[ITEM] Foci

A foci is a item of high value since it replaces the component used to cast a single particular spell and it can be used as many times since it never disappears with its use.

Not all the spells have a foci, and they have a HUGE price, like 100x of the addition of the cost of all the components used in that spell.

Note that foci are orientated toward those spells of low level that you use often rather than the powerful ones.

Maybe they don't last forever, and cost a fortune, but last appreciably longer than the norm, and cost a goodly amount?

Another possible twist - foci as items that make it less likely that the normal component will be destroyed, one for each spell, or each school, or somesuch.

I thought foci was something to do with hyperbolas... hmmm Who knew that mathematics was used in spell casting.. ;)

Interesting idea ...

Making permanent foci would require some code change (a very minor one though).

Making special spell components that last longer though, is entirely feasible already.

I like the idea of foci, since it is a pain to keep going to components for frequently used components. But, maybe not have it entirely be permanent, just a lot of uses from it. One of the reasons I don't use some spells a lot is because of their cost and hassle of getting the components, it really makes the one be careful on how they use their spells.

If the foci were were endless, I worry that some shops would lose business and there would be a drop in people going out to search for components for trade or to sell.

I like the idea. I am just hesistant of what would be the consequences to shops and the gathering of components. How many PC run shops are out there that sell components?

Only the cheapest spells should have associated a foci, also focis can't be found in the wilderness, they are sold in component shops.

A particular foci is usable only with a particular spell, example: you know spell A and spell B, both use a feather as component but if you were to buy focis for both spells you wouldn't able to use it with both since each spell needs a particular specific foci.

Take in mind also that the price of a foci is huge in comparison with the base
component, a component who could be worth 2 silver (which give more than one use of it) might worth 20 platinum (maybe more, maybe less).

Just a suggestion, but perhaps instead of Foci only being sold in component shops. Perhaps it can be put in a trade that characters can make using ingredients? This will enhance rp and social interactions.

It could be added to the magical forge list of recipes.

I really like the idea of it being added to the magical forge recipes. For example a platinum feather could act as a focus for fly, maybe giving 50 casts per feather for example ?.

I demand a recipe for mithril manure. It must be done!!!!!!!!

Perhaps limit the spell level to which they would apply? They only work for spells of L4 and below, as an example.

Sounds like an uber-component.

Completely agree with a level restriction, even a spell restriction. Certain spells should never be easier to use often.

I really like those ideas of platinum feathers and yes... MITHRIL MANURE:)

The level restriction and spell restriction are a nice touch.

My priest has really been fed up with being a target for the griffons atop Castle Waterdeep when he goes to collect manure. One can easily see that he has much manure splats all over his clothing from griffon releases while flying.

Does anyone else get worried when the griffons are doing their aerial maneuvers overhead in Waterdeep?

I know I pray they were not fed beans...

Mouat, to solve your priest's issue with gathering manure from the griffons atop Mount Waterdeep, try waiting until after the griffons release their manure rather than getting it from them the, er, hard way. They will likely attack you less.

Mouat, it's much easier to stay inside during the griffons' patrol THEN go out and collect the manure from the ground once they have left. Trying to catch falling "treasures" is indeed a very risky business.

P.S. I like the platinum feather idea, and it's quite easy to add in.

Also, instead of mithril manure we could use coprolite, which is heavily fossilized dung.

but mithril manure has a much high awesomeness rating on the 'how it sounds' list..

Another foci idea that could be like a quest type item, could a rune-covered elven mirror, to replace all those small silver mirrors as fat as spells like Magic Mirror go. Tis a thought.
