[Weapon] Maine Gauche

Post by Alitar » Sat Jun 29, 2013 1:39 pm

Critical multiplier appears to be wrong. it's intended to be 20x3 but it is currently coded as 20x2. Bugging it rather than suggesting because it seems like it was just a typo made when setting the multiplier.

I can't find this item in SRD. It is described here with a threat range of 20/x3 but is categorised as 'homebrew' with no source book listed. That entry also describes a +1 AC bonus when using it, which does not appear to be present on FK, unless it doesn't show up in score.

I am not really sure why the threat range of a parrying dagger should be different from any other kind of dagger.

I was just coming back to add a comment about the +1 shield bit being missing too. As for it being homebrew; I totally didn't notice that. I think if it isn't given the 20/x3 crit it ought to have the normal dagger's 19-20/x2 crit. If it doesn't follow that page then it should just be treated as a normal dagger
p.s. that +1 shield when using off-handed would be super cool.

This weapon is detailed as a piercing only weapon, and I believe the crit stats reflect that--20/x3 being the smash-'em-up equivalent to the typical straight-edged slashing weapons' finessed 19-20/x2.

I could not detect any increase in parry or +1 Shield AC on the live port, and 20/x2 is a pretty abysmal crit stat for an exotic weapon w/ no skill competency. As it stands, this weapon could use some love to be considered an appropriate/worth-while expenditure of a feat point.

I think anyone using this weapon would have the two-weapon defence feat, which wouldn't stack with the knife's +1 shield bonus as described here. So I'm not sure how useful it would be.

There are three main gauches in the game right now. Two of those are mundane and just weapon type 34 (main gauche), but the third is also that and has plus one to parry and disarm.

I would like to think that weapons like this could encourage some role-playing flair if they were all improved to match that one magical one, but I feel as if then people would just roll around with a main gauche only for the coded benefit. What's a good way to help out the swashbucklers without making another sought after piece of magical gear that every fighter will carry?

I think that we can do this in soft code without troubling the boss.

Perhaps making the Maine Gauche give that +1ac but require an exotic weapon feat? The feat would give it some extra cost and really, people swing twin bastard swords and battle-axes when dual-wielding so it certainly wouldn't be game-breaking. It would be on par. Especially considering how rare they appear to be.

Alternatively, I like the disarm/parry thing as well. I struggle to think of another good idea.

I think the best route is to make it exotic, if you can. Any time there needs to be a weapon that is above and beyond normal in functionality, the usual penalty is to make it exotic--to cost a feat. In our game we have a few standard feats--weapon focus, weapon spec, heavy armor op, shield spec--that grant +1 bonuses to combat stats; giving this +2 competence checks to those skills (disarm is a highly situational skill atm) seems in line with a +1 to hit/AC, so it's worth the feat to those who really want this style and breaks no traditions or standards.

I don't know if this even feasible but perhaps the bonus could apply only if the main-weapon is a weapon affected by the weapon-finesse feat?
