Re: Favourite character class and why
Too cumbersome in a mud or a tabletop for me. I think part of the reason of what put me off from druids and rangers originally was animal companions... What I have to make this character? And? keep this other intelligent animal character too? My familiar's just stayed in my robes and starved to death if the DM never called me on it.
Pet classes in anime and vid games are some of my favourite characters though. They make them very stylish. Everything from Kiba, to the fate series, to our elustrious Miss Yuna:

To this creepy looking dude:

Good ol' 90s charm... I'm thinking of digimon too but digimon is too good to be profaned here.
Anyway, It could be argued that a fighter is a wizards pet class/meatshield? Have you found a way to make this work for you here? Or Has FK fleshed out some of your other favourites more?

I trained up double-edged bananas because the uber-plantain of doom I scored from the beehive quest was the best weapon in the game. Now it's being treated like a bug and they have gimped its damage! That's not fair! My character is ruined!
Re: Favourite character class and why
All wizards are a pet class, it's just their pets aren't as controllable.
I love the druids for their roleplay and lore, but I guess I tend to walk back to the clerics everytime in a mud because of their mobility. I'm an explorer, so the utility spells a cleric gets (that a druid doesn't entirely get) are something I come back to again and again.

Thayan Knights are the epitome of meat shields. They were all taught that their lives have no importance and only exist to protect their Red Wizards. It's like having a secretary-bodyguard that fights to the death and worships you as a god-king.

Aye its hard. I've hardly ever toyed with the pet part of the class.
If we could acquire the whole summon your pet to you or dismiss it once it's to injured...would be awesome! Because when a pet gets beat up. and your in a dangerous place. You can't just send it away. But if you tame an animal for a little bit it can be useful.

Re: Favourite character class and why
perhaps suggest a dismiss syntax to a summon animal spell? you buy a pet and can forever summon it and dismiss it back to its own recall location where it auto goes to sleep?
Kind of tired but thats just off the top of my head.
Its one of those things that I wish i had the time and mental acumen to learn to code spells here... but anyway.
Pet classes are fun, but my issue is managing both them and my main char. Its like I don't have enough personality to rp both at the same time or something, meh.

I've done so, and it's a lot of fun, but polymorph doesn't last very long for a druid and you can't extend it because it's a 9th sphere spell.Maetha wrote:

In PnP I'm always a rogue kind of guy. I like being utility whilst maintain myself as a party member that can contribute damage where it is needed. There is an appeal to a wizard, but as Lylena said I have trouble actually picking decent spells and maintaining them as I should.
In concept though: I absolutely love druids. I guess that is just the hippie in me.
I'm always reminded of the episode of The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy where they meet a druid.
As far as FK goes:

Re: Favourite character class and why
This is a fun question. I remember starting out, playing 2nd edition with some friends. I played a halfling rogue, not really knowing much about them! That was a good time...I remember trying to impress someone by backflipping off my wardog, only to fall flat to my face. The next time we played, I was a cleric. I have a hard time roleplaying my characters in real life without laughing, so thankfully that playthrough didn't go very far!
As for D&D as a whole, I generally go with wizards, or a combination wizard/fighter when allowed. Their sheer utility and power just makes it so you can get the most out of a game (BG, BG2, IWD, IWD2, etc.) If there's one thing that FK has done with wizards, is create a proper amount of mystique for the class. I have a couple low level ones, and they are a difficult class to stay interested into at that stage! However, if you stick with it, i'm sure there's great reward.
The only class that FK really changed my opinion on was the cleric. For this game, it's by far the most well-rounded, which is often what I look for a in a game. It allows me to explore all the world has to offer, anytime I want really. Not to mention, in FK specifically, your faith is taken far more seriously than in D&D games, and sometimes even tabletop.
Speaking of new games....Sword Coast Legends anyone??

Even before '74, the precursor to D&D had Dwarves and Elves as their own class.Alitar wrote:Larethiel wrote:Elves. Wait...I mean... You're not wrong.Dungeons & Dragons (1974–1976)
The elf first appeared as a player character class in the original 1974 edition of Dungeons & Dragons.[2][3] The aquatic elf was introduced in the 1975 Blackmoor supplement.[4]

Personally I think they should have been kept out of human classes..
Clearly I enjoy bards, and I blame the Brave Sir Robin's Minstrels for it.
Edit: Ugh, not Chainmail. What am I thinking of?! There was a board game with a dungeon, and monsters in each room, and it was quite literally the pre-cursor to 1st Edition D&D. I *thought* it was Chainmail. Will keep digging until I satisfy this knowledge or someone corrects me.
2nd Edit: Dungeon! ...but alas, I think D&D predates it a year. Nerdlore fail.

I bought my first D&D set at (I think) Golden's Book Exchange in Waco, Texas. It was '78. I remember that because it was the year I broke my left arm and couldn't write out all the fidgety stuff. It was a little white box.
Nobody knew what it was and I lived pretty rural so there weren't a lot of other kids to play with anyway. So I played all the parts. Dungeon master and three separate characters.

Re: Favourite character class and why
I played my first game of D&D with the 3.5e Red Box- back in 2006- with a group of friends where I made a Fighter devoted to Wee Jas. I can tell you not much happened that night because we took three hours making characters and then "played" for all of thirty minutes.Ungtar wrote:I bought my first D&D set at (I think) Golden's Book Exchange in Waco, Texas. After that it was all internet games and their horrors until Svenrick and a mutual friend of our's just cheesed around playing 4th edition and being fun. I've DM'd for many years- rarely successfully. But Svenrick and I are similarly rural so...

Re: Favourite character class and why
I really dislike 3.5 as a system. I won't ever volunteer to DM it and the only way I can play it is if I make really cheesey power builds because of how bad the power creep is in that game. Very happy that FK didn't follow it down that route for the most part.
We've had a good mix of basic, do one area kind of thing type classes but now I'm wondering if most people prefer playing the base. Fighter, wizard, cleric, rogue, paladin, but mi amigo Talos (so wonderful to say it with a spanish accent) and Meatha make me wonder if people generally prefer these base ones or something a bit more mixed up. For example the path finder Magus.

For people unfamiliar with, or who don't want to bother reading. The Magus is basically just what Paizo did when they wanted A wizard and a fighter to have a child. It doesn't quite match up to a fighter in devastating martial prowess but if It wer on Fk, it'd be something like... gets half the bonus feats that fighters gets light armor proficiency and can cast spells whilst wearing light armor without fail. Gets all the weapon profs of a fighter but no shield prof. Gets a reduced wizard spell list and can prep and cast almost as many spells as a wizard all the way up to level 6 spells. Gets a rogue's Base attack bonus progression and all the way up to 3rd attack.

Re: Favourite character class and why
I, personally, hate how restricted character classes are here- it's completely against the idea of 3.5e and it's own diversity. I came to the server expecting, from the label that said 3.5e on MUDCONNECT, to act like 3.5e, but instead it's some strange mash of AD&D and 3.5e.
I like options- I like things off the beaten path. Sword wielding mages in armor, support casters that have pets to offer combat aid, healers that focus on mitigation over regeneration. Classes like PF's Summoner, Hunter, Alchemist, and the like appeal to me. They don't match the video game fun of things like FFXI's Beastmaster or Summoner, but in PnP games- especially those based around D&D- action economy is the quickest way to break the game. Acting through four different character's turns not only slows down the game, it also turns you into a one person party.

Re: Favourite character class and why
I love restricted guidelines for classes. It keeps irregularities down, but allows for slight unique changes via feats. My favourite class is the ranger. Though I do enjoy them best in 2nd edition.
Justice is not neccesarily honourable, it is a tolerable business, in essence you tolerate honour until it impedes justice, then you do what is right.

Re: Favourite character class and why
When I still used to play d&d we went for the 3.5 system which I found really to be more easy to understand than f.e. Ad&d. My favorite character classes were the ranger with the archery-specialisation and, even more so, the rogue buttered up with some archery feats and a bit of fluff. Wow, I had an obscene damage output.

If you have the time, you should give 5th edition a look. Not perfect, but its slowly getting to where it does what everything 3.5 didwithout millions of books and +2 -2 bonuses for situationals.
