Attribute & Feat reset

Post by Briek » Mon Aug 25, 2014 9:50 am

As I've just been coming back to the game I've been noticing new things in the game and vast improvements across the board, one such improvement is that skill, feat & attribute trainers now are more widely available than ever before with better selections.

I bet some players of older characters might be thinking that they wished they were able to chose again, and maybe some newer characters too.

So it would be nice for all players to be able to reset their attributes & feats back to default for an appropriately high glory cost (say anywhere between 75 to 125 glory)

I'm sure it's possible to have a mob set with a macro for the task?

Thoughts?

That's not very much glory at all.

I stand with current policy of no resets for my opinion on the matter. It would all just be the same song and dance again in several years.

Tons of people would have benefitted from this in the past. Tons of people would benefit from this in the future. While some players have given up on old characters who don't have access to the feats/stat trainers they do now (and moved on to bigger and better projects), some still think resetting their feats and stats are a viable option. Beside the code work required to do so (and the high glory cost that should be associated - 100 glory is not *that* high), I don't feel this is worth it. I've wanted it in the past with characters, but why not just make a new character and new persona, and get all your fancy feats and stats with that guy instead of your old guy who just isn't up to snuff anymore?

Just my opinion, but work involved outweighs the benefit to players just making new characters.

Everyone plays the game a little differently. For some people, like myself, having a single long-term character who's personality is second nature is a huge part of the fun! I would not be opposed to a feat reset. Stat: no reset IMHO, but feats...the thing is, don't we like having some of the old characters around to bounce RP off? We're creating an incentive (albeit not a very strong one) to ditch older characters and build new ones every time something new and shiny comes out...like class-based bonus feats. I think having a mob who works off a Q-bit to empty out your feats completely, and give you the allotted number you are supposed to have (including any updates) say...once every 2,000 hours you play that character wouldn't be unbalancing, and would only serve to help older characters not be instantly outstripped by newer characters. This would have one major impact though, which I don't think could easily be addressed, but I also don't think it's overly important, and that's feats which must be taken at early level.

My 2 cents.

Your attributes reflect your character from the start of the game, now have I started a character and set his stats only to think later on "Oh sh*t, I should have put those points in wisdom towards constitution to get a few extra hp points later down the road." but hey, I think to myself that would be kind of min-maxing a character. Attributes can only be changed in my opinion through divine acts, or re-classing your character. A Life changing decision like that could warrant an alter of attributes, in my opinion. Feats, I am all on board for a Mob to be placed in the game that charges glory to reset your feat points. I think Glory is extremely hard to get for evil characters though (Anyone else see that?), but I digress on the topic. Feats can really add those special twists for your character, and can really make a character who they are. Some feats can only be obtained really at one encounter in the game and never again. I torture myself over feats sometimes, because I am like "Oh that would be great for this, but then I can't do this." Aldren was right when it might have helped some characters down the road or up the road, but I am the type of player that thinks that doing something just to make players happy just panders to our "lazy" player side. At the same time, I wonder, How many players start new characters because they only realize around level 30 that they messed up their stats? I mean, I am sitting here now thinking have I? No, Have I started new character because of new options that open up to me with kismet, sure! (And boy were some of them some fun characters! My newest one included!) So after all that, attributes I'm not so keen on changing unless through special means (Negatively and Positively) or through life event. Feats, I would support a mob being placed in to charge for the cost of a glory (250?) to reset the feat points, Or Perhaps, we could do 100 per point, and they choose which one they want to return. If that is possible, Full wipe, or just selection through glory. :D Peace out guys!

I'm glad to see some good discussion going on here, but I have to add that I think I agree with Mele about the glory. I think using the nice little stat we have in the score sheet "Hours played" is a better indicator of how/why someone is getting their feats redone (pedicure?). I think this because OLD OLD OLD characters fall into one of two categories: Those who have 3/4 of a billion glory from the billion quests they've done, or 3 glory because they've spent it all on renames (or in some cases, they spent it on the old glory system). Whereas hours played is an easy pick. Is this character old? Let's check. 1,950 hours? Yep. There's some time put into that character. 50 more hours, and she's ok for a feat reset. See you in another 2k hours.

I agree with Elenthis on this. 2000 hours is a *lot* of time spent on one character. If you played *every* day for 8 hours a day, it would take you just shy of 9 months to reach this point. Therefore, I think it's a pretty reasonable request.

I think it would be better to use the application system instead of a npc. You send in an application, if you meet the criteria (2000 hrs, glory, etc) then a member of the staff resets your feat points. This reset would not include the armor proficiency feat as well as feats that must be acquired before lvl 10. It would be nice if it also refunded glory previously spent on extra feat points. That is if the amount of feat points you are being reset to is less than you had.

As for resetting stats, I feel like most players with 2000+ hrs on a character would have spent glory to increase stats back in the day anyway. Probably not a huge issue. If it is, then you would probably benefit from restarting your character back at lvl 1.

The only problem with that is for characters such as my own. In my case, I did spend (almost all) of the glory I had earned on stats and feats "Back in the day". I was part of a small group of characters who were "Balanced" which is to say, I now have 1 fewer then the base number of stats a lvl 50 character would normally have, not even including the bonus class-feats. Though challenging code-wise, because of the way I play the character, this has only been an impediment for a single goal, and one I've managed to mostly work around. However, as non of the glory was refunded during those days (I believe they were planning on stripping and replacing the glory system) I am in the boat of being left with little to no glory, mildly nerfed stats, and missing base feats. I hold no ill-will, and make no complaint, but instead present this as a reason to say "After a couple thousand hours, a feat reset to be brought back into balance would be something I'd be delighted to see". As you might imagine. Also, while the glory may be relatively easy to attain, I think for this specific type of re-building, a mob and hours check with a Q-bit would be the superior method only because the benefit reflects the effort. So far, I think this has been VERY well discussed though. Kudos to all for sharing ideas!

Sorry to bring the subject up again, but I was thinking on a particular aspect of having a feat reset available. That aspect being the sharing of higher level spells through rp. I think this would be a great chance for older players to reset their feats so that they can take on the teacher and scholar feats. This means more sharing of higher level spells. Which means more balance and of course more role play. Sure you can get scrolls from a pretty good pool of players who know scribe but, I have to say, just buying a scroll off someone is lacking the incredible rp that the player base provides. Also, more players with the teacher and scholar feats might increase the number of players that take on apprentices which is great fun for veteran, intermediate and new players alike. To make a thesis statement here; the availability of a feat reset option would increase role play by allowing spells to be taught by a wider range of players through the teacher and scholar feats.

I don't really care about hours or glory, if a feat is changed or the mechanic related to it is, it is fair to give someone an opportunity to exchange it.
