HOWTO's

Post by Mele » Wed Apr 09, 2008 12:06 am

Bear with me today, and maybe some of tomorrow. I am moving and editing around things to make them easier to navigate, and less cluttered.

Thanks!

Not sure if you are going to and just haven't done it yet, but might want to make the HOWTO HOWTO thread a sticky or announcement if you can. Seems like the best idea to have it be the first thing they see.

Getting there. :D

Check out "Howto Special roleplay" and you'll see precisely what I'm up to, and why this is taking me a long time. :)

Before I'm told ;

Firefox doesn't seem to be bringing you to the right place with some of my links. Just right around it.

Not sure how to fix that, I use IE myself.

Im curious about the reasoning to link the deity files to forgotten realms wiki instead of our deity pages. I don't think it is a bad idea, in fact I think it's great, just wondering why it was done.

Because forgotten realms wiki provides more information better laid out? :)

Because our deity pages are easily navigated to from the top bar, and the frwiki ones are not? :)

Mele, just wanted to give you a shout of appreciation. The new howtos are looking GREAT, really nicely organised, and you must have put a tonne of work into them. Thank you!

The only reason why I do not like the wiki files being the reference point for the gods is this...

We have been updating the In House deity help files to reflect things that cannon Forgotten Realms does not cover in our game. There are things that we do In House that that wiki for Forgotten realms are not going to cover. Which means, again we have a conflict between what the High Priest/ Faith Manager is doing In House and what the general populace wants to know about their God.

Don't get me wrong. The help files rock out, but in my own preference, in terms of the deity files, I'd rather have a refernece to the In House things, rather than out of house. Regardless if our Deity files are in the easiy navigated bar across the top of the page. We will continue to work on our own format and ease of look on the helpfiles. But that's just my two cents.

However, the new how to files look great! I am still coming up with some page errors but that could just be me on the internet exploder. :)

Is there some alternative world in which there's a such thing as having TOO much information to check out? :) There's a whole thread of off site links on different things, races, gods, what have you. Options to see information is never a bad thing... We have our helpfiles in game, our pages on the scroll bars, our threads with links

Faith managers shouldn't be doing different things in game than is cannon to their gods.. they can't just make up things and add them as they go for their gods... unless that's not what you mean.. Otherwise info is info is info about the gods, and I'm pretty sure it's all gravy to have multiple sources in multiple places as -we already do-.

Several deities and our realm as a whole do stray from canon on such things as allowed alignments, paladin orders, faith colours, and the like. I think Mele's concern that the discrepancies might cause confusion is valid. Perhaps all that's needed to fix it is a note saying that the links provided provide a rich background on each deity, but that the in-game help files should be consulted for the "final word" on how these deities are implemented in-game...and direct them up to the World Information pull-down menu. Fair compromise?

Not to mention deity specific events that haven't happened yet, or may never happen, in FK. But personally, I prefer using fr wiki...I just ignore all the history stuff once it starts to look unfamiliar. May wanna disclaimer there - something simple like "although the general ethos and nature of the gods are exactly the same, FK is a separate entity and many of the events spoken about in wiki may have never happened and could possibly never happen...and don't ask in character if it's happened yet unless you're a selunite soothsayer!"
Listen up! People pay good money to see this movie! When they go out to a theater they want cold sodas, hot popcorn, and no monsters in the projection booth! Do I have to come up there myself? Do you think the Gremsters can stand up to the Hulkster?

There's a section in HOWTO's already that says where we are time wise, what's happened.

That's awesome too. Just keep in mind that those new wiki's are going to be coming out with new events all the time because of the edition boom on the fr market. And since you can't prove negatives, some people may get the wrong idea about chronology because it's not specifically stated that it /didn't/ happen.

For example, you can say we're just after the time of troubles, before Bane comes back. Now FR does a new thingy and it's "the time of whole meat patties" (my personal favorite era). So then if looking at the events in whole meat patties, then you look to the howto and whole meat patty era isn't on there. You now have to go to a third chronology site that specifically lays out events. And those sites are painful - you have to be a level 6 pen and paper player to even begin to read it. And probably not updated for the new era of flame broiled goodness.

That's all I'm saying. Heck, far as I'm concerned, I'm thrilled at the idea of new players even going to learn about canon FR. It encourages the assimilation of FR and FK, and I'd geek out for that...even if you have to ignore a PC for saying something that hasn't happened yet. I'm pretty easy going about most everything, just trying to show a foreseeable problem. Like the saying goes, if you can foresee a problem, you've solved a disaster.
