Aphyon Ul'trin
Famous among scholars of the Underdark is a magical weapon by the name of
Aphyon Ul'trin. Its rumoured origin whether truth or fabrication is recorded
here: Some centuries ago Teborvir Merolg was a wandering minstrel, dirge
singer and shadow puppeteer active especially in the Northdark, but having
appeared at times as far as Sschindylryn and Guallidurth, though he was
active mostly around Eryndlyn and Sshamath.
His works are tales and plays have often quirky tricksters who are able to
prevail against more powerful drow, such as wizards, merchants or even
nobles, by taking advantage of their stubborness and arrogance and pitting
one against each other, reaping eventually the fruits of their ruin. He was
wise enough, however, to leave the priesthood outside of such plots, either
avoiding to mention it at all, or keeping it as a distant entity that
appeared, from time to time, to crush ruthlessly one of the less lucky
characters.
There was a recurring rumor, also, that Teborvir Merolg was not merely an
artist, and that before he left a city or a settlement, some change of power
or unrest had taken place there. And the drive of these transitions happened
also to be, mor often than not, the death of some influential figure, leading
to speculation whether Teborvir was also a skilled assassin in addition to
his artistic vocation.
Eventually, however, Teborvir's luck ran out and he disappeared from the
scene. There are conflicting versions about how this came to be. The most
horrific one is that he was devoured by a deep dragon, whose lair he had
delved in, others simply report that some powerful wizard incinerated him and
yet others claim that he staged his death in order to retire gracefully to an
anonymous life.
Despite his passing the instrument with which he used to accompany his
performances was sighted from time to time surfacing in the Underdark in the
hands of some ambitious and often short-lived bards. Named Aphyon Ul'trin,
literally the sound of death, this ebony violoncello with spidersilk strings
is thought to be able to morph into a deadly weapon upon command of its
owner. If this is just an unlikely tale or there is some truth behind it, it
is impossible to know, unless one were to actually find the legendary
instrument.
