Suggestions - Boots and Belts and Newbie Training Areas

Hey there,

I'm back in game with a new character, it's been years since I've played a MUD and I need to get back in sync with the systems. To get to the point, I've started a wizard and I'm playing in a land "far far away." Some of the newbie gear dropping are actually marked as light armor and cause me a penalty so I'm wearing my under tunic and under breeches as I level. That's fine for sure, but I do have some minor suggestions mainly referring to some "armor choices."

First - Boots and Belts
The main thing I can see these two objects affecting would be if you're trying to sneak around. There may be some other common sense things I'm not thinking about, but I do have a slight issue with the spell failure a leather pair of boots, or a leather belt can cause. The boots and belt shouldn't really hinder you much if at all when they're leather. The reason I make this note is I purchased these items in a Cloth based store, and now I have 10% spell failure. My suggestion is just a little more ease for these items. If anything perhaps remove the need to have these places "protected?" I do realize a bare foot is something that could be hurt more easily than a covered one, but there aren't a lot of options currently.

My other suggestion to this problem, if that's not acceptable, is just to give us more clothing options. In a Cloth store sell some kind of cloth belt and boots.

Second - Newbie Training Grounds
These are still very good compared to most games I play and I don't have much complaint about them at all. I'm playing a wizard, of course I'm going to be a bit..squishy. Though with the armor that's dropping, I can't use. Sooner or later my under breeches and under tunic are going to fall apart and I will be fighting dummies/goblins/what have you in a full monty state. My character may not like that too much. So my suggestion would be to have a vendor sell some "basic clothing" for those that cannot wear some of the gear that's dropping without spell failure.

That's all I can see thus far that may need some work, but along with these suggestions I want to say I do like some of the changes I've noticed. Great work on the progression, I can't wait to see what else has evolved over the years.

Use the mending cantrip to fix your gear or get armor in your spellbook. While affected by it, clothing will not be damaged, you will not have spell failure, and it protects you about the same as light leather would.

Also, there is a great need for belts that are protective, they guard your midsection and keep your guts inside of your body.

As far as boots go, I agree. It seems like ALL 'leather' boots are classified as armor and I have been searching forever for RMI boots that aren't armor... sadly, they always are.

Thank you for the suggestions, clearly I have not been around for a while and I'm pretty rusty at the game mechanics. I'll retract my idea of removing the need for armored belts and stick to the suggestion of more cloth available ones, as well as the boots. I know there are slippers available in some places, but if you are shopping in a cloth specialized store you should not find a leather belt or leather boots.

Thanks again though, I'll need to make use of the armor spell. :)

The reason leather trousers, boots, belts etc. affect spellcasting is that in D&D, you don't buy individual pieces of armour, you just have for example 'leather armour' and it's assumed you're wearing the entire thing. This rule translates into FK that if you're wearing *any* pieces of a particular armour, you take the armour check penalty for it for anything.

I would agree that those specific pieces of leather armour shouldn't affect spell casting, but if you're wearing platemail leggings, for example, I think it probably should.

I agree with adding more leather accessories coded as cloth.

Yeah definitely not a good idea to wear the chainmail unless you have the proper feats for that kind of spellcasting. Me..I don't, so right now when I fight I'm barefoot and beltless.
