I propose that you cannot give quest items to the mobs who are not suppose to receive them. This being a mudd sometimes instructions can be kind of confusing, and the penalty of failing a quest or forward a quest line is to harsh for such a simple mistake.
Its happened to me twice already,
once was because of a typo, I gave the wrong item which was a quest item to the wrong mob and I could not get it back. That entire questline now was "failed" and I could not continue. Which sucks cause I was enjoying it and I wanted to continue.
Another time I had to get an item for a questgiver and 'give' her the item. She had me get something else I got to the square and 'give' her the item and all she wanted me to do was say 'Yes' . So there is no way to get this item back and I just "failed" the quest. Its silly, not realistic, and poor for roleplay.

Re: Cannot give quest items to incorrect mobs
This would include going to every single mob and rewriting the quest code to not accept items that do not match the vnum of the quest items they are looking for. This is pretty much impossible.
The best thing to do is just be careful. Pay extra attention to what you are giving and to whom. And when this does happen, the staff is usually pretty great about helping people out when they do mess up like this.

Oh, maybe ill give contacting them a shot. I thought they were very stringy on resetting qbits.

Re: Cannot give quest items to incorrect mobs
I have done this on a few occasions. I was told to put in an application. The fix is normally pretty quick and not a whole lot asked if you give a good description of what happened.
