Could paintings and other home furniture be given a program so people can *set and detach them from their dwellings as they please so they save past reboots?
It seems like a move that would save time and effort in the longterm and make the process more dynamic. Perhaps in large make the few furniture vendors I've seen only sell to dwelling owners as a control measure against rampant buying and setting of these items in improbably, unallowable places if that's a concern.
Another, simpler way to do this would simply be to make a couple of rooms or under the new dwelling system, make the main room a storage room so any furniture / decoration dropped there sticks around.
Thanks for reading. If there is already a way to go about this outside apping for it, I'm unaware so let me know.

Paintings and decoration.
I trained up double-edged bananas because the uber-plantain of doom I scored from the beehive quest was the best weapon in the game. Now it's being treated like a bug and they have gimped its damage! That's not fair! My character is ruined!

These are all characteristics of the dwelling system already. The accommodations (Talos's recent project) are different and separate - more like renting an apartment than buying a house.

So to clarify, the old dwelling system has these features and options but the current one does not?

What currently is offered is not the dwelling system, it is for accommodations. The difference is that accommodations have only those features outlined in Talos's post.

Oh, understood.
Since we're on the topic and out of interest. Why was the former dwelling system abandoned?

At a casual count, seven of 33 dwellings are occupied (the PC owner has logged in within the last three months). We're really talking maybe five different accounts. I can't speak for Mask's decision to shut down dwellings at the time, but from where I'm standing now the obvious problem is what happens to those dwellings when the PC stops playing? This has numerous implications from wasted effort, to wasted space, to what happens when that PC returns. There are some solutions to get around those things, but thus the accommodations system is a way to begin testing one of those out.

Re: Paintings and decoration.
I thought it would be something like that but didn't want to assume.
Makes sense. My vote would be for these empty spaces to generate hobo mobs that take up residence if the PC doesn't log in for more than 6 months.
Something like the current NPCs around these days that drop RMIs when killed and put a generic you killed bla bla on the character who finished it so there's value in new players going to seek these abandoned homes out and kill that Hedge witch, hag, manticore or rogue demon that's taken up residence.
Well, just throwing the idea out there but eh. Thanks for the answers thus far.

Accommodations are a sort of trial/beginning as Harroghty has said, thus it comes with a lot of caveats and limitations. Objects can be added to the furniture pool here, for eventual uploading into the game.
