Offerings to the gods & sacrifice

Quick question!

Can sacrifice be interpreted differently from ritually destroying anything? Or could perhaps be used to roleplay that you leave an offering to a god?.

Not sure how the sacrifice command works, but lots of deities actually take sacrifices--just not the remains of people in the case of good/neutral deities. Moradin's clerics, for example, sacrifice precious metals and gems on occasion.
