* Crouching Wizard, Hidden Goblin

Post by Ceir » Sun Nov 11, 2012 1:31 am

So, I'm having a good bit of fun with the fly spell and a crossbow I bought, using them in concert against the goblins outside the Friendly Arm Inn. They're all equipped with melee weapons, letting me rain bolts of doom down on them in relative impunity... with one exception:
A goblin warrior makes a nice kick, but your crouch places his foot a mile above your head.
I'm pretty sure that incredible fifty foot jump kicks are somewhat out of genre (but then, I always figured 'a mile above your head' was figurative... maybe not). If this is working as intended, I'll just presume they're throwing rocks or something. It seems more likely than a wandering monk teaching them wire-fu.

I wouldn't call this a bug as much as one of those things that probably really isn't worth the effort to "fix". I cannot say with certainty though; I don't work with the hard code.

If you shoot someone in the same room then the code assumes that the opponent is close enough to attack you. If are flying and attack someone then they are able to fight back (mostly because people used to abuse this by flying around in really challenging areas and hurling spells). So if you are flying in the same room with an opponent and attack them by shooting then the opponent is able to attack you back; if they are a fighter then they will also use unarmed attacks (kick and punch), and that miss statement is always the same regardless of circumstance.

The easiest fix from my unlearned perspective would be to change the message if a kick is unsuccessful.

Oh, well, no. That's not how it works at present. If I'm shooting at the goblins and flying, their normal melee attacks never trigger. When I equip a melee weapon, they can attack when I attack (presumably because I'm swooping down to do so), but with the crossbow they never get normal attacks at all. The discrepancy between that and their kicks is why I filed the report in the first place. It seemed like a silly oversight that they couldn't reach me with their weapons, but could reach me with their feet.

I suppose that could be called code abuse? Frankly it sounds like good tactics. If they march out onto an open field with nothing but melee weapons, they deserve what they get. Still, if you tell me to stop, I will.

No, I wouldn't call it code abuse. This goes into Mask's rainy day bin though.

I just tested this and confirmed that situation. No melee attacks except kick when attacked with ranged weapons and flying. It's possible that the goblins did train in Kara-Tur.
