Random mobs in cities and how to deal with them.

Post by Lylena » Mon Jan 19, 2015 12:11 am

Hey everyone,

If you see a random mob IC that looks out of place, please do everything you can IC to find out if the owner is near by, or something, before charming/taming/otherwise claiming it. It may be a pet to someone and it may not be obvious at first that it's a pet.

I'm kind of speaking for myself here, as this has just happened, and if I'm way out of bounds, feel free to correct me. I understand there's a bit of fault on my part for not being with it at the time it happened, but the circumstance in which I received the pet was a bit of a special one, and it's bound by code to not go into certain areas.

Just asking everyone to please be a bit more aware before using those handy dandy skills.

Actually there's not really an excuse for this.

If you try to kill someone's pet with "kill pet" it prompts you with "You have to MURDER another player's pet" or something similar.

So, really, don't kill other players pets. Familiarize yourself with PK rules, as breaking them have consequences.

I'm not exactly sure what happened, but it sounds more like someone claimed her pet, instead of killing it. Perhaps claiming another person's pet could have a similar syntax as when you decide to kill someone's pet?

IE:

claim XXX

XXX is someone's pet, are you SURE you want to do that?

Just a thought.

Woops, I wrote before coffee!

I would bug report this, as I do not believe that should be possible - but it would require hard code I wager!

This, exactly. However they admitted to using a charm spell which broke the owner/pet connection. But something prompting to let others know that those mobs are tied to someone (if they show up in your score, there must be some behind the scenes tag on them that marks them as an individuals?) would be super helpful also.

Suppose at this point it'd turn into a suggestion/bug report rather a general discussion :D

This was me.

The situation was basically that my character saw a very unusual animal in the city, the description was made it seem to be a monsterously large animal (snake) and it was alone in the area. ICly, (and OCLY) it seems to be something that made its way into the city just wandering around as mobs do and i cast a charm spell on it to get it to walk with me out of the city. It was all done rather innocently and it was, to me anyway, expected druid role play.

It did not even occur to me that it was another players pet, there was nothing at all that make me think it was linked to another. The adjective and description were both ordinary. I would have thought (and hope for the future) that the charm spell would have kicked back at me if it was linked to another. I am sorry for taking away the link to your character, I do hope it is restored. It would be fantastic if claimed animals had something on them as an indicator as that would probably solve the issue completely.

Seems perfectly innocent to me, and with all the weirdness that generally centers around Waterdeep I can understand the mistake.

Is there anything harmless that would work on a non-pet mob but wouldn't work on a pet that might give us a clue in the future?

Maybe the "order" command? If you do it on a non-pet mob it says "Do it yourself!" but I don't know what it says if you do it on a pet mob that someone else owns. (Testing required.)
