It's lonely in Menzoberranzan
Re: It's lonely in Menzoberranzan
I'd like to know, somehow, what exactly tieflings are. I've only seen them on one other game, and they were evil little things, very dark.
All these perspectives is giving me some good info. I appreciate it very much.
Is it coded that the drow can't handle sunlight? Are they all, always, super dark-skinned and white-haired?
(Can't look at pics since I'm blind in RL. That's why I'm asking.)

Aasimar are Celestial-blood (angel-esque creatures). Tieflings are Infernal-blood (demon-esque creatures). I hope that gives some insight, though I'll defer to those who play them.tiyari wrote:I'd like to know, somehow, what exactly tieflings are. And while I don't know if it's coded about sunlight (because that would require my Drow reaching the surface without being devoured by a purple worm and other nasty critters in the Underdark)... I can tell you that it's coded for Drow to be blinded by very bright torches - especially if there is prolonged exposure to the bright torches. Though, I suspect that there has to be an object or something to trigger the hard code blinding... you just can't pose a bright torch and expect to blind Drow.
Re: It's lonely in Menzoberranzan
In many ways, drow resemble eladrin. Drow have obsidian colored skin and pale yellow (or pale golden), silver or white hair, the latter being by far the most common. This hair is carefully groomed and cared for by most drow and worn long with jewelry and other accessories decorating it. Like all elves, drow are incapable of growing beards, though many males are fond of long sideburns.tiyari wrote:Are they all, always, super dark-skinned and white-haired?

Drow eyes are usually bright red, but some are known to have different colored, commonly much paler, eyes such as blue, lilac, pink or silver. Sometimes their eyes are even green which would implicate that this particular drow has some surface elven blood in their veins. They usually vary in height between 5'4" and 6', and weigh between 130 to 175 lbs on average. Like all elves, all drow are handsome and beautiful.

Any chance they will be lowering the kismet cost, seems kind of steep. I want to create a drow but am only at 100 hours in the game.

Man, I wouldn't worry about it. If you keep at the game, you'll be having excess kismet before you know it. The stuff builds up fast.craser wrote:Any chance they will be lowering the kismet cost, seems kind of steep. I want to create a drow but am only at 100 hours in the game.

For those that are curious about the Drow and want to see them in action, we're holding "Open Days" down in Menzo on Saturday, November 29th - starting at noon EST. I've been trying to get the word out ICly... telling merchants and such. Even made a couple of posts on message boards.
Might be a good (and fun) idea to make a trip!

Drow are simple. Take everything you see in a song of fire and ice / game of thrones and flip the genders around. You have the general drow society right there.
Everyone wants station and power, most of all the females. Spend all your waking hours thinking about it and plotting. You may think, oh, males are only good for sacrifice and fodder. That really only happens if there is much more to gain for the female. They are bloodthirsty and may be crazy, but most priestesses aren't dumb enough to give up a powerful asset in exchange for "just because I can".

So to answer the tiefling question. Tieflings are technically any Mix of demon and any other nondemonic race simple as that.
I say technically because people rather like to limit it to demon mixed with human in the majority of cases but yeah.
This also holds true for Aasimars, and any half elf mix.
As to what they look like, it depends on what mix you decide your character should be. To take an example from my favourite tiefling character in the FR universe. A demon, elf mix, is the 5 foot nothing of an elf, with one blue eye, one red, but has red tinted lightly scaley skin and perfectly straight white teeth. But also the demon traits can be relatively next to nothing and concealable like a normal human with a clawed left hand, or cloven hooves.

I trained up double-edged bananas because the uber-plantain of doom I scored from the beehive quest was the best weapon in the game. Now it's being treated like a bug and they have gimped its damage! That's not fair! My character is ruined!

Actually, a tiefling is always the result of human and evil outsider ancestry!
From the Races of Faerun:
From the Races of Faerun:
It goes on to describe likely features, depending on the ancestry, but says that "[they] look human except for one or two distinguishing features related to their unusual ancestor." There are also mentions of their human descent in the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting(applying generally to the Planetouched described therein), and the 3.5 Monster Manual.Tieflings are the distant descendants of a human and some evil outsider, such as a demon (usually a marilith or succubus), devil (usually an erinyes, gelugon, or pit fiend), night hag, rakshasa, or even a servant of an evil deity... Fiend-touched and similarly tainted mixes of elves (notably the fey'ri), orcs (such as the tanarukk), and other races are known, but those are distinct lines and are not true tieflings.

Well, blah. I didn't have this thread marked to send me replies, and then life happened, so I only just now found the post about that open day on Nov. 29. I'm sorry to have missed that.
I have a million more questions.
How does someone who has never played a drow start out? How does one who doesn't know Menzo start out as well? Are there other races there, or just drow? Can it be reached from, say, Skullport or other places?
I wish I could look around and see some live drow RP just to observe to see if it's something that would interest me at all. I'm afraid to spend all that kismet someday and then realize I don't like the atmosphere, type of RP, or character.
Thanks to all of you who shared descriptions of the two races. On FK specifically, are there any drow, regardless of which sex, that do not have white here? I read what the wiki said with some intrigue--I'd only ever heard of white hair.

Re: It's lonely in Menzoberranzan
If you are able to go back through page two of this thread, it has some very good examples as to how a drow should act. If you're unable to, I'm happy to copy and paste it. Starting new though, I believe it's much like other starting cities. You'll have to do some wandering around to get the hang of it, only without as much help from others.
I remember from the past, seeing some drow logged role play, and I'll try to find those for you soon, as it might help out a bit. Spending the kismet though is a risk you take with any special race, often times worth the try.
As for the hair, Lysha explained it pretty well, above.

It might get less lonely - with a certain new area more players might come by!
Re: It's lonely in Menzoberranzan
We have a new area down there? Seems like my little drow needs to come out again.
Also as a side note, if you are a drow player and want some rp, I'm always in for some rp! Even when I'm on my other characters (and not in some rp there). Do not hesitate to contact me.

Who recovers your corpses when you die as a drow? That looks like a seriously long wait.

Re: It's lonely in Menzoberranzan
Oh man heh. At the time I was playing a drow my free time was only during serious dead times for playership let alone in menzo. A magthier student dropped me from 80% hp to dead in one punch when he was only doing max 5% damage and unfortunately it took so long i just kicked the drow bucket over and granted I was a touch wtf just happened + blank face + well ok then... guess i'm going to read a book for a while. Until then I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the soloing and the challenge considering how boring i find no rp muds nowadays.
I'd say playing a drow here is hard mode but i've played a traditional built wizard and I think the patience it takes for the latter outdoes any form of skill requirement of any other role but could be wrong.
The real question is though Ungtar... who gets the deep gnome corpses when they die?
