So here come the dangers of me having ideas...
Often when characters have perfectly good items they don't want, they just drop them where ever they please. Which is perfectly fine but I was thinking maybe there could be some sort of unwanted item drop point. I don't want to call it a bin by any means, as these items wouldn't be the broken and tattered sort found in the Waterdeep dump, just a place where characters could leave unwanted items and someone else could rummage through without finding them on a shopkeeper's store floor or some such. I really don't want to call it something for new members/characters considering anyone of mine (maybe that says something about me ) aren't against trying to find the odd gem here or there.
I'm not sure if this would make better sense being something like barrels with lids in certain cities or chests. Guess whatever would make for the easiest scripting.
Just throwing it out there.
Unwanted Item Drop Offs
Re: Unwanted Item Drop Offs
What would make it make sense, is if in cities like Waterdeep... a guard/streetsweepers can pick up stray items and then put them at the dump.... problem is if someone is sorting through a number of items in say a stable... a guard comes in... and you'd instantly want to murder that guard. =)

Many temples and guilds already have rooms for this purpose.

I think that the guild/temple items are rarely used (at least so far as I've seen).
I think this is an excellent idea, though. I imagine in my brain an item:
{F0}a large polished iron trashcan.
I imagine this item (and/or variations) being a container like a chest, except items within each lose 1 level of condition every other IRL day. I also imagine the item producing 1 random item from something like the list below every other IRL day (which would then slowly decay like the good items.) If at reset-time, the item spawned one of each, then it would always appear that the trashcan had random contents throughout the week.
{30}a disgusting piece of trash
{20}some rotted covered in {A0}mold
{B0}a discarded banana peel
{80}a stiff dead rat corpse
{70}a wad of wet parchment
{D0}a crusty well-worn handkerchief
{10}some dark, bloody bandages
I just think it would be near to have one of these in one of the off-square market location at each city, where people could dump their trash, and others who's RP allowed could go dumpster diving, and have to rummage through garbage. Gives that visceral sense of "How bad do I -really- want that rusty shield...

Far away and across the field, the tolling of the iron bell calls the faithful to their knees to hear the softly spoken magic spell.

I believe it to be a fine idea, too. Unfortunately, it's not likely to happen in the short term for a few reasons (hard code mostly); the best course of action which I can recommend for those interested in this would be to either revitalize the use of existing storerooms or to take a page from the halflings and collect objects for mutual benefit.

Re: Unwanted Item Drop Offs
I was thinking - maybe an easier version of this idea would be to have a thrift shop (maybe repurpose Dazzling Dave's) where any type of item can be bought and sold. The vendor would buy any item for 1 copper, and sell these items for a few copper. I bet a lot of potions and wands would end up there for low-level characters to experiment with.
