The Market Square and You
The Market Square and You
Hello there! I just wanted to make a small request, if you don't mind hearing me out.
With as fast pace (or sometimes snail-pace) of the market, and with people coming and going at all times, I'd like to bring it to the attention of my fellow players that wandering in and out of the Market Square repeatedly with your weapons drawn can be quite spammy and a bit annoying, for a lack of a better word. Please keep this in mind, especially when you are asked not only by the market guard to sheath your weapon, but by fellow players. I'm not saying that it should never happen, because I know for a fact that I've forgotten quite a bit in my time, but running back and forth through the Square and having the guard scold you each time is less than ideal. Also, ICly, there are lots of people in the Market, common fold, children, elderly. What if someone got hurt because you're running around with your sword brandished?
So to sum it all up, please remember to keep it sheathed, especially if you are going to make several trips through the market. Thanks a ton!
P.S.~ This isn't an attack on anyone! I promise!

Re: The Market Square and You
To be fair, I think the 'reminder' is rather spammy to begin with. I really would like it to more realistic and be a small percentage chance the Guard will catch you. This, too, can be distributed to other guards as well to help correct our behaviors as a whole (including mine! I forget often, too, but normally remember by the time I get to MS!).

Re: The Market Square and You
The reminder is only spammy when it happens more then once, its only one line and lets face it, it's a lot less spammy then people drinking the fountain. BUT we can solve it by having the guard just whisper/tell the character/s that wield a weapon, that way only the wielder of the weapon gets a spam and maybe have an echo that just states the guard talks to %n

Re: The Market Square and You
Depends on the echo. Some of what he says is humorous, but a lot more lines than one.
And, I would still like the other guards to remind people, too. It reinforces the learning.

Re: The Market Square and You
In times of war, or when Waterdeep is under attack, everyone will be running around with weapons and people in groups running around, THAT would get spammy, I get why you are saying it but on the chance WD is under attack, it would get annoying and ruin the RP of the city being under attackSelveem wrote:And, I would still like the other guards to remind people, too. Re: The Market Square and You
Huh... there's a thought. Change the guard's warning to a tell script, rather than a say script. Target still gets the point, but it doesn't spam the rest of the market.

Re: The Market Square and You
The spam is good. If someone walks into the market brandishing a weapon, I want to know it!
Re: The Market Square and You
but in a busy market, can't really notice someone wielding a dagger or small weapon. If your in a conversation with someone, your attention mostly is on that person.Anguin wrote:The spam is good. If someone walks into the market brandishing a weapon, I want to know it!

Re: The Market Square and You
I do not like the spam, especially when an important RP is going on. Breaks the mood of as bard's song/story when you get the echo part way through it, for example. Tell script would solve that. Plus, folks in the square tend to ask people to put their weapons away, if they notice it.

Re: The Market Square and You
Since we are talking about the square perhaps a different drop off point from Faredale as well and recall point. Was in a rp when someone was dropping every five minutes or so.

Re: The Market Square and You
Let's not forget the Market wasn't set up to be the "RP in-spot" but the center of the city - a place where newbies recall to, and a place close to the newbie temple which is easy for new players to associate their surroundings by. "Shop xxx is xxx paces xxx from my (former)recall".
I'll admit I don't care for the weapon warning message, it seems futile to me the guard would even notice every single time someone is holding let's say, a small dagger in their palm. But I'd rather not see a thread about "What not to do in MS" -- while it may be YOUR chosen roleplay spot, FK has thousands upon thousands of rooms so let's not try to regulate what can and cannot happen in one of them merely because it's the spot most chosen by players. (Things like recalls, returns from cities via the harp etc.)
Let's explore! Don't enable the Market of Waterdeep to be the ultimate no-traffic zone that people never want to leave!

On a dark coastal Trade Way, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of the ocean, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night.
There he stood in the gateway
I heard the guard give a yell
This could be Celestia, or this could be the hells.
Then he lit up a torch, and he showed me the way.
There were voices in the city,
I thought I heard them say..
Welcome to the Waterdeep Market,
Such a lovely place,
Such a lovely face.
Plenty of room at the Waterdeep Market,
Any time of year, you can find it here..

First of all... That was hilarious Isaldur!
Ok... second... this could all be fixed and all the arguing ended by the guards simply doing what they do when you try to enter the square mounted. Just have the guards stop the person, and tell them you must sheath your weapon so that no one loses an eye. Or something to that sort. No spam, no constant tell, the person is reminded, and this long conversation flutters away! lol Just an idea!

Re: The Market Square and You
I would agree with this, but Waterdeep's market square (make no mistake, other cities have them too) already is regulated. Not only is it the only place that will harass you for carrying a weapon (ICly, you'd think every noncombat location would do that), but it's also the only spot where you get in trouble for riding a mount through a crowd of people. I'm pretty sure it's also the only spot where the guard on duty magically knows your position in a church, and I've even been told ICly that invisibility effects are cancelled in only that room of the market (not that I can confirm that one).Mele wrote:But I'd rather not see a thread about "What not to do in MS" -- while it may be YOUR chosen roleplay spot, FK has thousands upon thousands of rooms so let's not try to regulate what can and cannot happen in one of them merely because it's the spot most chosen by players. The fact of the matter is that Waterdeep's market square is a massive hotspot for RP (the sitting around and doing nothing kind, specifically), and the game's code recognizes this fact. You can't blame players for playing the game the way it was made.
"Let all on whom Her light falls be welcome if they desire. Trust in Her radiance, and know that all love alive under Her light shall know her blessing. Promote acceptance and tolerance. See all other beings as equals."
Re: The Market Square and You
As you read in the entire context of the post I mention it's the recall spot for new players/characters and where they learn to get their baring. Thus, moving things like recall, return from Faerdale or the harp or wherever more have you are not steps we need to take to enable an utterly spam free zone when it helps those new to us and there are many more(and more exciting) places available with none of this. Even if you feel like other things implemented in the Market are calling you there - the less spammy things are actually quite helpful to others.

Re: The Market Square and You
I really didn't mean to make this a "hot" debate, and for that I'm sorry.
All I really wanted to say was since you are being asked by the guard to put your weapon away, and you know he's going to ask, please sheath your weapon.

Re: The Market Square and You
From an IC point of view...
The Lawmakers wrote the law that no weapons would be allowed in the market square, so until the Lords of Waterdeep change that it's no weapons in the square and the guard should still stop people who do have a weapon drawn.
Don't agree with changing the location for Faerdale drop off, there is a lowbie quest there and new players will find it easier being dropped in the square because it's an easy reference point.
