It would be nice if a wizard could possess the familiar, thus able to control it as if it was a player character, while meanwhile the wizard is in a meditating state and can take no actions.

Thug A points at the bound and helpless man on the ground, "So, we slit him or need him alive."
Thug B shrugs.
An owl flies in from the north.
Thug B shouts, "What by the Masked Shadows is that?"
Thug A replies, leveling his blade, "'Tis a blasted bird!"
An owl drops a piece of parchment.
An owl flies north.
Thug B gets a piece of parchment.
Thug B hmms after a moment, his scowl turning into a grin, "Looks like we kill 'im."

Red Wizard of Thay (RWT) A walks in from the east.
RWT B walks in from the east.
A frog blows a bubble thoughtfully.
RWT B says, "Where is the mage?"
RWT A begins casting
RWT A says, "Magic Mirror"
RWT A grins briefly, "Still meditating, the hapless idiot, never see us coming."
RWT A gets a poisoned dagger from a silver sheath
RWT A holds a poisoned dagger in his right hand
RWT B begins casting.
RWT B says, "Invis"
RWT B fades out of existence.
<RWT A does likewise>
A frog blows another bubble, then submerges into the pond.
Someone whispers, "On the count of 3, hold him and go for the throat."
Someone says, "1"
Someone says, "2"
Elminster appears in a flash of light!
A frog appears in a flash of light!
