Climbing equipment

There's some equipment that makes you a better climber while you have it equipped. This is true of both some ropes and some grappling hooks, but the latter seem like they should be more effective, especially given how much they (should) weigh. I'd suggest the following:

Increase the weight of i110116.
Make it clearer in the description of i100002 that a rope is part and parcel of it.
Make the two grappling hooks boost climb more, perhaps 1.5x the ropes for i110116, assuming it is a smaller and lighter hook, and 2x for the big boss hook.

This is what happens when code geeks get to play.

Nice. I never knew the climbing gear did anything...

I haven't ran into many areas that require climbing, but it would be cool if more areas included the skill (swim too). I want to play around with Spider Climb. :)

Spider climb doesn't actually increase your climbing skill, so it doesn't help a bit in areas that check against that.

What does spider climb do? o_o

It apparently ties directly into the climb code, so you automatically succeed. But on programs that check against your climbing skill, rather than terrain that does, it does nothing.

I don't recall any areas that check against climbing skill off hand. There was at least one, but I changed it to EX_CLIMB some time last year.

The only one I'm aware of is a very old area, the room is "A winding path in the Troll Mountains".

That area has some nasty programs relating to climbing (i.e. clearly designed to make it more difficult), so I only modified them to include the isaffected2($n) == spider_climb check in addition to their original passing criteria. I did make that condition guarantee success.

Thread's a little old, but rather add to it than start a new one.

I fell, and since I have to wait for the wounds to heal, I decided to search 'climb' on the forums to kill time.

Harroghty's post has me curious about something...

Does this apply to the 'gorge' section of Mithril Halls? I almost constantly see the echo "your armor hinders your attempt at climb" when I move around this area via the normal direction exit commands (hence the fall damage). Nothing prompting me to use the 'climb' command specifically.

That room is EX_CLIMB and as such, rolls against your climb skill to traverse it safely. Climb is a passive skill - you never use 'climb'. Any armor heavier than cloth will hinder your climb skill - the heavier the armor, the more severe the penalty.

Sorry, mis-phrased the post. Did not mean to imply one needed to type "climb" to move. Was curious if that entire area was indeed functioning under the Ex_CLIMB skill-check, or if the echo was misfiring. Luckily, you answered what was in my head, even though what I typed didn't make sense.
