Use magic device

Post by Rhianon » Sun Sep 07, 2003 10:30 pm

Do they have any intentions of letting the rest of the char's on FK have access to the skill Use magic device? Or is this strickly available to certain faiths only?

Rangers have the ability, and I think thieves and fighters do too. Wizards don't need it as they can already use any magic item. Pretty sure clerics don't need it either, as they can use scrolls and potions, with no penalty or diecheck

Well my priestess cannot use her levitate scrolls any longer, and the Use magic device is in her skill list, so I am assuming that is why she can no longer use the scrolls, she does not know that skill. If you can come up with another reason for her inability to use them please let me know.

It's probably for the reason you stated, ie the “Use magic device” skill. But you can also look at it as, maybe, you having a wizard made scroll and you now need cleric made ones... If you made it though, I'd go with your statement. Potions on the other hand can be quaffed, so I wouldn't think you need the skill, since you quaff instead of use/zap.

If you can't use a scroll and you have that skill on your list, then I'd say it's based on that skill and your levels in spellcraft.

First off the thread started with someone asking if Use Magic Device will be available on a trainer outside of a trainer known to the original poster. That is probably best answered with: when new areas come into the game there are possibilities of the newer skills/spells being in those areas so either wait for them or join the building team and make them.

Second this post had nothing to do with quaffing anything since you can not quaff a levitation scroll. And who made the scroll does not matter here with regards to who can recite them. The only restriction placed on scrolls is that priests/clerics are not allowed to WRITE the scroll so they can learn the skill when it is not trained. And priests can use magic staves.

Third, Rhianon, I tried to use a levitation scroll and another scroll on one of my priestesses and she could use them both without having the Use Magic Device skill trained at all. So perhaps you used the wrong syntax. Try holding the scroll and <recite yourcharname>.

No reason to make a new thread :)

I was thumbing through my characters last night, and found out my rangers have the "Use Magic Device" skill. From what I can gather, this would then enable my rangers to use wands, staves, and scrolls. I was curious as to why? Rangers are rangers, not arcane spell caster.

Well, everyone can use a wand of magic missiles. I think rangers can use druidic staves. And like thieves, at higher levels, rangers too can use scrolls. But I'm not sure whether its priestly or wizard scrolls. Of the staves and scrolls, this is what I can barely recall from old D&D computer games(pre-baldurs gate) and as such my memory of those can be intertwined with others. If correct high level for them would mean levl 45+ in th mud. And if not coded, should be used IC thusly.
