[Quests] Formation Functionality for Following Mobs

I'd like first to point out that this is in no way a top-of-the-list sort of suggestion. I only think that, if it could be implemented in the future, it could add a good bit to the game.
There are several quests throughout the game in which the PC is asked to save a mob, bring him/her to a certain location, etc. Though I haven't actually tested this for fear of breaking one of my quests, I would imagine that AOE spells cast by the PC would affect such NPCs, as no formation is created, though the mob follows the player character. My suggestion is that such mobs be given the ability to join the PC's group, either by accepting an invitation or joining automatically when the quest begins/when the PC meets the mob. I could see this having two benefits. First, no harm done to the NPC with AOE type spells, and, for those like me who usually cast buffs and protections on the mob just for RP purposes, "mass" spells could be used also to affect the mob, instead of having to mem two copies of the same spell.
Maybe this wouldn't be a good idea, though. I mean, I take the group to stand for the actual *combat* formation used in battle, so it's not like most of this sort of NPC would really be part of that, but then again, if a caster can effectively choose whom to harm with his/her AOEs and whom to include in his/her mass spells, it would make sense that the NPC not be completely disregarded.
Any thoughts on this?
