How do I explain FK to someone?

Post by Boreas » Sat Jul 27, 2013 1:12 am

How would you explain Forgotten Kingdoms/MUDding to someone who has never played D&D or anything like it?

It's like an old-school text-based adventure game, that you play with other people online.

Its sort of like.. You imagine you want to try and be like your favorite story character, or even get to create your own, you choose how you look, how you act, ect... then sort of write yourself into an interactive and choose as you go book that you can co-op with players around the world with. I always add that the programming, staff (volunteers to boot) and playerbase are all top notch, and the entire environment is super user friendly.

If they are old enough *cough*, you could point them to "choose your own adventure" series of books, like lone wolf, but instead of a book in a computer game, with several other players and much more interactive!.

Such great memories...

I don't know if nowadays they are still publishing that kind of books though.

Justice is not neccesarily honourable, it is a tolerable business, in essence you tolerate honour until it impedes justice, then you do what is right.

I always say it's like pen and paper without the mess--it's a DND game set in FR with a proper game engine. That usually works, I guess.

It's like being a Skyrim NPC in text.

Same.

Them: What sort of game do you play?
Me: Text based role playing game.
Them: Oh...text? No graphics?
Me: Yup.

Zork with friends. Which was featured in Saints Row 3, so can just direct them to that. If they haven't played either of these games, you should probably just stop being friends with them.

I usually don't have to... all of the people I interact with are nerds.

I guess a good way to explain it would be to say it is like reading a book, except you play one of the characters in it.

I usually describe it as being like WoW but without graphics, and with roleplaying.

When people ask me what I'm playing, I go very hipster on them...

This is one of my options of reply, too. But considering where I am, it's acceptable.
