Magic shield damaging

Post by Cret » Sun Aug 26, 2012 2:50 am

This is what happened:

As you enter the cavern, you are caught by a sticky strand.
The cave fisher drops from the ledge and attacks!
The spider raises its foreclaws and launches into an attack!
Your stone skin absorbs some of a cave fisher's damage.
Your punch nearly removes a cave fisher's left leg.
(a darksteel shield with a large wormtooth spike gets damaged)
A darksteel shield with a large wormtooth spike falls to the ground in scraps!

Talking with the council they have never seen magic shields damage in years.

What I think is happening is that when brawling you have a chance of damaging what you hold,
even if its a magical shield...

I tested this in a couple of scenarios with the same shield (i100729, FLAG_MAGIC, and FLAG_MASTERWORK) equipped in both hands while brawling with mobiles. I battled with a hill giant (m82) and with a cave fisher (m12002) and my shields were not damaged either time. Then I fought three cave fisher's in a row, using the punch skill throughout each battle, and my shields were not damaged.

I have seen this happen before with mundane objects (forgetting, for example to remove a shovel after burying a corpse), but I have never seen it while punching with a magical weapon equipped.

Yes, to add more detail: my tester had no magical bonuses and leveled to amateur during the testing.

It looks like the cave fisher is using a program to initiate combat. Maybe in the program there is a line that inflicts direct damage to the PC it is affecting?

It is this damage that could be causing direct damage to magical equipment.

edit:

During testing, perhaps this program (which seems to be an entry prog) was not triggered if the mob was being invoked by an immortal directly into the room of your tester. Just a guess.

edit 2:

Didn't realize this was from August. Woops.
