Long Spike Greater Weapon skills in Mithril Halls

Post by Jarngron » Fri May 27, 2016 10:50 pm

I propose adding the Greater Weapon Focus and Greater Weapon Specialization feats for Long Spikes in the Mithril Halls Fighter's Guild.

To cite the balance for this, the Greater Weapon feats are available in other primary schools to reflect the local style.

It stands to reason that as a primary Combat Guild, whereas King Bruenor Battlehammer himself may teach these feats for axes - one of the instructors should very well teach warhammers. Thus far the areas that do offer these feats are forbidden to Dwarves leaving me to question how exactly Moradin's Hammers receive their training, and I believe this is a sound suggestion!

Without being too specific, I have joined multiple fighter guilds and only 1 in my experience actually offers all the greater feats. The rest offer a smattering of greater focus, and greater specialisation without actually giving out all the options you would need.

Since these are what I would consider core feats for a fighter, I'd be against them all being grouped in one place. But I can get behind, greater focus and weapon spec in one and leaving greater weapon spec to be found elsewhere.
I trained up double-edged bananas because the uber-plantain of doom I scored from the beehive quest was the best weapon in the game. Now it's being treated like a bug and they have gimped its damage! That's not fair! My character is ruined!

While I can respect the principle of having things split, this is the training ground for the Hammers of Moradin we are discussing.

It would be nice in theory to have advancement or quests, however given that there is nothing currently availed, and seeing as there is no -better- place to find fighters with the long spikes than a sect of Dwarves devoted to the single holy weapon of their deity?

Well, in short, there is no better place to learn this, and as you may notice other primary combat schools offer a single weapontype of focus.

The Mithril Halls Combat School does not offer any, yet.

We'll have to agree to disagree. I already think the one school that offers all of these feats and more for two weapon types is bad enough though possibly necessary due to who it caters to and the limited access they already have. There are a lot of religious and ratial centers that would have some rp reason to have all the specialistt teachers and spells grouped together but do not because it goes against the MUD's policy where trainers are concerned in my opinion.

It's the same reason that very few spells are actually taught at the school of wonder and at each wizard guild and I'd say percentage of time wise, it's a lot easier to find most fighter feats than it is to find even the majority of spells.

Since I created both a fighter and a spell caster I can say on the sword guy I've found all but one of the feats necessary to specialize him with what I'd consider not a mainstream weapon. As in, it isn't a long sword, or a great sword and this weapon type seems strangely rarely given out in percentage of quest rewards i've earned. I've played this character perhaps some 600 hours. On the caster whom i've played for 2600 hours some third of the spells he uses regularly not even known were learned from other players.

Tangentially: why don't you apply to build a new dwarven settlement, like citadel Adbar for example, and put the feats there?

Eh... I've had that answer given to me plenty of times, and seen it given to others just as often. I have to admit I don't think it's a very fair answer. There are tons of possible and legitimate reasons why a person might not wish to apply to build an area in order to get something they want added to the game, especially if it's a pretty simple something.

That said, I'd like to note for what little it's worth that I agree with Yemin on adding all four of these feats to one guild. And believe, I've been looking for these same feats on my dwarf for four hundred hours--really want to find them!--lol. There's really only one guild in game I know of that could be reasonably labeled a one-stop shop. But I expect that's due to the lack in support in general for the characters to whom it most commonly caters. I would love to see greater weapon focus and *maybe* even lesser weapon spec for these weapons added to MH, but I think including greater weapon spec and possibly even its lesser version would be going overboard. (Clearly, I'm undecided about lesser weapon spec :P).

There are, however, also plenty of areas that come to mind which are sufficiently difficult to get to and appropriate to the weapon type to host lesser and greater weapon spec training for long spikes.

To clarify, there are indeed other schools that do offer these feats (and more, as stated). Which is why the Mithril Halls Combat School, being a primary school, should have its single weapontype emphasized for style - similar to how other primary combat schools have -1- weapontype available.

This is currently lacking from the Mithril Halls because it was designed to allow King Bruenor to teach the Greater Weapon Feats for both types of axes.

After 700 hours of play, the guilds that do offer these incredulous amounts of feats (which by the by only imply that there should be some balance here, by comparison) are not accessible due to their stat requirements. Between the arbitrary stat requirements and localization (starting areas) it's not available -at all-.

In fact, the Mithril Halls combat school - for its price - is not really useful to anyone seeing as it has no dominant feats, only lesser ones which are available in any-odd Temple of Waterdeep.

It would be just as suitable to have a new NPC within Moradin's altar, for faithed members, but the problem here is a total lack of these feats being available to Dwarves - thanks for your input Areia!

I do however think it is rather missing the forest for the trees to compare a guild that has everything-and-more to one which has so little! Logically there must be some equivocal.

As-is the most reputable warhammer wielders in Faerun are done a very strong disservice. One might argue, that to broaden their skills they must seek exploration and application, however this would suit being self-taught: not paying gold to learn the local tricks and styles.

By all means building a new area is well and good. In this scenario however there is a blatant oversight to the feat availability for the Hammers of Moradin, and this is probably best remedied by making the Combat School actually be as reputable as the recruiter implied for the cost of membership. So far I'm inclined to call that Dwarf a liar!
