Protecting guild storerooms from crashes

Post by Argentia » Wed Jun 29, 2005 8:46 pm

This is something I have been thinking about for a long time now. I've noticed that many guilds have a room designated as a "storeroom" which, from previous mud experiences, I can only assume have the purpose and function of allowing players to leave equipment they don't want/need for fellow members of the guild.

My idea is, as the title suggests, protecting these rooms from crashes so that any items within do not dissapear. I am not sure if this is possible at all, but if it is, I am sure it would make players much more inclined to leave items in these rooms. I know I would love to unload some old items there for young adventurers, as my character is not inclined to sell them, but I worry that they will just dissapear with the next crash/copyover and go to waste.

Any comments, ideas?

I think once read in one of the helpfiles that some storerooms were protected as such. It said to leave a common item in there to test it. However, I can't for the life of me remember what help it was or if it actually protected against crashes or just kept them from disappearing every tick/reset.

Ah, wonderful! Thank you, I will test the guilds I belong to when I get the chance. :D

The store rooms in the temples, would they then be considered a donation spot for others to take from as they need to, or is it rather a place to put "gifts" to your God?

Store rooms I beleive are ussually where you should put unwanted equipment for others of your faith/guild to use should they need it.
Glim asks Gwain 'Can I be on the watch?!?'
Gwain raises an eyebrow.

Allright, fair enough. That brings to mind the question, what do we do with "gifts to our God"? Some temples, I have seen in the descriptions, or an actual mob priest there, telling you to leave offerings for such and such deity, but if you drop them on the floor (rp'ing putting them on the altar or whatever) they will just disapear in the next crash or reset. Or worse, someone will come along and take them. Give them to the HP of the faith? But then, that brings up more questions. 1. if you are of a umm questionable? faith, how do you know the HP won't just keep whatever object for himself, or use it as a gift to the God from him/her self? And yeah ok, that one could be an ic rp thing. But 2. What about the poor HP's, who get handed this stuff form all the people of the faith? or even sometimes people not of the faith? Do they have someplace that THEY can put this stuff? Or does it just have to take up space in their inventory/bags etc?

In my opinion, offerings to the temple should be given to the NPC high priest in this temple. If something will go to the temple, usually you won't see it added in any way code wise. So, while you can RP it being given, others won't see it. In my opinion it is perfectly fine to give it to a mob who then "loses" it in the next reset, which would mean the items were actually used for something(money to buy things, food was eaten, items maybe given to imaginary faithfuls, or anything just donated in any way to the deity)
