Sehanine vs Selune

So, I have been researching something about the Seldarine, in order to make my elven RP more believable, and my PC now often offers prayers to Sehanine at nighttime, and much of the things people say about Selune, she says about Sehanine.

This leads me to my question.

To humans, Selune is the moon. To elves, Sehanine. Which do we use? In RP, how do we rectify the contradiction?

This seems confusing, but basically, I was just asking for clarification concerning this Goddess, how one would approach RP towards her, and how one would answer awkward questions about the moon and the two goddesses.

Any input would be helpful. Thanks!

Well, you pretty much summed it up yourself. To humans, Selune is the Moon. To elves, it's Sehanine. So, I would say it's safe to say that you could rp praying to Sehanine as an elf at nighttime.

What about Elves that follow Selune?

Belief relies on what gods are avialable and what gods exist. Remeber that one is free to worship whom they wish. Elves would stick to their pantheon unless they wish not to and have a reason. As would humans, dwarves, Halflings, Drow, Gnomes and Elk.

In the end it's up to rp.

But on an interesting note, as time progresses pantheons have risen and fallen and merged with each other.

On a side note... but related. It would be super if more of the Elven Pantheon were available. I know my wild elf char would be thrilled to see Rillifane as a choice! (Since it is not an option- I simply quietly RP it as her choice and leave her unfaithed ... Sad... but true.) :(

I think It is an RP predicament that there is only one choice for Elves when it comes to the Elven Pantheon ( though IMHO the "big giant head" of the pantheon is the best choice if there is only gonna be one! ROFLOL)

I must admit though, it seems far fetched to me that and Elf would follow a human God... ( especially a wild elf!!) but that is my personal RP choice. And I do not fault others for making a different choice. There are *great* benefits in being able to faith your character. I would like to know what others are doing along this line?
:)

Thanks for listening... sorry if I strayed from the the original post a bit.

Sehanine and Selune may both be goddesses of the moon, but the other parts of their portfolio are different. For example, Selune's teachings are not only that of the moon and such but of good lycanthropes, tolerence, navigation (the sea and junk like that :P) and from what I've read in Faiths and Pantheons, her followers often take in the invalid.

I could see, for example, a good lycanthrope elf serving Selune, or other elves who believe in her teachings of lycanthropy, tolerence, navigations, etc. etc. But, as Gwain said, it's all about your character's rp. :)

Yes, there's also the fact that not all elves grow up in an all-elven society. Those elves might be swayed to follow a human god because they did not get the same teachings as others. But, like has been said, it is all up to you and your characters rp.

Thank you for the reply! Let me say--- I did not mean to imply there were no choices at at all. (as there are LOADS fo human Gods to choose from. )

Also for the record I do not OPENLY RP or discuss with others ICly that my Elf follows Rillifane because I am aware that it is not permitted. I use the knowledge for her "motivations" but do not openly discuss her motivations. ( sort of like method acting... you see the result of the choice but never really are told the reason.)

My post was not meant to be derogatory... I hope it was not taken as such. :) I know that I could easily faith my elf in the game as is (there *is* a veritable buffet of Gods indeed!)*giggle*. Of course I simply choose not to faith my character based on my understanding of the wild elf. I admit I have placed limits my character because of this, but I enjoy the RP I have established with her. I was just saying it would be lovely, though clearly not a neccesity, to have more of the Elven Pantheon.

I greatly appreciate having the game to play regardless and know how much effort is put into the coding. I can appreciate the fact that there has to be a limit to everything ;)

Many Thanks,

I agree that it would be great to have a more diverse selection in the racial pantheons, but I also understand that a lot of effort goes into coding a diety. When you think of all the factors, with favor and rewards and avatars and etc, and then you have to get someone to *play* the diety...

Granted, there is some duplication of major portfolios between human and elven dieties (Selune and Sehanine = the moon, Sune and Hanali = beauty, etc). Though I also understand some players' perspective that elves woshipping human gods on Toril would proabably still be a rarity, not a common occurence (If I am wrong on this, correct me).

At the same time, worship in the non-human panheons is not the same as the way humans worship. Non-humans worship in the faith as a true pantheon, where the whole of the pantheon is revered and esteemed as a part of the faithful's worship, to each god his due for the blessings he gives.

Humans tend to be able to take or leave this diety or that diety based on everything from personal ethos to the region they grew up in. Some dieties of the Faerun pantheon are not even heard of in some regions of Faerun, and in some regions, one or two dieties have a stronghold in the community.

So, as I see it, if you want to play an elf who is true to the Elven Way, if you faith Corellon, you are in effect pledging your faith to the pantheon as a whole. If you're a Green Elf who want to reflect her tribal culture, smote a prayer to Rilifane on occaision in RP. You still maintain your faith in the pantheon, of which Corellon is still the Father.

I believe it's the Elven Pantheon of Deities.
