I knew I wasn't imagining talking about this several years ago with Dalvyn and a few others and it was turned down due to coding issues.
A follow up question... What are the chances of expanding the current storage capacity of current in-game carts? Please, please, please?

Personally, I think if you can't fit your stuff in a cart, you have too much stuff. I agree w/Dovan, dwelling update is the way to go.

Merchant hater! Kidding,

I am all for dwellings getting a revival as well, would be nice to see Settlestone get a few more residents... but it has a negative effect on PC merchants. We cannot set the prices our shopkeepers would sell items for, relying on the coded 'assumed' prices. I almost never sell things at standard prices, for various reasons, relying on face-to-face sales out of the old cart.
Of course if shopkeeper code is being looked at so we can set our own prices in our own shops...

You don't have to have a shopkeeper to sell things. You could have a warehouse to store your things and a cart with only the items you are selling that trip to take from place to place.

In theory, thats good. However, personal experience has shown carts fill up fast if you try and sell a variety of wares... heck even if you are just selling one type of item, like armour or spell components. Anyone that has seen Gilain's cart knows its not clutter of 20 of this and 20 of that. Its usually a bunch of single items and a few small piles of things like spell components. That thing is almost always riding the capacity limit (though not lately).
If you are saying only carry one of each item you want to sell and leave the rest in a warehouse, that sort of kills the need of a cart since you can carry such a small amount of items in a bag on yourself or a packhorse. Not to mention completely unrealistic for wares like spell components. And personally, the image of selling items in Waterdeep and saying "oh, yeah I have that in the warehouse in MH. I'll be right back" scares me.
Again, not against housing. I love player houses. I just don't like player shops coding.

Maybe I'm missing the point, but it seems to me that if you can carry almost as much in bags as you can in a cart, why not fill the cart with full bags?

. Me too. But I do like the idea of "I don't have those wares on this trip. This was my armor trip, I'll be bringing the jester tights shipment next month."

Safe bet we are on different pages on this topic, so maybe we'll never agree. But, I'll give it a try.
General example of various merchant carts I've seen... A standard full cart consists of display items of tradecrafts, spell components (often stored in bags in the cart), metals/gems (also usually in bags), and various niknaks they has gathered to sell. These are items the merchant plans to sell that day. Very little is overstocking or 50 of XX taking up all the room. On a personal note, I have stopped using my cart for certain big items. Besides a few display pieces, I never have armor in my cart because it doesn't take many suits of armor to fill a cart just by themselves, let alone with any other wares in the cart.

Dwarves in jester tights, thanks for that image.
I believe you want merchants to only fill carts with one type of item each trip, right? I did that once upon a time, still do in a way since metal is lighter than finished trade goods. I shifted to the Wal-mart approach, like mentioned above, because its what my customers were interested in. XXX didn't just want to buy a lich skull today, they also wanted 20 pieces of titanium, a dagger, a plate mail belt, and some gem powder. Not saying I couldn't take your approach and say "I'll catch you next time", I merely took the route of pleasing the customer, filled the cart, and never looked back.
In a sense, a merchant PC is competing with NPCs. XXX can go to Waterdeep and get 10 different items from NPC shops or wait for PC merchant to do one (or more depending on weight limits) trips to their warehouse for the items. NPCs will cost more (usually), but the item is there. PC will cost less (usually), but could take several RL days to see that PC again. Thus the Wal-mart cart approach. I like your approach, but it didn't work in practice, in my experience at least.

Carts revision is something still on my to-do list, and the problem at the time was with weight limits. I think while I was overwhelmed, Mask did increase these, though. Is it still the case that carts can carry a very low weight limit? (Less than a buff dude like Selveem can carry in his hands?)

On an average day, Gilain can carry everything in his cart, plus normal gear, and still not reach his weight limit. He was built from the ground up as a smith/merchant and his stats (and certain feats) reflect that. He is mostly limited by how much his bags can hold or how many bags he has with him. Granted, Gilain is an old boy with glory-feed stats, but its not unusual for him to pull his cart when his mule/pony get tired or simply empty the cart, leave the cart at the stables, and carry stuff for long trips.
Again, Gilain, and Selveem I would imagine, are unusual cases. No harm in wishful thinking though and I would love to one day see carts hold more than Gilain can pack around. Feel free to PM me Raona (or any builder for that matter), if you need info on Gilain's stats.
