(Lack of) RP in the newbie temple

Post by Tamryn » Fri May 17, 2013 4:17 pm

Pretty bored of this:

Code: Select all

A male lightfoot halfling walks in from the west.
> l halfling
A male lightfoot halfling walks east.
You do not see that here.
I get that bashing dummies to death all day until L10 is pretty boring OOC grinding, but stopping for a chat would at least be a nice distraction for a few minutes.

Well, you can't force RP. I think there are two things to consider here:
1) Some people that are truly newbies maybe don't feel comfortable yet with the system, and feel embarassed roleplaying while they're still struggling just to get the mechanics down.
2) Those that DO have the system down and just don't want to RP will NEVER want to RP, and eventually will leave the game when they realize that very few other people respond to a character that does nothing except kill stuff.

I have always been told since I started that RP in the newbie temple is kind of a don't do. Not only because people might be fleshing out their character, and truly new, but also there is a whole world out there to RP in, and the temple should be a good start to getting a couple levels, not just being tossed into RP. Now that's not to say it doesn't happen. Some people do like to RP in the start areas, but you will find, a lot of people don't. Your best bet is to leave there, and find RP else where.

I'd also note: In a newbie temple a name may not yet be approved, thus stopping for roleplay is not always appropriate.

On a personal note: I honestly tend to avoid roleplay in these mindless areas until I am good and ready - you've just created and you might be working on a written background and description in a window over your FK window while bashing dummies, and that's okay! :)

Personally: I wrote my character before creation, perhaps not the name, but certainly guides for their history, likes and dislikes, etc. So when I came into FK I was ready to RP day one...in fact in the first training dungeon my very first character, may his soul rest in the void, started RP with someone right away. I was three minutes into FK and I was RPing.

Newbie areas are a great place to screw up with your RP, try out different styles and techniques, and ultimately if your character makes a drastic change from how they were in the Snookery, to how they are now at level 15...it really doesn't matter so long as you've fleshed out the RP and can explain your changes.

All of my characters are different from when they first slaughtered dummies for 7 levels. With my Ranger having the most drastic changes. We should encourage RP in newbie areas, there is no better way to learn it than to jump in and swim.

Reading my first post here, I think I came off a bit harsher than I intended. I don't mean to criticise newbies of anyone who deliberately avoids RP in the newbie areas :)

However, I definitely agree with Beskytter that, if nothing else, it's a great place to practice RP, especially with a new character that you might not be entirely sure of yet. Once you start doing stuff in the "real world", it's a bit trickier to change things drastically..

I agree that the training areas should be RP-if-you-want, but I have noticed a lot of 'walking away' with no RP outside of these areas and it is generally the OOC response of a low-level PC to a 'monster' PC in the wilderness. I would like it outlined in help that simply walking away with no attempt to RP at all is not accepted.

I will not point fingers here, I will just assume they were newbies... but still... it's bad form. I'm not talking about the PC who goes galloping or flying by at top speeds on an errand or somesuch, that's understandable, because it is usually not intentional since they didn't know you were going to be there and immediately backpedaling after the fact just seems weird. I'm referring to the PC who sees you enter a room and then immediately starts robotically spam-walking back to town.
