Arcane Armor

Post by Christolf » Fri Jun 18, 2004 2:12 pm

I recently bought the FR game Icewindale 2 for my PC and noticed a few feats that FK doesn't have, one being Arcane Armor. This feat go hand-in-hand with Armor Proficency in that it lessens the chance of spell failure while wearing armor. I've noticed that just training armor proficiency makes you able to wear heavier armor but your casting is still hindered, and just about the same amount. I know you guys are busy and I'm not telling you to go code it, just wondering if it'll ever get there. Thanks for you're time.

Even though Tyr said long ago it dosen't I still think still spell should eleminate spell fail chance all together. Why? Armor gives a failure chance because you can't do that voodoo that you do so well when you can't make the gestures, if you don't need to make said gestures then you won't fail because of your armor. The feat suggested here could be a weaker version of still and required to get still.

Armor proficiency does not affect spell failure at all. What armor proficiency does is make it so that most dexterity related skills are not hindered.

Wearing armor you are not proficient in gives penalties to all combat skills from dodge to weapon skills and multiple attacks.

If you are proficient in the armor you are wearing then penalties are only given to a small subset of all the dexterity related skills (the "thief" skills and arcane spellcasting)

Still spell now reduces chance of spell failure due to armor but it does not eliminate it.

Actually according to the Player's Handbook spells without somatic components do not have arcane spell failure which would include spells using the Still Spell feat.

I imagine that there are balance issues with giving mages the ability to wear any armors that are unrelated to what is in the PHB.

Possably, however think on this that if your mage wants to wear armor and cast completely fail free if Still spell was changed he/she would have to spend a minimum of four feats, Still spell and the three armor profs, plus have a rather large increase in the mana costs for there spells. There is a large game balancer right there. Even in armor a wizard with no mana is a sitting duck and useing any of the metamagic feats sucks your mana away at an alarming rate.

Also look at the fact that most wizard "builds" are simply not strong enough to wear the real heavy armor. Sure they can eventually use spells or items to buff themselves up, but they will never be on par with a fighter, or even a cleric.
