Ranger Bonus Feats and Multiple Race Enemy
Ranger Bonus Feats and Multiple Race Enemy
Is it possible to code in bonus ranger feats for combat styles and the ability to have multiple race enemies as per 3.5?
Re: Ranger Bonus Feats and Multiple Race Enemy
Yes, it's possible, but I believe Mask has his hands full otherwise at the moment.

Yeah, I was hoping for the combat style when I first made my ranger, but was saddened to find out that they aren't offered.

Re: Ranger Bonus Feats and Multiple Race Enemy
I'm not sure how hard it would be to implement ranger feats it considering thieves, wizzies and fighters all get them. Extra race enemies would be slightly tricker?
My suggestion:
Ranger guild bonus feat - Endurance
Level 5 - Bonus feat
Level 15 - Bonus feat
Level 30 - Bonus feat
These bonus feats can be spent on:
Rapid shot
Precise shot
Point blank shot
Far shot
Two weapon fighting
Improved two weapon fighting
Greater two weapon fighting
Two weapon defence.

Re: Ranger Bonus Feats and Multiple Race Enemy
The topic was brought up before - viewtopic.php?f=77&t=16729&p=108488&hil ... ts#p108488 - Mask and Raona are, I think, the only ones who deal with guild files, and both of them are very busy with real life. They are not hard changes to make, persay, but they take time, and that is in short supply.

Re: Ranger Bonus Feats and Multiple Race Enemy
The .gld files do not include things like bonus feats, those are hard code changes that only Mask can make. Most immortals can change the details of a guild such as which skills or feats are automatic or available, but the changes being proposed here require the boss.
That being said, do not take this as discouragement. The best thing to do is build consensus and refine the suggestion to something executable that he can make a decision about.
For my part, what do you think about ranged feats in general? I feel that those need some work.

Re: Ranger Bonus Feats and Multiple Race Enemy
I think ranged combat as a whole needs looking into.
Re: Ranger Bonus Feats and Multiple Race Enemy
On the point of Race Enemy, the help file doesn't really provide a list of valid values for Race Enemy command.
Could I type anything I want, or is there a check to verify that the race given is actually valid?

Re: Ranger Bonus Feats and Multiple Race Enemy
Aye I agree Harroghty. The ranged side of things on fk need some work in general. We hardly ever see a ranged person in game via ranger or otherwise because it is heavily underpowered or just wonky? It would be nice to see some elvish archers and so forth running around and not be scoffed at because they use bows and the like.
Re: Ranger Bonus Feats and Multiple Race Enemy
Ranged combat has historically been weak in DnD. Only until the broken Gunslinger class in Pathfinder has there really been an equal to a strong melee build.
My experience with ranged combat is very limited, as I'm still fairly low level. I use a bow to bring enemies to me as single combatants, rather than walking into an entire room of them. I imagine that at higher levels, enemies are smarter and if one is hit they all come a running. The creatures I am fighting now one on one, I'm able to even cripple them fairly frequently, so that they aren't even able to make it to me. This allows me to kill such mobs without risk of harm. Obviously these creatures are lower level than I, since I'm able to solo them.
I've heard the party order feature in FK is broken. If that was fixed, ranged combat within a party would be useful.

You... You're kidding, right? About bows being weak?
A straight fighter in 3.5 that focuses on longbows is ridiculously strong. With proper feats and build, they can't be reached, and can shoot unfair distances.
Heck, I played a sorcerer this past weekend that used a composite longbow, and I was outdamaging the fighters without even trying.

I do believe there is a check in place to make sure it's a valid race selected. I've always assumed the options are from any humanoid race, however, we may need further confirmation on that. Although, I am fairly certain you can not just pick say.. honeybadger as your racial enemy.Wenin wrote:On the point of Race Enemy, the help file doesn't really provide a list of valid values for Race Enemy command.

You may have out damaged the fighters in your party, but that is relative to your party. There are power builds for melee that are insane when it comes to damage. As for feats that add damage, as long as you are sticking to core books and not 3rd party splat books, the first step of building the archer is to counteract the negatives of firing into combat... which takes a couple of feats, and then you can begin looking at adding damage or taking more feats to utilize AoOs. Then with ability scores, a melee fighter only needs to focus on greater strength, while archery must focus on dex and strength. Now I just discovered in pathfinder there is an Adaptive ability you can put on a bow, which will allow for adjustable strength damage... which is nice... but the bow's strength bonus must be predetermined at construction. So you best buy that +8 strength bow from the get go. =)
Of course the range component of archery based fighters is a big bonus, but I was speaking of damage.
Re: Ranger Bonus Feats and Multiple Race Enemy
Those are some excellent points.
Speaking on just purely damage... I will concede. I was meaning more utility. My games with well built bow-users always ended up with them being the person I had to tailor encounters around, to make sure things wouldn't just die instantly.
And, in support of your point: In the game, we were fighting ogres mounted in rhinos... they were dealing ~250 damage per hit. I triple checked the DM's build. All of it was totally legal.. 2h fighters are just unfair

Completely epic, and I must find a way to import rhinos into the region my players are in. =)Benorf wrote:ogres mounted in rhinos...
