Wear Locations

Post by Elrendil » Sun Jul 07, 2013 9:34 am

I was thinking it would be nice to have expanded wear locations. The one in particular that came to mind and prompted me to post this, is a 'back' location. A location with possibly two (or even three) layers so that items could be worn without affecting the 'body' locations. For example: a cloak and a backpack (or quiver and cloak, or quiver/backpack/cloak, or whatever combination of 'back' appropriate armor).

It would be nice, and it's been brought up several times before. Unfortunately there's a hardcode limit to the number we can have, and we're at that limit already.

My level of knowledge when it comes to coding is pretty low, basically limited to having tinkered around with some basic MUD code in the past, reading some tutorials, and trying things out (modifying or adding a race or something, pretty basic stuff like that) so forgive me if me if I sound ignorant here. I do understand that FK will have already have been modified well beyond any MUD code I've looked at in the past. I don't quite understand what you mean by a "hardcode limit" though.

I'm not exactly sure what sort of limit it is, all I know is that it's there, or was the last time this was brought up. See viewtopic.php?f=77&t=15096&hilit=wear+slot

Sorry, I should have searched a little better before posting I guess heh. This is probably one of those situations of knowing just enough about a subject (meaning, next to nothing) to make myself look like an idiot lol. I figured it would just be a matter of adding in the location on the body, and of course the work of setting the items to that location, but like I said I really have no idea what's going on code-wise so I will just shut my mouth and go with the fact that it can't be done. ;)

Well... it seems unlikely that it can't be done ;-) But perhaps the effort of doing it isn't worth the benefit.

It can definitely be done, it just requires redoing the codebase to support it. Whether that's a major project or a minor one, only Mask knows.

There was a persistent bug a few years ago where one could wear an over item over their cloak. It was corrected. This was before the set system of wear values based on armour type and materials. Going back even farther, the previous owners and administration expressed a desire to create additional wear layers and areas but abandoned that later on. I honestly doubt that we'll have additional layers, but we did see a huge and beneficial change around two years ago, Mask made it possible to wear things on your belt in any order, which was much better than the previous system of having fixed wear locations on the belt.

Personally, I'm quite content with the current system, I think that everything has a reasonable place, but that is my own opinion.

I would like to see additional wear locations (pack + cloak, shoulders, tail, etc.), but I'm not going to be hugely disappointed if it doesn't happen. It's just something that might be nice to have, if it's not a lot of work (which it seems it might be).

I'm still fairly new and I know I've only seen a small fraction of the game so far. I imagine I'll get used to it and find different items and find a way to make things work. It came to mind due to having to choose between my character wearing his tabard, or his pack. From an IC aspect, there's no logical reason why someone couldn't wear both. But of course I understand the game is driven by the code and if it's not feasible to change the wear locations code, then I'll live with it. I had just figured I'd post about it to see what people said. :)

There are packs which can be worn on the belt, which would presumably fix your specific problem.

I wonder if all packs shouldn't fit on a belt? That would remove one of the most common complaints about wear locations, that you can't wear a shawl / cloak / etc. as well as a pack.

You can wear containers on your belt and some belts are containers themselves. The belt-containers are kind of rare as far as I know though, I think you can get one through a quest and the other is guild-locked.

I suggest more belt-containers. :)
