New Items

I was perusing the internet and I came across this
interesting item for DND games:

Cloak of Useful Things

These thick, shoddy cloaks have several
symbol patches on them. When a patch is torn
off, it turns into the item depicted on it. A typical
cloak has 2d common patches and 1d rare patches.
Patches cannot be replaced. If found on the market,
these Cloaks sell for $100,000.
Common patches depict a Knife (small),
Rope(50 feet), Pole (6 feet), Mirror (hand-sized),
Lantern (filled with oil), and a Sack.
Rare patches depict a Bag of Coins ($100),
Ladder (8 yards), Mule (with saddle bags), Charon
Potion, a Hercules potion, a War Dog, a Row-boat,
or a random Scroll. Some cloaks have 'mystery
patches', which randomly picks an item!

Now I know that some things( the animals, boat, and
money value) would not fit in with our code-base.

I decided to post this here because I suppose Rangers,
Druids and possibly wizards would use it the most.
If it is a good idea and people like it, I am sure that
other ideas would be welcome. Also I would like to know
what the coding team thinks of this.

I can imagine a hundred bucks wouldn't be quite as useful in FK as it would in real life. ;)

Otherwise, I think it's a nifty thing. A quest of considerable difficulty would be needed to obtain it though, in my opinion.
It seems like a pretty powerful item, compared to the ones there is today.

Agreed. Though I do think that figuring out how to turn a patch into $100 would be fun... Bwahahahaha! I've got it!

Anyways, enough of my evil plotting to take over the world. Perhaps a patch to recall?

In Ring of Winter, there is a cloak that does the same thing when induced in an enchantment, it summons a creature and generates a wepon...this might be a lovely quest reward.

Ah... the Cloak of Useful Items... a variation of the Robe from my dusty old 1st edition DMG. That was such a cool item, not really powerful, just useful and novel.

I think I will see if I can make one up to put in an area, that would be fun!

What's wrong with just carrying a pack?

Nono, Lathander. You can't put stuff IN the cloak.. the point is it's a magical cloak that has all these things at it's creation. Pulling a patch magically creates that item, and you can't put it back once you pull it off... basically, it's a novelty more than anything things are mostly mundane, but in a pinch... why not?

If there was a cost to the number and rarity of the patches?:
1 dagger 4 gold
2 dagger 9 gold
etc

And what if, when you get the item, a mob asks/tells you:

Jerry, the seamer asks you, "Are you here to buy magical patches?"
Jerry, the seamer says to you, "The sign on my LEFT tells you the price" Jerry, the seamer says to you, "per patch."

Look left

One common patch is 4 gold, plus one successivly.
Example,
1 common = 4 gold (first is 4 gold)
2 common = 9 gold (second is 5 gold)
3 common = 15 gold (third is 6 gold)

One rare patch is 3 platinum, plus one sucessively.
Example,
1 rare = 3 platinum (first is 3 platinum)
2 rare = 7 platinum (second is 4 platinum)
3 rare = 12 platinum (third is 5 platinum)

You say, " Yes I would like a patch."

Jerry, the seamer says to you, "You will need a special cloak"
Jerry, the seamer says to you, "To be able to use them."
Jerry, the seamer says to you, "Each cloak is worth 10000"
Jerry, the seamer says to you, "Platinum, but I will sell it to you"
Jerry, the seamer says to you, "for a measily ###.

They then purchase the cloak and the patches can be attached with a maximum of ###.

Perhaps the cloak can act LIKE a container but it contains patches?
The patches would not work unless they are attached by Jerry.

You could set the cloak to have various charges, one for each type of patch. Then when you purchase a patch(Most likely just use a bribe_prog and have no physical patches) a prog will add one charge to the cloak. For example if you buy a dagger patch then you would recharge the keyword daggerpatch to have +1 charges. Then when character Bob types 'daggerpatch' it will trigger a prog to create a dagger. If I didn't have class in a few minutes I'd try my hand at writing out the code. :D

Also, I don't think a player should be able to purchase more than one rare patch of the same kind.(For example they can purchase one row boat and one scroll but not two scrools.)

Or, it just simply runs out of patches, eventually, like the book version...

I made it, by the way... I just have to figure out an area of mine to put it in a test it ;)

Thanks for all of the enthousiasm for the idea.
Would you (Kregor) let me help test it? I have this bad habbit of finding all of the little loopholes and errors naturally.
I already have a login on the test port.
PM me or sometime when we are on together?

See ya,
