[Feat] Soloist
[Feat] Soloist
You have proven yourself more than capable of taking on challenges alone, whether through necessity or training you fly solo better than most. As a result, many of the skills not often learned by your peers are now available to you, even if progressing with them takes a bit longer.
FK doesn't have cross-class skills available but there are times when certain skills from certain classes are necessary. It would be cool if we could take this feat and have other class skills opened up for us. The balance is that they cannot be Grand Mastered and improve at 1/2 the normal rate for the class. I see it opening up both new RP and it takes some of the burden off the game where player base is concerned. You still can and typically need to group with other PCs, there's never going to be anything that compares to that, but this feat and the skills it would open up could make it easier for those that have a hard time finding groups when the PCs online are limited or when they're in a part of the world that few travel to.

Re: [Feat] Soloist
Two questions about this proposal: why wouldn't everyone take this feat? Second, what would the prerequisites be for the single most powerful feat in the game?
Jamais arriere.
Re: [Feat] Soloist
Wouldn't that be for skills and spells only and not for feats?
Justice is not neccesarily honourable, it is a tolerable business, in essence you tolerate honour until it impedes justice, then you do what is right.

The feat proposed is about skills in fact.Gwain wrote:Wouldn't that be for skills and spells only and not for feats?
Re: [Feat] Soloist
I'm with Hrosskell on this one. The difference between master and grandmaster is in most cases probably not that large, so the first catch to this feat isn't really balancing. And Even were a skill to progress slower than it normally would... Well, I'm one of those crazy people who will gladly grind for countless hours to get a skill where I want it - a slower rate wouldn't really hinder me at all - and this would, I'd expect, just encourage me to do even more things on my own than I tend to do already.
Presumably a feat point spent on this feat would only open up one otherwise unlearnable skill to the PC, so there'd at least be a limit where a priest couldn't get the whole list of rogue skills, f.e., but still... I'm imagining a fighter with.. Turn undead? Or a priest who can now dodge and parry on top of heal... Or a wizard who can mem twenty mirror images and learn to rescue and be the best tank.. Ever.
That's just my initial reaction on it as I understand the proposal. I very much like those items in game that give a small chance for their wearer to succeed at a skill they don't normally have, but I think this would be very overpowering.

Re: [Feat] Soloist
The idea isn't for spells or spell like abilities, such as turn undead or laying on of hands, it's for skill skills like dodge, steal, peek, rescue, and so on.
Offering up additional balancing ideas we could base the prereq on Int score and make the number of cross class skills you can learn max out using some math involving the int bonus. Could also base how knowledgeable in the skill you can become off the same score, or set it at a standard 15 skill rank or something.
I'm not sure you could use this feat to ignore the need for a group, there's plenty your class can't do alone, but if a fighter could sneak and hide even a little bit or pick a lock to save his life, well then there's something to be said for a fighter's versatility.
I'm also up for calling the feat Versatile instead of soloist.

Re: [Feat] Soloist
I have mixed feelings about this suggestion, really.
It would be nice, of course, to have access to useful skills that enable me to play my favorite class with the useful
advantages of other classes. Hide and sneak of pick lock would be something that probably every class will find to
be useful. But then... If I need a lock picked, sneak and hide somewhere , I can take a rogue with me or choose to
play a rogue, bard or a spellcaster that can turn himself/herself invisible etc.
This feat would seem to sidestep the current offering of an applied for skill outside a class with its cost of 50 glory
and a well-done appliction. Furthermore, it seems to be obliterate the motivation to call on others to adventure with
and mayhaps even the differences between classes. And I believe fighters are already very versatile and quite strong.
Cheers.

da flüstern die Gräser und wiegen sich leicht

Re: [Feat] Soloist
Well if you want to pick locks, hide, sneak, steal, peek, even a little bit, I think you can just play a thief.
Concerning rescue I think it should be a skill available to all classes, like spot and listen.

Re: [Feat] Soloist
It's a good idea that I don't think will see fruition. In tabletop you're free to pick your skills but i feel skills here for the most part have become a major factor in controlling class prowess and utility.
As a note, I don't see this 50 glory to buy a skill thing here:

I have seen characters with unusual abilities for their class but I always thought that was the result of some longterm IM acknowledged roleplay and thought doing something like that would be autorejected under applying for special powers.
I somewhat agree with the previous comment for this game. If you want to have rogue skills but still be a fighter type. Build a rogue with beefy physical stats and take med / heavy armor prof or be a dual wielding light armor fighter type with rogue class. you'll lose out on doorbash/ fourth / fifth attack and something else I can't remember but if you value those skills enough its more than a fair trade.
As for rescue it should either be restricted to warrior classes alone, to boost their utility or be available to everyone because why wouldn't someone have the chance to jump in the way if they wanted to?

I trained up double-edged bananas because the uber-plantain of doom I scored from the beehive quest was the best weapon in the game. Now it's being treated like a bug and they have gimped its damage! That's not fair! My character is ruined!
