I'm using long picks and I just trained improved critical. The threat range remains the same at

There are no long picks - light picks and heavy picks are weapons, long spikes are their weapon type or class. I'm assuming you have a light or heavy pick and trained as follows
train 'improved critical' long spikes
Picks have a standard threat range of 0, meaning they only inflict a critical on a 20. Keen weapons have a doubled threat range, meaning that a keen pick would inflict a critical hit on a 19 or 20, just as would be the case for a mundane pick held by someone with the improved critical feat. These two effects do not stack. So, my guess is that the pick in question is a keen weapon, having had a 19-20 threat range already, before training improved critical. You did train improve critical and it will double the threat range of a non-keen long spike, but it can not do anything further for your keen pick.
