Is joining a guild like multiclassing in 3E? WIll I gain levels in thief or is joining a guild just for bonuses to skills and RP value?

For the Rogue class, joining a guild will have one of two possible outcomes. Either he/she will join a Thief guild and become a thief, or he/she will be admitted to the Bards guild and become a bard.

In this respect, joining a guild will allow you access to new skills. However, it is not multi-classing per se. Merely the change from being an untrained rogue into tsomething else. This is similar to the path a warrior might take, in that he is largely unskilled until deciding where his path lies... fighting man, ranger or holy warrior
Remember, should you encounter an angry Dragon and your only company is a Halfling...
...you do not need to run faster than the Dragon, only the halfling.

It's a wolverine, not a skunk... sheesh

If I did not join such a guild would those skills not be open to me?
or would they simply be harder to attain?
