It has recently been announced by Lord Piergieron that there are to be changes to the governance of Waterdeep. The Lords of the city will cease to deal with minor laws concerning the day-to-day running of Waterdeep, and instead grant a council of elected officials the power to change laws. Two of these council members will be drawn from the ranks of the City Watch, the other three candidates will be elected from the broader populace.

Interest in these positions has been voiced by a number of citizens. At the time of going to press, the list of candidates had not been finalised. Goldfarb's Good News shall endeavour to report on the election campaigns as they progress, and give a fair and equal account of each candidate.

I am happy to report on the wedding of Ryldaen and Violetta. The ceremony took place in the grand surroundings of the chapel of Berdusk, and was presided over by Paige Dranigar, Heartwarder of Sune. Dressed smartly in a black velvet suit, the groom was a wonderful host to those gathered, laying on a spread of fruit, cookies and cakes. The bride was resplendent in a silver gown, with violets entwined in her hair, and all fell silent as she entered the chapel. The couple recited vows they had composed themselves, with words written from their hearts, and exchanged rings. At the end of the ceremony, Violetta and Ryldaen announced that they would take Sariyan'ar to Upcoming weddings include: and then there was dancing through the night.

Ramirus Dranigar, Loremaster of the Binder, married Paige Kilmara, Heartwarder of Sune, outside Waterdeep. The wedding took place on the Sword Coast, south of Waterdeep, near the water. The groom, Ramirus, was clothed in
black with entwined gold and silver embroidery, sewn by Paige herself. The bride, Paige, was garbed in an exquisite silk and chiffon gown enlaid with golden silk, with matching gloves, slippers, and veil featuring golden glitter. The ceremony was performed by Kokoro of Sune, with several others in attendance.

~~~~~Taverns of the Realms~~~~

(In the first of an on-going series, Zelar of Tymora shares his insights on taverns of the realms. In this issue: "Yawning Portal Inn" in Waterdeep)

Located on Selduth Street in the Waterdhavian Castle Ward between the forks of Selduth Street with Swords Street and the Street of Silks, a few doors to the west from the famed Traveler Emporium run by Master Volo, stands the
Yawning Portal Inn.

Durnan, who has many stories to share if ye ask and listen to him, runs this fine inn which is said to stand atop the ruins of a long-vanished tower of Halaster. The inn has two different levels the common room which is richly adorned with tapestries depicting lore and legends about Undermountain and the upper level where fer two gold coins is possible to rent one of the many guests rooms heated in winter by warm stones. Close to the back of the common room stands a stone well which can be used to access the Undermountain, both a fee of one gold coin has to be paid to either enter or leave the Undermountain through it.

Opening the kitchen and tavern services at five o'the clock in the morning and closing them at ten o' the clock in the night, both the food and drink offered are as good of quality as the best than can be offered of the same type in any other tavern or inn of Waterdeep the prices are average, having ever-welcoming comfortable atmosphere, Durnan and his guards make sure nobody ever causes troubles here in what certainly is a must place to visit if you visit Waterdeep or ye are hungry or thirsty while in the Castle Ward.

As a bonus one could find that there are benefits to being a favored patron here and if ye ever visit this place pray give him best regards from Zelar the Gambler, Fortune's friend.

Threats against Waterdeep

I am afraid that the leading story in this issue of the Good News is a sombre
one. In the Month of the Melting, the City Watch held a meeting to discuss the
defence of the City of Splendours. Troubling reports of threats of attack made
against the city, and her people, were discussed by the Watch and other concerned
citizenry.

Furthermore, it seems the Friends of Ardeep have stood defiantly against the
shadowy creatures attempting to trespass over the borders of the forest, aided by
many brave adventurers from Waterdeep and the surrounding environs. According to
Sir Harroghty Rallyhorn, the Purple Knight of Cormyr, we owe our gratitude to, among
others, Sandric, Opia, Furik, Faria, Estrild, Kienva, Hoildric, Takket, Briek, Isaldur,
Charissa, Keltorn, Ynaura and Nilou, for their courage and cunning in holding back the threat.

As well as the trespass of Ardeep, the undead contained beneath the temple of
Lathander in Faerdale have risen up and broken through the seals and wards that
once contained them. The high priest of that temple was slain during their
uprising, and defiled the holy site of the Morninglord. The leader of both these
events seems to be a shadowy, demonic creature who has promised that we have not
seen the last of him.

Unfortunately, the threat of violence was not an empty one, with the apparent
alliance of known murderer Zarafae, with the churches of the Storm Lord, the
Stalker, and the Mad God, leading to the deaths of several citizens and the
torture both mental and physical of yet more. Zarafae has openly declared war on
the City of Splendors. Claiming it is a war on behalf of freedom, she has dubbed
it The War of Broken Shackles. The editor urges all to look to their local
message post for developments as they happen, yet please be wary of the rumour
and misinformation that is all about us in times of war.

Lady Jaenoic, of the Waterdeep City Watch, has the following request of citizens
of Waterdeep:
Remain viligant and careful, and continue to report any instances of half-drow
and fiend-bloods entering the city.

Election News

As the Waterdeep elections draw closer, the candidates have begun campaigning in
earnest. According to official reports, those standing for office are Gwain Rambash,
Isaldur Redleaf, Kallias, Lerytha Holt, Roderick, and Takket Keppur. Of these six, only
three shall become elected Lords. Keep your eyes open for the upcoming Waterdeep
Election Special Issue of Goldfarb's Good News!

Festivals and Tournaments

The most recent Bard Festival was held in the Month of the Storms. The setting
was the grand temple of Milil in Berdusk, and the programme of events was ably
organised by Ynaura Larkspur and Master of Ceremonies, Isaldur Redleaf. As well
as the performances, the audience played a guessing game during the interval, and
there were various riddles to tax the mind, with prizes for those gathered.

Festivities opened by Nara reciting a poem contrasting the deities Lathander and
Selune. Then Enig Quetia of Mystra told an entertaining story of an epic
adventure, with the unusual twist of allowing the audience to participate in
deciding the fate of the hero.

Following this was a play written by Keltorn Larkspur, and performed by Roderick
of Mystra, Iris the Cat, and Nara of Oghma. Titled "Mrap," it was a charming
rhyme about a young man attempting to talk with a cat. Next to perform was Faria
Cadence, Orchid Bard of Sune. We were treated to the beautiful composition "Over
the Mountain," which she performed most sensitively despite, as she later
revealed, feeling quite unwell throughout. Hrosskell of Kelemvor performed a
dramatic poem of his own composition, called "Old Flames." This was followed by a
duet from Estrild and Faria, called "Love as a Metaphor," dedicated to the Lady
Firehair. Then came the turn of your reporter, Peverell Goldfarb. My piece was a
short moralistic story called "The Three Precepts of the Wise Bird." Following
this was a most amusing rhyme from Pirro of the Dales, detailing the travails of
a father-to-be. After this, I am afraid, I had to leave the gathering, so much to
my disappointment I was not able to hear any other performances, nor see the
culmination of the riddle contests.

The Church of Tempus is sponsoring a fighting tournament, to be held in the
grounds of Swordpoint Hall in Berdusk, on the day of [[OOC:
http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/f ... c=0&p1=197]]. The last tournament held there was an exciting
event, featuring jousting and expert swordplay from fighters across Faerun. Those
wishing to compete should pay an entry fee of one platinum coin to Jarris Taril,
priest of Tempus. The winner of the last tournament is also invited to defend his
title, and challengers will compete not only for the glory of their victory, but
a prize from the church of the Lord of Battles. For further information please
seek out Jarris of Tempus.

Religious News

A spate of bad luck stalks the land, and tension is growing between the churches
of Tymora and Beshaba. A mysterious black cat has been seen, bringing misfortune
wheresoever he walks. I have yet to see or experience this myself, but the
creature has been nicknamed "Doom Kitty" in some quarters, and even inspired
ballads warning against crossing his path. Rumours of the cat's location abound,
and the editor urges any eyewitnesses to come forward and report their experience
to Goldfarb's Good News.

Weddings

Ellette and Peverell Goldfarb were joined in matrimony at the Chapel of Berdusk
in the presence of their friends.

Ellette, a bladeswoman, was resplendent in a gown of delicate ivory silk and
velvet and stunning over gown of ivy and red roses. She wore a crown of forget-
me-nots, her favourite blooms, and carried a bouquet of white roses. Loremaster
Peverell Goldfarb was elegantly turned out in white and gold silk.

Ynaura Larkspur, High Bard of Oghma, presided. The vows were written, with wit
and love, by the bard and the happy couple.

A reception was held at the Concert Hall in Berdusk. Entertainment was provided
by Faria of Sune, and Pirro. The couple honeymooned in the Loremaster's home town
of Longsaddle.

Business News and Job Opportunities

Miriel Tingilinde has announced the re-opening of her business venture, the
Weavebrewery. As she is great with child, she is not willing to produce some of
the more dangerous items in her repertoire (such as brewing potions) until after
she has given birth. She will, however, gladly take orders from those patient
enough to wait until such a time as she is ready.

Her products include:
POTIONS - 10 platinum per flask (delayed till childbirth)
SCROLLS - 10 platinum basic per scroll, additional or reduced cost is fully
negotiable

For negotiable prices, she also offers various spells, an escort service for
various lengths of time, and lessons in a variety of subject such as demonology,
greenskin lore, elf lore, various languages, potionbrewing, meditation, riding
and the best way to haggle with merchants. She is also open to applications for
apprenticeship. The terms and prices are negotiable, but is offered to young
wizards seeking a knowledgeable master to train them for the wider world of
magic.

Kienva's Catering Service is in need of a errand runner. Kienva looking for
someone willing to get supplies for her business. Mainly, bags of flour and
flasks of water.

Someone living within Waterdeep would be nice, however, the job is open to
anyone. Payment should be around five platinum per delivery plus the cost of the
supplies. If you have any questions or would like the job. Please contact Kienva

Ellette Goldfarb is seeking a teacher to instruct her in the art of lapidary.
Anyone with knowledge and experience in crafting items of jewellery from precious
metals and/or setting precious stones into metalwork would be suitable. Prices to
be negotiated between teacher and student, as well as regular times for lessons.

Lost and Found

If anyone should chance to find a white stallion, garbed in the tack colours of
Silverymoon (blue and silver) and carrying dark saddlebags, please contact
Loremaster Peverell Goldfarb. He shall see the mount safely returned to his
owner.

Taverns of the Realms

(In the second of an on-going series, Zelar of Tymora shares his insights on the
"Lady Luck Tavern" in Daggerford)

Between Kryptgarden Scrolls and Nartan's Fine Goods on The High Road in
Daggerford can be found the Lady Luck Tavern where a sign of a woman standing
under a horseshoe invites us to enter it.

Only a tavern with such name could have the background that it has, this
tavern which is run by Owenden Orcslayer was once a warehouse that was given
as reward to his father as reward after killing the orcs that killed the
previous owners in a raid. The walls of this tavern are decorated with
weapons and trophies of those regular patrons that did fall, and specially
worth of mention is the bar of rich polished oak standing along the eastern
wall, where always stands untouched a silver goblet, full of spirits, stands
untouched in the center of the it.

Such silver goblet is fer Tymora herself should she enter, woe befalls upon
those who dare to touch the goblet because it has been reported that those
that did touch it and did not make a more than generous donation at
Fairfortune hall have in his fate written to find a yard of steel through
their middles. It has been reported twice as well that the silver goblet did
wreath in flame disappearing the wine within it. Patrons believe that Tymora
herself did drink from the goblet.

Despite the memorial pillar in which can be read the names of those
adventurers that did fall the atmosphere is always cheerful, the shouts of
"Dare everything!" and "Let us be adventuring then!" are heard quite often,
also because most of the regular patrons are adventurers this is the ideal
place for those adventurers who wish to hear news about treasure findings or
dragon sightings, and for those bards who wish to hear inspirational stories.

The kitchen is well known in Daggerford for his speciality in fried rabbits,
finely seasoned and always just right. And it would be such a daring not
making mention either to The Lady's Ale, an ever-popular drink among the
patrons here or a must-drink if yon pocket allows it, stagheart boug mead,
made up in the far north of the kingdoms.

If thee visit this place pray do no forget to give Owenden best regards from
Zelar, Fated of Tymora nor making a toast before the memorial pillar in honor
of those brave fallen adventurers.

Recipe Corner

This issue, a recipe for a warming apple pie, courtesy of the baker Kienva.

What you will need:
- Several washed apples
- A knife
- A wooden rolling pin
- A cooking bowl
- One bag of flour
- A flask of water

Step One:
First MIX the flour and water together in your cooking bowl until well mixed.
Step Two:
Take the dough out of the bowl and FLATTEN it evenly and then mold it into a pie crust shape.
Step Three:
Prepare your apples. First remove the skin from the apples, then SLICE the into small pieces, there really is no proper size just use what you feel to be right.
Step Four:
PLACE the sliced apples into the pie crust. Be sure to place them evenly so there is plenty of yummy fruit in every bite.
Step Five:
BAKE. Be sure to see an eye on your tart during baking to prevent under cooking or over cooking.
Step Six:
Lastly, enjoy.

Introduction

Citizens of Waterdeep, the election is nearly upon us! For your information
and enlightenment, I am proud to present a special edition of Goldfarb's Good
News. Herein you shall find coverage of the campaigns, information on each
candidate, and instructions for voting. Also, a special note about the role
of the non-elected Watch Members, kindly written by Lady Raona Corbin.

The Voting Procedure

It is only a few months until the elections take place. This shall be a new
experience for all concerned, so Lady Honoria has been kind enough to explain
the voting procedure to me.

When the election has been announced, all eligible to vote are to report to
Lady Honoria, in the courtroom of Piergeiron's Palace on Waterdeep Way. Lady
Honoria shall then distribute voting cards to those who request them.

Out of the candidates listed, you are to select THREE names, and no more than
three. Voting cards shall be written in common: if you require assistance to
read or write on them please ask someone you can trust not to sabotage your
vote. Any Oghman in the vicinity would be happy to help, even if it is to
just lend you a quill.

Once you have filled in your voting card, please return it to Lady Honoria as
soon as possible [[OOC: The current plan is to have the voting period last 24
RL hours, but this isn't set in stone]]. She and her team of trusted
employees will tally the votes given. Once they are sure of the results, they
will announce the names of the three candidates who received the most votes.
These three shall then take their place on the council.

A Word from the Watch

Questions have indirectly reached my ears as to why there are to be two
representatives of the City Watch seated on the five-member Council of Lords: it
seeming to them a disproportionate fraction of the voting power on the Council,
placed there without regard to the wishes of the populace (that is, unelected).
The Lords were kind enough to consult with me as they set plans for the Council
in place, so I should like to share with ye the rationale behind the inclusion
of these two unelected members. Let me first state that it was not a request of
the Watch, but rather a proposal of the Lords to do so. Understanding that nigh
all of the institutional memory concerning law enforcement, and to a lesser
extent the protection of the Deep, lay within the Watch, they wished to place
that knowledge at the table where the decisions were to be made. That alone
would argue for non-voting members, however. More importantly, it will fall to
the Watch to enforce and carry out the laws and policies set forth by the
Council. It is both easy and tempting to pass vague, poorly thought out, or
unenforceable laws, which then serve only to undermine respect for the laws, law
enforcement, and the City as a whole. We in the Watch are currently in the best
position to foresee and advise against such problems, the elected Counsellors
unlikely to have much experience with the challenges of law enforcement.

Let me assure ye all that the makeup of the Council was given careful
consideration. The three elected members, as a group, will retain a majority,
and thus the power to enact any law or policy they see fit. If the Watch
representatives are united against something (hardly a foregone conclusion) but
can not persuade at least one of the three elected Lord Counsellors to
reconsider their position, it will still carry the day. We are to be a powerful
advisory arm and an ever-present source of practical experience, in effect. As
the Lord Counsellors gain experience with these matters, the need for such from
the Watch will diminish, and the structure of the Council of Lords may be
changed. For now, however, I hope I have managed to at least clarify the
motivations underpinning the initial structure.

The Candidates

Isaldur Redleaf

Isaldur Redleaf is former High Bard of the kingdoms. Born near Neverwinter he
now resides in Waterdeep, and has done for many years. He has published many
fine works and can still be found performing at bard festivals, organising
concerts, and supporting up-and-coming artists.

Mister Redleaf declined to comment, and asks all questions be directed to
Estrild of Sune, his campaign manager.

Kallias Aentius

Born in Chassenta, Kallias came to Waterdeep in his 16th year. Raised to
believe in ideals of gallantry, heroism and virtue, he was quickly drawn to a
knight's life. His father, a merchant, arranged transport to Waterdeep for
his teenaged son. Following his childhood dreams, Kallias pursued an
adventuring life and the path of knighthood.

Kallias is a follower of Torm, and committed to a life of righteousness,
honesty, loyalty and truth. He has stated that his time in office would be
characterised by the purity of his intentions, and the diligence with which
his duties would be carried out.

When asked if he had a message to his opponents, Kallias responded:
"It is infinitely better to have a few good men than many indifferent ones.
I truly believe Waterdeep is unable to falter in this election."

Lerytha Holt

Born in Amn, Lerytha Holt has lived in Waterdeep since she was 5 years old
and calls this city her home. Her family were traders who originally sent her
to study magic, but the young Lerytha was soon drawn to the world of law and
education. An unfortunate accident in Westgate brough ther adventuring
career to a close, as a horse's kick to the head caused her to lie
unconscious for six years in a temple of Ilmater.

Lerytha's desire for stimulating debate is obvious to any of have seen her on
the campain trail. She has gone out of her way to talk to different groups,
to discover how they view the election and to find out what their needs are.
As joint leader of the Oghman faith (with Ynaura Larkspur), Lerytha is
devoted to the spreading of knowledge and has been very vocal about her
policies. She is dedicated to a path of neutrality, balance and fairness. She
is willing to listen to the words of any citizen, even if she does not agree
with their views.

Finally, some words for her opponents:
"I truly think Waterdeep will be well-served whichever of us is elected,
because all of the other candidates are worthy of the greatest respect and
admiration. Of course, I cannot deny that I feel my policies offer the best
chance to move Waterdeep forward. If I felt we were all the same, I could not
really stand, could I?"

Roderick

Roderick was unable to be contacted at the time of going to press, so this
information has come from several public sources.

Roderick is a follower of the goddess Mystra, though he is not a magic user
himself. He has vowed that, if elected, he will maintain a highly visible
public profile. He encourages citizens to make their opinions known to the
council, and pledges to regularly visit businesses and temples in the city to
hear a variety of views, as well as making himself approachable in public
places such as the Market Square.

Some words from Roderick to the people of Waterdeep:
"Please, good citizens and friends of the Deep....do your part in this
election. Become informed voters, get to know the candidates personally. If
you do this, then you will have helped make sure Waterdeep continues as one
of the strongest cities in all the land for generations to come."

Takket Keppur

A graduate of Miresk's School of Thaumaturgy, a school devoted to the
study of transmutation, Takket himself is devoted to education and spends
much time in the schooling of young wizards. He believes that educating the
populace will enable Waterdeep to reach its full potential, and intends to
make education and training available to all citizens if elected.

He has spoken about his ideas for the election system: Suggesting a term of 6
months as being ideal to gauge the worth of an elected official. He has also
stated that he is of the belief that the people should retain the right to
impeach any elected official should that official prove to be unsatisfactory.
He finds this to be a very important point and hopes that all other
candidates will support it.
He has also stated his desire to form an alliance with the rangers of Ardeep,
and his commitment to improving the lot of honest merchants, with incentives
for both local and foreign trade.

With this edition of the Good News, we launch a regular feature
containing news from the City Watch, aimed at helping to keep ye citizens
informed of the efforts of law enforcement on your behalf, and how ye might
best respond to current situations.

Today I should like to inform citizens and visitors alike of a troubling
trend at the Lucky Drunk, the popular inn and tavern just north of the
Market Square. It seems that some brazen individual has, of late, taken to
prowling about the rooms of the Drunk, playing the burglar. What's more,
they have proven themselves willing to fight, if discovered. Clients of the
Drunk are warned against leaving their personal belongings unattended, even
if locked in a room, and are asked to keep an eye open. If ye should spot
anything unusual or see someone acting suspiciously, ye be asked to inform a
member of the Watch forthwith.

By working together, we can keep our Waterdeep a safe and pleasant place to
live and visit.

Taverns of the Realms

(In the third of an on-going series, Zelar the Gambler shares his views
on the Friendly Arm Inn)

Along the Coast Way, several days north of Beregost stands what seems from
afar a fortified tower surrounded by high walls, being the only inn in many
miles around it, its name, the Friendly Arm Inn.

What was once the hold of an evil Bhaalist nowadays is an island of safety in
the sea of bandits that is the Coast Way, was Bentley Mirrorshade he who with
the aid of a group of adventurers did manage to eliminate the threat that was
such cultist of the Lord of Murder, alas still danger lurks around this safe
spot. Goblins and Hobgoblins besiege constantly this place but thanks to the
aid of adventurers and mercenaries they are far from a real threat, the
reward of a single golden coin for each token proof of the defeat of one of
those creatures given to the guards at the entrance is enough to guarantee a
good number of them at any time in order to provide the so much needed
protection.

Besides the inn this enclave also hosts The Temple of Wisdom, a temple in
honor to Garl Glittergold, the Joker and watchful protector, Gellena
Mirrorshade, the priestess of Garl presides over this temple in which the
walls are finely studded with gems and gold nuggets. Also worth of notice are
the stables where the animals will be taken care of and get the best
treatment by only three silver coins, worth of mention is also the great
number of mounts and companion that can be acquired there, draft horses,
ponies, eagles and even monkeys. Ryldaen a servant of the windwalker vouches
fer the service being offered here.

Peace within the walls here is maintained by a common agreement among the
guests in which tis one of the rare neutral havens of the realms, also by the
magic and aid that Bentley might call on, that is without forgetting the
persistent rumor in which the barmaids are in fact iron golems concealed by
the power of illusion, the food here is simple yet abundant and very good,
being the house speciality bowls of pheasant and red wine stew and the
chocolate cakes, all at very reasonable prices. The rooms are large and airy,
all is in very well state. All of this has done of the Friendly Arm inn a
favorite spot fer business gatherings and negotiations in neutral ground.

Should thee ever be on the Road from Baldur's Gate to the south, tis certainly
a place not to miss, and pray give Bentley best regards from Zelar of
Tymora should thee meet him.

Bakery Corner

Welcome to Bakery Corner with your guide to the world of baking, Enig!

We'll be talking about bread today so make sure you have plenty of flour on
hand to do some serious baking. First of all we'll seperate bread into two
distinct categories; lean and rich doughs. Lean doughs have either small
amounts of animal fat or none at all and tend to be chewier, with a crustier
outside, whereas rich doughs usually have a fair amount of fat and a softer
texture. For the purposes of this edition's bakery corner, however, we'll
only be looking at lean doughs! So let's get started.

A basic lean dough can be made with nothing more than flour and water but
that's not very practical. Your bread will come out with the right texture,
but it'll taste just awful and will probably be pale. You'll want to at
least add some salt to flavour the bread, and if you can add honey that'll
make it even tastier will contribute to a nicer colour, too.

The mixing of bread is a fairly straight-forward process, too. Take a
standard bag of flour and mix in any sugar and salt you might want water,
mixing it all together into a solid dough. After that you have to knead the
dough for about ten to fifteen minutes. The best way to know when your dough
is kneaded enough is to do the 'window' test; just take a piece of dough and
stretch it between your fingers, and if you can get it thin enough for light
to shine through without tearing it to pieces, it's ready. Be sure not to
overmix, or the dough won't hold Chauntea's Blessing.

At this point there are two distinct types of bread you can end up with. If
you flatten the dough out now and bake it over a stone in will be chewy but
if you brush it with oil right out of the oven it'll soak in and make it
softer. Alternatively you could leave your dough out on the counter for up
to a week or so and if you're lucky it may take on the Blessing of Chauntea.
You'll know when that happens because the dough will puff up and become light
and airy like a cloud, and will also develop a deliciously sour flavour.

Once your dough has taken on the blessing of Chauntea, shape it like a ball
or a pillar and then let it sit for another few hours. Bake it over a stone
and then if you like, brush it with oil to give it a softer crust and
texture.

culinary adventuers, Waterdhavians, and remember, don't burn down the
kitchen!

- 1 Jar of Honey
- 1 Handful of Roasted Cocoa Beans
- 1 Bag of Flour
- 1 Flask of Water
- 1 Portable Press
- 1 Cooking Bowl

Step One: CRUSH the roasted cocoa beans into a fine powder.
Step Two: MIX the flour and water in evenly until a dough is made.
Step Three: MIX Honey into the dough evenly.
Step Four: MIX the cocoa powder into the honey-flavoured dough evenly.
Step Five: BAKE the dough until cooked both inside and out.
Keep a close eye on your cake to prevent burning.

The adoubement of Sir Kallias Aentius of Torm took place in the Citadel of Torm in the city of Tantras. The ceremony was solemn and ritual, with Vanguardier Athon, Tormtar Melia, Sir Harroghty, and myself(Lady Jaenoic) in participation. The ceremony began with a prayer from the Vanguardier, followed by Tormtar Melia reading the Tormish reading the Penance of Duty. Sir Kallias was dubbed ceremoniously with spurs, a girdle, and a sword of
duty. Each represents knighthood, being bound in duty to the church, and being armed against the rot and evil of men, respectively. Sir Kallias then gave his vows, and a slap across the face followed from the Vanguardier I was later told this was to cement those vows in the knight's mind. A merry feast followed, with friends of sir Kallias and the church both in attendance. The mashed potatoes were especially tasty.

Recently there was a joust in honour of the lady of strategy held in the fields of Hillsvale, part of the Royal Kingdom of Cormyr. The Face of Faith

The Good News now presents the first of a new series of articles penned by Estrild, the Songbird of Sune. In her own words, she addresses her goals and intentions for "The Face of Faith." This publication is meant to capture and forever place in memory the faces of those most devout and dear in the eyes of the gods. For the servants of the Binder, I give you a page of history, that we may never forget services rendered. For hopefuls and followers, I give you a prayer and an appropriate prescribed ritual, that you might be better prepared to serve. And lastly for all of us, may the faith seen here be a measuring stick of our own, of everything we can and are able to do.

This Issue - Helm, the Ever Vigilant One
There is nothing of higher praise or of better description that I can give of the Senior Steeleye Sade of the family Sevowa than that she truly serves the Watcher. Though her position is in the city of Berdusk within the Ready House of the Right Strong Hand, citizens of Waterdeep may recognize her during her visits to their city by her undecorated platemail armor, her piercing gaze, and the finality of each one of her carefully chosen words. She is well-known for her calm demeanor backed by straightforward and often humbling speech. "Doubt," she told me plainly, as
I gathered the courage to speak with her, "rules the mind of the weak. Speak what you will lest your insecurities grow tiresome." With this encouragement I bring you, my gracious readers, the account of the Steeleye of Helm, and her advice to us all.

On Ritual
The Holy Vigil Ceremony
The Holy Vigil is a ceremony that marks the ascension of a priest to a higher rank within the heirarchy of the Church of Helm. It begins in the evening, when a weapon is enspelled to levitate by a higher clergy member through ritual magic. The younger priest must observe the weapon throughout the night. His vigil, not the original spell, over the weapon maintains its levitation, and it may not touch the floor of the temple at any time or for any reason. If by morning his vigilance has led him to complete this task, he shall advance within the ranks of the Church. If he fails, it is seen as a failure of willpower, and he cannot attept ascencion again until a ritual of purification is completed to atone for his weakness.

May this be a true and just depiction of the Holy Great Guard and His servants, for know that there is naught that escapes His Watch.

Danger in Ardeep

FOOLHARDY adventurers are being warned to stay away from deep Ardeep - after three deaths in just one week (writes our correspondant Isabel Kaiser). Jarris Taril, Battleguard of Tempus, who was called upon after the latest
casualty, a male human, told the Good News of the dangers. He said: "Imagine corrupted treants, six of them walking around. And when you kill six of them, six more come to replace them Ketlic and I killed a total of eighteen in there. Not to mention the rest of the corrupted bushes, and the dire bears, and boars." Terrifyingly, it now appears that the bodies of the fallen are vanishing, making raising any unfortunate adventurers a difficult task indeed. The Battleguard, who always goes accompanied by a ranger, added: "Foolish travellers want to test themselves and fall. The ranger Ketlic and I were in there for several hours looking for the fallen man. His corpse was nowhere to be found. It appears the corruption has started to make corpses go missing."

My Fellow Citizens of Waterdeep,

This edition I wish to share two current events that relate to the Law
regarding Public Disturbance - "None shall act so as to endanger the
public or disturb the normal course of business." Quoting from
Lawmaker Commentary, "The City does not seek to curtail free
speech, nor to police what people say within its walls. Insulting,
threatening, or slandering others is not against the law in the City...
[However that which] threaten the cause of commerce in the city...
and the general feelings of safety of the citizenry and visitors to the
City...put ye at great risk of being brought up for treason."

Recently the Watch was asked to comment on the presence of a
wemic in the City. Please know that wemic are commonly a goodly
race, often allied with the Forest Folk who guard our borderlands.
Wemic are NOT banned from the City, but for fear of causing a panic,
previously came seldom within our Walls and then only in diplomatic
mission escorted by known Goodly Figures. It has also been brought to
my attention by a devotee of Meilikki that a wemic touched by the taint
of evil was recently sighted near Ardeep (though not in the City!)

To date, the policy on wemic has not been changed, but we will be
posting the following warning within Ardeep: "Any wemic or other
alarming folk who should seek to visit Waterdeep should be warned
that their safety from an alarmed populace can not be vouched for
by the Watch or Guard, nor will their visit be allowed to create civic
unrest. Any wemic of goodly intent with an urgent need to enter the
City should seek escort by a Watch Officer or other Goodly Party
who is well-known to the City. As always, wemic are welcome to
approach the City Gates without molestation to collect their bounty
on road bandits. The City is most grateful for the assistance wemic
provide in protecting the trade routes!"

In other matters, a number of sightings of folk bearing the symbols
of dark powers, or otherwise bearing the taint of evil have been made
in the Market Square. Oft times these figures are engaged in
spreading rumours and erroneous tales of dire calamity. The Watch
wishes to remind these folk that though their presence be protected
by Law, creating unrest will fall and be prosecuted under the Public
Disturbance Law. Goodly citizens are also reminded that those of evil
intent seek mostly to alarm and disrupt trade, and are requested to
remember the teachings of Good and not give into the temptation of
anger. Foul talk is worth not even the breath of air it rides upon, and
should not be allowed to disturb the Peace and Prosperity of the City
of Splendors.

The Good News has been informed of a change in legal procedure by Sergeant
Gwain Rambash of Waterdeep City Watch. The policy known as "Hot Pursuit" -
whereby a criminal fleeing Waterdeep's streets can be pursued as far south
as Daggerford or as far north as the Sword Mountains - has been

from the Lords of Waterdeep, which states "Watchmen are only empowered to

The days are getting longer and warmer - Spring is approaching
and bringing with it the natural process of rebirth. So now is the time
for Chauntea to show off Her gifts to Her children and treat us to
beautiful sights that may seem a distant memory - blooming fruit
trees and the fragrance and colour of beautiful flowers. Now is the
time to make sure that we have done our part in making this beauty
last as long as the warmth of the sun lingers.

The rebirth of nature shows us that our own lives are capable of this
same rebirth. This is the time of year to get out into the garden and
participate in that life force.

One of the most important things to remember when getting the
garden in shape for a successful growing season is the addition
of organic matter to the soil. A nice, thick layer of mulch or
compost will insulate the soil from the elements as well as
encouraging the gardener's friend - earthworms.

When you are choosing the flowers you want in your garden,
remember to pay attention to the climate and how much sunshine
different parts of your garden gets - you can avoid the heartache
of a garden that does not grow by paying attention to what your
plants like and keeping them happy. Sunflowers, for example, need
full sun most of the day, and will not grow in areas that are shady.
If you are taking a cutting of a plant, pay attention to its surroundings
and see if you can recreate them on your own piece of land.

As spring unfolds and the Earth is reborn, I ask you this question.
Aren't we all reborn this time of the year when we are surrounded
by reminders of how we are changed winter's chill is washed away?

I wish for you the knowledge that as we tread a little more lightly on
this Earth, the Great Mother will reward us more than we can imagine.

In Celebration of the new Faith Year, the Temple of Lathander in
Waterdeep will be sponsoring a series of events and seminars of
interest to the followers of the Morninglord and all other folk of
Peaceful and Inquisitive heart!

The festivities were recently launched by a reception held in the
Spires of Morning on the first day of the Melting. An enjoyable
time was had by all who partook of a truly dizzying array of wine
and exotic canapes, as well as an opportunity to ask informal
questions about the Lords' Council, the Watch, and the role of
the Church of the Morninglord in Waterdeep.

Planned events for the near future include a scavenger hunt,
a pie bake-off, and a theological discussion of the autonomous
nature of Gods as influencing the Realms (inspired by a
fascinating new volume published by the Morninglord's own
Fulgous Llum!)

The Good News is pleased to report on the Knighting of Alfrid Orvinson of
Ilmater. The adoubement took place in the outer sanctum of the Halls of
Justice in Waterdeep.
The candidate fasted in vigil before the ceremony. Healer Fendrel opened
with a prayer, and Novice Eveshka of Ilmater laid a blessing on the
candidate. Alfrid announced himself, and Sir Harroghty vouched for his
quality. Also participating were Ladies Raona and Jaenoic, and Alfrid was
charged with the edicts of being a Knight of Ilmater. He was then granted
the tokens of knighthood - a girdle, a sword, and spurs. The candidate was
then knighted with a tap to each shoulder and the pate of the head. Finally,
the knight was given a slap to the face to remind him that knighthood brings
both honor and pain. Healer Fendrel concluded the ceremony with a prayer,
and pancakes were served as Sir Alfrid broke his fast with the attendees.

Emprise of the Boar

Good men and ladies of the kingdoms, once again I write about the recent
tourney event the Emprise of the Boar. It took place at the bridge of fallen
men, one of the crossing patrol points into Cormyr. The Princess Alusair
herself and the school of heralds sponsored this event; also a thank you
goes out once again to Sir Harroghty Rallyhorn and Sade Sevowa, Senior
Steeleye of Helm for organising and judging this event.

First Round

First Match -Lady Raona Corbin of Tyr vs. Squire Alfrid of Ilmater

In the third jousting pass, Lady Raona's horse Amity veered into
the stands, and she did not pull up he lance quickly enough to avoid
harm to Sir Aramil. She apologized profusely, and disqualified
herself until she could regain confidence in her steed. Alfrid was
re-slotted to face the odd jouster, Sir Harroghty.

Note: At the end of the tournament, Steeleye Sade discovered a
metal shard in Amity's hoof, the likely explanation for his departure
from the proper path during the joust. With it removed, the steed
was palpably relieved.

Second Match -Squire Briek Blackthorn Vs Porter Pomeroy

Final score: Rider Porter Pomeroy seventy-nine points. Rider
Briek Blackthorn ninety-two points. Rider Blackthorn advanced to round two.

Third Match - Sir Kallias Aentius vs. Vastenik

Rider Kallias Aentius scored ninety-two points. Rider Vastenik
scored seventy-nine points. Rider Aentius advanced to round two.

Fourth Match - Sir Harroghty Rallyhorn vs. Sir Alfrid of Ilmater

Sir Rallyhorn scored a total of sixty points. Sir Alfrid of the
Ilmateri scored a total of sixty-two points. Sir Alfrid of the Ilmateri
advanced to round two.

Fifth Match - Sir Victor Aure de'Laramie vs. Vastenik
Vastenik being tied with Porter Pomeroy as the first round loser
with the highest score; Vastenik was selected to face the odd jouster
as the result of a contest of unmounted arms, won by him fifty-five to
forty-one.

Sir Victor proved so agile in the saddle that some ladies in the crowd
took to calling him the "Lightning Paladin." He dodged Vastenik's
attacks on several passes, and Vastenik forfeited the contest before
the last pass. Sir Victor advanced to round two.

Match Six - Squire Briek Blackthorn of Tyr vs. Sir Kallias Aentius

Rider Kallias Aentius scored ninety-one points total. Rider Briek
Blackthorn has scored fifty points total. Rider Kallias advanced to the finals.

Match Seven - Sir Alfrid of Ilmater vs. Sir Victor Aure de'Laramie

Sir Victor scored eighty-nine points to Alfrid's fourteen, with Sir
Victor again playing the Lightning Paladin and dodging most of the
attacks and advancing to the finals.

Rider Kallias Aentius scored seventy points. Sir Victor scored fifty-eight.
Sir Kallias was declared the victor of the joust, with Sir Victor the

The Watch Blotter

In recent years the Watch has grown in size, while still experiencing its
usual (and appreciable) turnover - such that many citizens are unaware of
just who is presently serving in the Watch. It is my intent here to help
bring you all up to date!

Let me start at the top: Commander Marcus remains the Grand Civilar of the
Waterdeep City Watch. An imposing figure, he has not been seen for many
moons. Most suspect that he is engaged in something of great import for the
City, but even whispers as to what it might be are few and far between, and
I've no intention of speculating here.

In his absence, I, Civilar Raona Corbin, am serving as acting commander of
our Watch forces. I also serve on the Council of Lords, as one of the two
Watch representatives to that body. My primary responsibility therewith
entails, not surprisingly, matters of law enforcement and the maintaining of
citizen safety and civil society.

Sergeant Gwain Rambash, formerly the Armar and leader of the Watch,
retired his commission some time ago. At my behest, he has rejoined us, to
aid in our recruitment drive, and in particular to help train the new
recruits being brought on board. He is the highest ranking officer in the
Watch, save myself and Commander Marcus.

The Watch hast two Corporals, Lady Saranya and Justin. The latter has not
been seen for some time, but Lady Saranya is the other Watch representative
to the Council of Lords, where she focuses upon the entities at the
interface between the City's law enforcement efforts and matters beyond our
purview - such as the City Guard (overseen by Lady Honoria, and
responsible for the handling of crimes against non-adventurers), the various
churches in the City (who see to their own internal law enforcement affairs,
but interact with us), and so on.

There are two wizards in the Watch, Mitchell and Elenthis, though the
former has not been seen for some time and the latter is not presently in
service, for reasons I will not discuss here.

Currently active rank-and-file Watchmen include Sean, Maybel, Larsdingen,
Florian, Briek, and Victor. Though they range in experience, they have all
been through the Academy and extensive on-the-job training, and are ready to
serve and protect.

Recently retired from the Watch are Tandria, Dapher, and Lady Jaenoic
They each served the City most capably, but have now re-focused their
energies elsewhere.

Active duty Watchmen are easy to spot - we patrol in uniform, scouring the
streets for trouble or potential trouble. While not on active duty, each
Watchman can still be recognized by the Watch ring they wear upon one of
their fingers. Feel free to approach any of us with issues or questions,
though please understand that while not on active duty, we are at liberty to
redirect your inquiry to another time or another individual.

The Watch is still seeking to expand its numbers - if you are interested,
please contact me by whatever means is convenient. I also welcome feedback
on any of our Watchmen or our efforts more generally, be the sentiment good,
bad, or otherwise.

I look forward to seeing ye upon the streets of our fair City, and pledge
that the Watch shall continue its efforts to keep them safe.

The Good News passes its congratulations to Zasheir, new Luckbringer of the
Church of Tymora. The Church of the Binder is pleased to welcome the
storyteller Verrau as an Initiate of the faith. In less pleasant news the
Temple of Wonder in Waterdeep was recently attacked by a follower of the God
of Lies. Thankfully no life was lost nor property irreparably damaged in
the raid. The editor sends his best wishes to Waterdhavian Mystrans.

Also Pirro of Yondalla passes on the following message:
Hin adventurers and all others of peaceful intent are invited to a Safe Day
gathering on the first of Drawing Down, at Hullybuck's in Berdusk. This is
first and foremost a day of rest and light heartedness, but it is also a day
on which we remember traditions and lore. With that in mind, I ask guests to
bring tales about the history of the kingdoms. They can be about events from
the distant past or more recent happenings that you saw for yourself. They
need not be long (five minutes in the telling is ample), and young
adventurers who have not seen much of the world should not worry if they
cannot find one.

Festivals and Tournaments

The most recent Bard Festival was held in the Month of the Claw of Winter
Organised by Ynaura Larkspur, High Bardess of Oghma, and presented by Master
of Ceremonies Isaldur Redleaf, the performances took place in the
performance hall of Berdusk. As well as tokens of thanks awarded to the
performers, a riddle contest organised by Loremaster Peverell Goldfarb and
guessing games run by Ynaura yielded prizes for audience members.

Festivities opened with a performance by Ruilwyn and Hollenlark, who are
known by the unusual moniker "Fire and Monkies." Ruilwyn began with a jaunty
tune on his banjo about a creature known as "a grue." Hollenlark followed
with an untitled song chronicling various failed attempts to seduce young
women - which he hastened to inform us was not written from personal
experience. They finished their slot with a duet - a song about the
forbidden love between an elf and a dwarf.

Following this, Charissa Sperenza, an apprentice of Isaldur Redleaf, took
the stage. She performed a powerful ballad called "Just to See You Smile."
The wemic storyteller Verrau told us the legend of Fowha and the Bears.
Vezre Songlight was a late addition to the programme, but treated us to a
beautiful composition called "The Dawn," and a touching lullaby from her
childhood. The last act before the interval was Quin Widdershins. The self-
described fool entertained the crowds with a startling display of tumbling
and juggling with fire, and a song about living the life of a jester.

During the interval, audience members sated themselves with food and drink
and Ynaura ran several guessing games, which prizes for the winners. After
several rounds, it was time for your editor, Peverell Goldfarb, to take the
stage. He performed a short, humorous story called "The Farmer of
Longsaddle." This was followed by Kelvan Umberdawn of Oghma, who treated the
audience to a thought-provoking story of love between a mermaid and a human
male. The father-and-son duo of Enig and Garin Quetia presented a story
about the origin of the variety of coloured dragons that roam the realms
today. I would encourage all readers of the Good News to watch young Garin's
future career with interest! Isaldur rounded off the performances himself
with two songs of his own composition. The first was an encouragement to
young bards, the second a thoughtful song of lost love.

In somber news that I nonetheless hope brings additional safety to our fair
City, today I announce the following:
Nyskall Lare is wanted by the law enforcement authorities of Waterdeep for
heinous crimes, including multiple murders. When confronted about his
actions, he is reported to have bragged of his guilt. As a consequence of
this wanton attitude, the Lords of Waterdeep see him as a concrete threat to
the safety of the City and its people and have banished Nyskall Lare from the
City of Waterdeep, on pain of death and the confiscation of all his material
possessions.

Be it knowne to all Faerun that effective this writing, the magus Namic
Du'Liir, formerly a citizen of Waterdeep, has been disowned by his childhood
home, and banished therefrom. The revocation of anyone's citizenship is not an
action the City takes lightly. Namic was born and raised in the Deep, and
whatever the leaders of the City may think of his chosen path in life, such
does not provide the basis for our actions. Rather, this be in light of a
persistent pattern of recklessly endangering our citizens and the City itself,
most prominently by using the laws of the City and his status as a citizen to
shield him from the repercussions of his actions without. Waterdeep has no
intention of serving as a safe haven for those guilty of cold-blooded murder,
defilement of sacred places, and other grave violations of the laws and customs
of civilized and peaceful societies without our walls, whether they have a
reciprocity agreement with the Deep or not. Those taking refuge in the City
with such intent, on a repeated basis, will be disowned by Her and
exiled therefrom.

Namic is warned not to enter the Deep ever again, on pain of death and the
confiscation of all his material possessions.

Elke Ashbow reports on the the first lesson of Waterdeep Sponsored Education,
held on the 24th day of the Month of Sunsets, in the Fields of Triumph.
The topic was Basic Spell Theory and the instructor was Gesine Kueper, a
mage of the faith of Mystra. Despite the bitter weather many people turned out
and it was generally agreed to be a great success. The first part of the lesson
covered the birth of Mystryl, the nature of the Weave, wild magic areas and
dead magic areas, and the ability to mend such areas as granted to the Chosen
of Mystra. There was a short break for refreshments, followed by a discussion
of spellcasting components, material, somatic and verbal. The lesson provoked
many questions and overran, leading to the postponement of several topics for a
second lesson, date and time to be decided. Many grateful thanks to Gesine for
her hard work and dedication, as well as to Lord Takket for the
organization and to all those who attended.

*In other religious news, we have heard reports of a gathering of the Church
of the Prince of Lies in the city of Zhentil Keep. Though this new flurry of
activity is unexpected, we should await further reports before drawing
conclusions.

Bards of the Realms

It could be argued that Ruilwyn Ashbow was destined to take up the life of a
bard. Born to a travelling family that hailed from the Dales, Ruilwyn - also
known as Wyn - is the son of a bardess and was taught music from an early
age. Now, having graduated from the Lady's College in Silverymoon and
Darromar's Sapphire Star School of Music, he is well on his way to becoming a
recognised name by music lovers across the realms.
Ruilwyn, who currently resides in Waterdeep - though he jokes that itchy
feet make this a temporary arrangement, says that for him, the music is the
easy part and composes works across a wide variety of genres. He told the
Good News: "The musical side is easy, I usually have a melody in my head by
the time I finish writing. I have some funny stories, a couple of nature and
travel songs, a few love songs... I love nature and the comic ballads, but
there's nothing in particular."
As well as perfoming solo compositions, Ruilwyn is one half of the duo Fire
and Monkeys, along with Hollenlark "Lark" Loreweaver. How did the pairing
come about? Ruilwyn explained: "It's a long story, and it begins 'one drunken
night in Shadowdale... It's not one for Peverell's paper, unless Lark
decides to tell it. After hearing one of our first performances, a
then-stranger said it was good, but it wasn't "Fire and Monkeys," referring
to one of Chance's acts."
So can we expect to see more from Fire and Monkeys in the future? Ruilwyn
said: "The solos are definitely easier to write... But there's nothing as fun
as a duet on stage. It all depends on what we have the inspiration to write
and the will to practice, emphasis on the writing part, but I think we would
both like to work on some more duets. It's not going to be easy to come up
with songs like Taerin Hond every time."
Already hard at work on new songs, Ruilwyn gave us a sneak preview of a new
song, which he hopes will be published in the near future.
"I'll show you the moon and the stars on the water
I'll show you the sun rising over the sea.
We'll visit the isles, where the wind's sweet as flowers.
Just come share a boat with my crewmates and me."
But does the fair maiden take up the seaman's offer? To find out you will
have to catch Ruilwyn for a performance or head out to Daggerford to buy a
copy of the new work when it hits the stands.

The Watch Blotter

The Lords have recently dealt with and closed several long-standing cases
under the purview of the Watch:

* Hrosskell Veinneson of Kelemvor has confessed and pleaded guilty to the
murder of Leveran Lightwind. Leniency in sentencing was requested from the
victim. The Lords declare Hrosskell is to be escorted from Watch custody to
the City Gates and banned from the City for 6 years, after which time he may
request a review of his status.

* Years ago, Castet Anereil confessed to treason against the City and was
placed in protective custody awaiting trial, at which time he became insane.
He has recently regained his wits, waived trial, and requested Lords'
sentencing.
The Lords declare Castet will be released with time-served, branded a
TRAITOR, and be subject to additional measures to ensure he does not pose
a further threat to the City.

* Elden "Bloodstaff" Alden's petition to have his long-standing banning
re-evaluated is hereby granted. A public trial will be held regarding the
events in question. Lord Isaldur will coordinate with Bloodstaff and be the
point of contact for any other such requests.

Festivals and Tournaments

A combat tournament for prospective knights was hosted by Sir Briek Blackthorn
of Tyr, within the Halls of Justice in Waterdeep. The tournament formed part
of an on-going series of lessons for pages.

Essentially the the idea behind the lessons is to provide the prospective
knights with skills they will not gain in the formal lessons, and to aid
those wishing to join knightly orders," Sir Briek told the Good News. "The
focus of this tournament was to give them an insight into different styles of
combat, in an arena setting."

Those who took part in the tournament, apart from Sir Briek himself, were
Sithiel, Fjotra, Lysaron, Kelend, and Daevanna. After three rounds of combat,
with the victor advancing to the next stage, the final round took place between
Daevanna and Briek. Sir Briek himself was the winner, though he commented
that the skills of the students Lysaron and Kelend were most impressive.

The next session for pages will focus on the subjects of etiquette and heraldry.
Once again the lesson shall be held in the Halls of Justice in Waterdeep, and
the guest speaker shall be Lady Estrild Menous. Those wishing to attend should

Silverstar Lunette Fellmane recently held a gathering within the grounds of
her Waterdhavian home for members of the Church of Selune. The Good News hopes
a pleasant time was had by all, and extends its congratulations to Keltorn
Larkspur for his promotion within the faith.

The Good News can confirm that General Lath'lain Dy'nesir of the Ebon Spur
has received the title of Spur Lord of Cyric. Whether this was by divine
appointment or self-promotion is unclear, as no trustworthy eyewitness
reports are forthcoming. It is known, however, that the new Spur Lord met Sir
Briek Blackthorn to duel outside the Waterdeep city limits not long ago. Briek
was set upon not only the General, but by the Cyricist's wyvern. The Good News
would urge those travelling near Zhentil Keep to be extremely vigilant in
light of this new activity.

Queenspire, a new temple to Umberlee found on the Sword Coast to the south of
Waterdeep's docks, was officially opened in the Month of Sunsets. Those passing
along the Trade Road have no doubt noticed the new structure rising from the sea
in the west. Followers of the Queen of the Depths gathered to pay homage to their
goddess, and The City of Waterdeep was represented by the Lords Lerytha Holt and
Isaldur Redleaf.

The dedication ceremony was led by Waveservant (now Wavemistress) Maeithra, who
designed the temple and oversaw its construction. After her speech of introduction,
offerings of sweets, flowers and jewellery were made by Maeithra. Offerings were
also made by those attending, including one on Waterdeep's behalf by Lord Holt with
the explanation "May She turn her vengeance away from the City." The gathering
concluded with a seafood banquet and entertainment by the Umberlant singer Jellybat.

An anonymous article arrived via the Magical Post just before this issue was
completed. It dealt with superstitions surrounding chimney sweeps, and,
while interesting reading, was unfortunately too long to fit into this issue and
had to be omitted. The Good News would like the author to know it shall appear
in a future issue, and invites him or her to make their identity known so full
writing credits may be given.

Waterdeep News

Chaos struck the Dock Ward of Waterdeep recently as the Ship's Prow Inn on
Fish Street was devestated by fire. Our reporter, Quin Widdershins, was on the
scene. Concerned citizens formed a chain, passing buckets of seawater from the
harbour mouth to the smouldering inn until bystander Ketlic Lohs created a
magical spring for the rescue effort to use. The singed innkeeper told our
correspondant that the fire was started by an explosion in one of the upstairs
rooms, though when asked who the culprit could be he replied "Why would anyone
want to do damage to good ol' Prow? It beggars b'lief!"
Open Lord Isaldur was also present, and provided some financial assistance and
reassurance to the now-penniless innkeeper. Our correspondant took the
opportunity to ask Lord Redleaf whether the disaster at the Ship's Prow would
prompt the introduction of a "rapid response" team to deal with future fires
in the city. He declined to give a firm answer, but suggested that any
suggestions or concerns should be sent to himself or Lord Takket Keppur for
consideration.

Lady Saranya writes - The skies above Waterdeep glimmered Pink and Gold this
past Seventhday when His Most Holy and Radiant Lord Lathander blessed the City
with a Visit during the occasion of the Investiture of three new Dawngreeters;
Casious of Silverymoon, Ripi Frosi, and Asadel Memnosh. We of the Dawnchurch
are ecstatic at this Heavenly Blessing of the recent additions to our
priesthood and believe it augurs a new era of Optimism and Great Works.
All folk of peaceful intent are welcome any time to the Spires of Morning to
view the Site of the Holy Visit, revel in the hospitality of the Dawnchurch or
find Guidance and Sanctuary within the Temple Walls. Please congratulate our
new Dawngreeters and be encouraged to request any aid of them, especially if
it involves dragons. (They're good with dragons.)

Spryndalstar, the Waukeenite celebration of all things magical, began the
afternoon the 14th of the Drawing Down, reports Kelsandra Kelila Wands.
Among those gathered were the organizer, lady Kesiel Tingilinde, as well
as various notables from all the goodly faiths. The celebration began with
lectures given by Lady Tingilinde, Mister Enig Quetia of Mystra, and
Master Gwain Rambash, who spoke of - respectively - the possibilities
of coinage and economy and why it is celebrated; the associations of
Mystra and Waukeen and the possibilities of the Weave; and the rescue
of Waukeen.
After the lectures, the festivities began with food and drink provided for
all. Then the crowd enjoyed a wonderous demonstration by Mister Quetia
concerning the clever use of magical wards, during which much laughs
and applause were given and much spinach was eaten. Lady Elke Ashbow
also gave a spetacular magical performance which involved stunning
illusions and some juggling, and concluded with her transformation into
a bird!
Aside from magical performances, there were also much singing and merriment,
most notably by Lady Estrild Menous the Lioness of Sune.
The festival drew to a close with the auction and marketing of magical wares
by adventurers across the Realms. Many hard bargains were struck and
much coin changed hands, but all walked away happier for the exchanges.
In conclusion, Spryndalstar was an astounding success and reminded us all
of the wonders of this world brought to us by magic, and how magic
has spread through the mercantile trade.
Much thanks are owed to Lady Tingilinde for overseeing this event, and
we must all look forward to a grander Spryndalstar in following years!

Knights on Duty

Greetings and good tidings to you the avid readers of the Good News all
over the Realms. At the behest of the editor I seek to keep you updated on all
of those who work towards Knighthood, and those already accoladed.

KNIGHTS
+----------------------------------------------------------------------------+
SIR HARROGTHY RALLYHORN, PURPLE DRAGON KNIGHT OF CORMYR.
A great warrior of the forest kingdom and loyal servant of Torm the Brave
Sir Harroghty is widely regarded as a great leader of men. Few could wish
for a greater comrade on the battlefield. Sir Harroghty is a member of the
most noble order of the Purple Dragon Knights, a great honour and worthy recognition of a successful career within Cormyr's standing army.
He is also an excellent teacher of arms and leadership skills, many squires
and pages have benefited from learning from him, not least of all myself.
Sir Harroghty is proof that one need not become a paladin in order to gain
a knighthood. If any have questions on such a path I would suggest seeking
him out.

LADY RAONA CORBIN, LADY KNIGHT OF TYR
Without a doubt one of the best knights of our generation, Lady Raona can
only be described, in my opinon, as Waterdeep's Champion. Many of you who
read this will know of all of the excellent work that the Lady has done for
The City of Splendors over the years, now being one of its Lords, and the
longstanding Acting Commander of the Waterdeep City Watch.
An excellent figure of Tyr's justice, Lady Raona is also well known for her
work in passing on her skills to those asspiring to future service, having
taught many squires thus far and still doing so. Unfortunately, however, she
recently has been waning in strength a little. I am sure you will all join me
in offering her the hope of a speedy recovery.

SIR ARAMIL NEIDRE, PALADIN OF EVERMEET
One of the few paladins not serving one of the Holy Triad, Sir Aramil is a
most noteworthy servant of the Elf-father and one of the first to have
been knighted in His service for many, many years. I myself consider Sir
Aramil to be a great personal friend, his years giving him a perspective
that others may not consider.
Sir Aramil has recently also taken to teaching, having made an agreement
with Squire Xryon of Helm to take him on.

DAME JAENOIC JERALD, HOLY WARRIOR OF SUFFERING
Dame Jaenoic, one of the most experienced paladins alive today, is an easy
person to approach with your troubles, and she always has a keen ear to
them. Dame Jaenoic is one of the leaders of the Ilmateri church, having
spent many many years in faithful service. Originally she was a cavalier
but soon decided that the path of the paladin was the right one for her.
Like Dame Raona she is renowned for many similar things - her service in
the Watch, her great efforts for her church, the efforts she has put
into teaching. The list goes on. As the two ladies Raona and Jaenoic
were knighted on the same day, you cannot help but compare today's two
senior paladins. While Dame Raona prefers the quill, it seems, Dame
Jaenoic is without a doubt one of the most skilled swordswomen I have
ever met, and she has great mastery over the gifts that her Lord has
given her - more so, I think, than any of us.
It seems criminal not to mention Dame Jaenoic's involvement in the
rescuing of the Merchant's Friend all those years ago, having been
part of the group that braved the Nine Hells to save the Goddess.

SIR KALLIAS AENTIUS, CHAMPION OF TORM
Now we come to Sir Kallias. It probably goes without saying that he
is the greatest warrior amoung the knights in the current day - although
tis difficult to choose between him and the likes of Sir Harroghty.
Sir Kallias's dedication to training is an inspiration, to all those
to whom prowess is such an important part of that which we do, if ever
I am in need of help or advice regarding my own martial training, he
is someone I go to firstly.
Sir Kallias is a high ranking follower of the Loyal Fury, if any seek
His path, I urge you all to get in contact with Sir Kallias.

LADY SARANYA OF LATHANDER
The joyful servant of the Morninglord, Lady Saranya is very much the
bureaucrat of our circle besides Lady Raona, having aspired to very
similar goals. She is one of the Lords of Waterdeep and yet another
veteran of the Waterdeep Watch. I feel I got to know her well in my
time working with her there before my own service in the organisation
came to an end. Holding the rank of Corporal, she has done much to
improve the welfare of the city and uphold its laws, for which I have
much respect for her.
A senior servant of Lathander, any who seek service under Dawn should
contact her.

Lastly I shall add myself, Sir Briek Blackthorn of Tyr to this list,
finding myself privileged to be a part of such a prestigious group.

SQUIRES

Tis my duty to inform all who wish to take on the path of the paladin
that currently no formal squirings have taken place for some time, nor
shall they until the revisions of the way that squires are taught
come into fruition. This means then that at present only those persons
previously squired before the revisions began hold the position, but
it remains to be seen how they will begin the new training and how much
of the old ways they have completed will contribute.

SQUIRE XRYON OF HELM
Many of you will know this man's name, he is most likely one of the most
longserving Helmites in history, although I cannot be certain exactly
I believe squire Xryon has lived(and died)for almost one hundred and
thirty years. How is this possible you wonder, well the power of the
divine is wonderous and it was Lord Helm's wish that Xryon live again
in a new body long after his death, after a service of some ninty years
twas His wish that Xryon complete the path to become His paladin. Squire
Xryon follows in the footsteps of some of the greatest paladins who have
ever walked this earth, Sir Exer and Sir Andreas to name a few of them.
Squire Xryon is now training under Sir Aramil Neidre, and I for one wish
him the best of luck with his studies and endorse his excellent progress
and progression towards paladinhood.

Currently the we have numerous students at this more informal stage of
the training due to the freeze on all squirings, at this point of the
training a page does not formally have a knight mentor, although many
knights have taken it upon themselves to aid the training of these men
and women. For some time now there have been meetings in which these
pages have come together to learn, all showing great promise.

Long ago, a king in distress had his life saved by a kind chimney
sweep. The king didn't get to thank the chimney sweep and, since his
face was so covered in soot from working, the king could not identify
him later. So to show his gratitude, the king and his retinue would
show respect to chimney sweeps from that day on by greeting them or
even taking off their hats, just in case it was the kind chimney sweep
that saved their king's life.
Ever since then, it's been tradition to show respect to chimney sweeps
and, from there, it became lucky to do so. You can capitalize on this
by bowing or greeting a chimney sweep. Even better is to, with
permission, touch him or shake his hand. This is commonly referred to
as "sweeps' luck."
It's even luckier to come across a chimney sweep on the first day of a
new year or on your wedding day. Even better, try getting a chimney
sweep to walk with the lucky couple or kiss the bride. Most members
of this profession know this tradition, so don't be surprised if

Milla DeSaynt reports on The Winterfest Celebrations

On behalf of our host, Enig Quetia and his wife Aveline Quetia,
we would like thank all of those who joined us on the Thirday,
12th day in the month of Leafall and the willingness that each
and every one of you brought so that we could celebrate this
Winterfest season with good holiday cheer. We are also thankful
to the Heartwarder Faria Cadence of Sune for having allowed us
the permission to use the magnificent ballroom in which the
festival was hosted at. A heart-filled gratitude also goes out
to the workers of said halls who aided us in preparing for
the activities.

As you all already know, at this merry time of the year we have
become accustomed to the good traditions of expressing
friendship and love, this time also allows us to make new
friends and to reinforce the strong bonds that we have made
throughout the years. We hope you all enjoyed the sharing,
singing, dancing, games, and the gift exchanges that went on in
this wonderful festive night.

Last but not least, we'd like to thank those who participated
in the snowman building contest. Some melted, some were
lopsided, but it was truly a great turnout! The first place
winner was to be crowned King or Queen of the Winter-Festival
and all were to obey their safe for the night.

Milla DeSaynt reports on the Informal Reception at the Spires of Morning.

This gathering started with Cirunt Brightsoul greeting the
guests at the Gallery of Paintings in the Spires of Morning.
After some time to chat and admire the lovely surroundings,
Dame-Paladin Saranya of Lathander arrived to greet everyone
with much joy. The actual gathering was held in the hallway
of the Spires of Morning where there was plenty of room for
the various tea and wine beverages that were had in goodly
fun. Wonderful pastries were provided by the shops there,
and many lovely bundles of morning glory served as beautiful
decorations.

Many came and many enjoyed this wonderful festivity. As an
addition, several songs were shared and sung to the public.
With this event we celebrate the annual Temple Cleaning and
welcome, with much joy, the Dawn of the new year that is
ahead of us.

And last but not least, the Church of Lathander wishes
everyone a Happy Winterfest!

The Church of Talos recently held a gathering in the city of Westgate. A procession passed through the streets and offerings to the Storm Lord were made outside His temple. Most of the ceremony was closed to outsiders, but an announcement was made of the plans for an expansion of Talos' temple.

In another religious news the faith of Oghma has appointed two new Lorekeepers to administer to the running of the Church. High Bardess Ynaura Larkspur has stepped down from her position in order to spend more time with her family and follow creative pursuits as a member of the Order of the Silver String. Priests Ramirus Dranigar and Peverell Goldfarb have been appointed her successors. A gathering at the Font of Knowledge in Waterdeep was held to celebrate this, and the Church of Oghma has also welcome Adrienne Dranigar as its newest Priestess.

Faria Cadence has succeeded Paige Dranigar as Heartwarder of Sune. Goldfarb's Good News wishes her every success in this new role, and is glad to announce that she shall also fill Paige's shoes in this very paper, by becoming our new Relationships Correspondant. Blysril, priest of Oghma, interviews Laitaine Beaumont.
Even as a child, Laitaine Beaumont of Milil knew she wanted to be a bard.
She would often listen to her mother, Maria, as she played, sometimes even
accompanying her. But she didn't think much of her skill, until she played
one of her early works at the Lucky Drunk. As she finished, she heard the
voice of Milil, the Lord of all songs. She then sat down and dedicated a song
to him, and he rewarded her with his symbol, marking her as his. She has
since gone on to publish seven books, including an especially moving song
called the Ballad of Elenore. She has recently returned from Tethyr, where
she was dilligently working on a new ballad about the ten black days of Eleint,
when most of Tethyr's nobility were slain in an uprising.
She is a very charming woman, who enjoys music, riding through the
countryside, and sipping a nice glass of tea. She also loves the theatre
and history and theological discussion. This amazing woman is still somehow
single gentlemen. Think you could be Mr. right? She seeks a confident man
with a wit sharp as a razor and strong opinions of their own. One who can
be serious when the occasion calls for it but also knows the value of a good
laugh.She adores roses and stawberries but please fellows spare her things
of an orangish color. She detest impolite people and whiners, as really folks,
it accomplishes nothing. I am sure I speak for all of us when I say we will
await her next ballad with bated breath.

Goldfarb's Good News is a publication that aspires to spread news and useful
information along Faerun, and everyone is welcome to help providing they have
goodwill to cooperate in this task. We welcome contributions from all, provided
they are of a factual nature and written in a neutral tone. Rumours, gossip, or
judgemental commentary shall not be included in these pages. Submissions may be
made in person or via the Magical Post to high-ranking members of the Oghman
faith, to be passed onto the editor. Examples of acceptable submissions include
news of weddings, engagements, births, forthcoming festivals, tournaments or
other gatherings, the establishment of guilds or opening of schools etc...
Advertisements for skills and services are also welcome, or job opportunities for
young adventurers. Any young or aspiring bards who wish to be involved in this
publication should contact the editor directly. We are also looking to recruit
regular contributors for columns on subjects such as wizarding news, farming and
agriculture, recommendations on recently published books, healing advice and the
latest fashions and trends. We are open to hear any ideas you may have for new
features.
