Tournament questionnaire
Tournament questionnaire
Hey everyone!
I personally feel this last tournament was a blast. It was a bit different than what we've done in years past and I'm rather impressed with the turn out.
For the sake of keeping things going, fresh and alive when it comes to tournaments, what would you like to see? What could have been improved on? Have ideas of your own? Let me know! Comments here are welcome, as well as PM's offering suggestion or comments. What did you like best, what was the worst?
We'd like to keep this idea alive in the future, perhaps work on it and consider new possibilities.
That said, do bear in mind this was a tournament specifically for fighters. Ideas/suggestions/comments would ideally like to be geared in the same direction. If you have ideas as to how to open a fair tourney up with other classes, I'm all ears via PM.
As well, thank you to everyone who participated! You are what made the tournament. And thank you to Tempus for so graciously organizing/hosting it!

Re: Tournament questionnaire
I really enjoyed seeing how my fighter measures up to others and there were some surprises as to which char won which fight so it kept me interested all the way through.
The only improvements I can think is to possibly make a seperate devision for fighters of lower level or have a format where the win condition isn't to beat opponent to stun but rather perhaps a 3 round spar with the tempuran judging the winner on how well emoted the combat round was.
During this tournament. I felt there was room for tournaments with other classes involved. E.g. Tourni of the gods:
Across the lands, priests and holy warriors gather to show off their martial prowess and establish a pecking order in their region for who's god has true strength!
Each faith nominates a team of priest + fighter, or priest + paladin to face off against each other with the winning faith gaining something like a faster regen room with the rest code on it until next year's tournament.
Tourni of the scoundrels:
Hire yourself a mercenary and come join this no hold's bard event in the bowels of west gate.
This would be a fighter + rogue team event where anything goes. Stealing from your opponents during prebattle banter. wands, Potions and scrolls if you can work out a buddy system to make it work for you.

I trained up double-edged bananas because the uber-plantain of doom I scored from the beehive quest was the best weapon in the game. Now it's being treated like a bug and they have gimped its damage! That's not fair! My character is ruined!
Re: Tournament questionnaire
You forgetting druids and rangers in there too y'know!
Re: Tournament questionnaire
I really do feel that it could have been expanded to include the underdark fighter's guilds.
Justice is not neccesarily honourable, it is a tolerable business, in essence you tolerate honour until it impedes justice, then you do what is right.

Re: Tournament questionnaire
Druids and rangers don't often use their powers for much outside natury stuff though. I was hard pressed to think about how to justify druids more than rangers taking part in a tournament for what is little more than bragging rights.
I suppose for churches without active paladins, A ranger could take their place.
I would've liked to see a wizard tournament, but we really need a stadium room so we can watch them at their most dangerous or implement my clairvoyance / mass clairvoyance idea.

Re: Tournament questionnaire
We might as well go for a Grand Tournament in the future, for all classes. Different events would be fun. I'd like to see some archery, jousting, mud wrestling, drinking contests, magics shows and all the other medieval fair goodness.

Obstacles are those dreadful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal.
Re: Tournament questionnaire
The tournament was fun and offered a good chance to see how a character compared to other characters in terms of fighting ability... but there was one thing that made some characters outclass others that made them a bit titled in that person's favor.
Magic weapons that do magic damage aside from bonuses to hit and natural damage, such as elemental or stat damage.
The option had been made for us to designate request for a mundane match but had to provide our own mundane weapons /and/ both parties had to agree. I found it hard to make a Tempuran character demand mundane weapons and armor in the fight when it would have been dishonorable to turn down the challenge based on something like this. It stacked the odds against some of us in a difficult way.
If we do fighters only tournaments, it might be best if the church had some generic steel weapons available in a chest and fighters came in mundane armor without any magical gear. Truly level the field to make it a show of who has built their character and skills best. Make it an across the board rule, not an option with if statements.

Re: Tournament questionnaire
true but we also have to get the idea that rangers are just cut and paste foresty types as well. Rangers are far more than warders of the tree's and plains. They could be the one that delves into the pits of civilization and what its grown over to brave old and new danger alike. One that travels the underdark to test there skill in there homeland (like svirfneblin rangers) The wayward sailor of the sea that see's his home on the high sea's and is an extension of it doing his part to safe guard it from troubles from the deep or from civilization itself! Now druids yes, but foresty folk like druids are all about nature and balance. That means fighting for survival and even the wild creatures play and test there skill against one another. Plus druids themselves are sentient people and we all like a bit of competition!
Re: Tournament questionnaire
Although I didn't participate in the tournament directly I found it a lot of fun to watch.
There are a few things I would suggest:
In the past I remember there being tournaments for the different classes and the winner actually got the hero title, so for instance the winner of the Mages guild was the high mage until the next tournament. Would it be possible to re-implement something along these lines? The hero wouldn't get any coded benefits (other than some reward up to the imms discretion) but would instead be able to call themselves champion fighter, high thief, high wizard, etc. I also remember there being coded tournament areas that had unique items for the participants which was fun.
The other suggestion I would have would be setting up event times, maybe 2-3 events over the course of the tournament where people can plan and gather together at that time. However I would also like to see it organized like this tournament was, where two people who needed to fight can meet whenever outside of the event and be observed by a Tempurian of rank. So basically having both, people can meet for matches whenever, and the events serve as gathering times as well.
I would also like to see different tourneys for the different classes, but I think that it should generally be kept within the same classes. So wizards would have a tournament fighting other wizards, priests the same, rangers the same etc.

Re: Tournament questionnaire
Seconded. My Tempuran didn't use his because he doesn't enjoy relying on magic, or magical gear but is merely pragmatic about it.Beskytter wrote:The tournament was fun and offered a good chance to see how a character compared to other characters in terms of fighting ability... but there was one thing that made some characters outclass others that made them a bit titled in that person's favor.

From an OOC standpoint until the extra damage is subject to the killmodes, its best never to use these weapons outside of an IM watching and guarding against it.
I did forget however, to suggest a jousting competition. I believe mounts can be put to stun using the order command and since actual cavalrymen are a rarity. It should prove interesting who's chars can be stretched to their skill set to meet teh challenge.
On second thought. Mounts set to killmode nofight, and PCs turn off autoassist since I believe in jousts. In no way is the animal supposed to be targetted or hurt but I'd be up for a free for all kind of mounted combat tournament too.

Re: Tournament questionnaire
I'd like to add support for jousts as well. I remember quite awhile ago there were some, and there was a way of assigning points (I never actually learned how that part worked). The one that I was able to compete in was a blast, and I would love to see them return again!
Re: Tournament questionnaire
First, I would like to see an IC way of incorporating the fighter's guilds in the Underdark. Perhaps the surface guilds and the Underdark guilds could fight independently of each other until a victor for both has been found. Then the two victors meet in a neutral arena.
Second, I would like to remark on banning any type of magical weapons and armour from fighter's tournaments as a whole or just certain items. Many characters that would enter into a worldwide fighter's tournament will have achieved a certain level of epicness. This meaning that these characters have logged hundreds to thousands of hours. They have also built their reputation, good or bad, to a level where they have become famous. This also means that during the course of these characters' lives they have acquired many rare items from incredibly difficult quests or as gifts from their deities. These items become part of the characters and help attribute to their epic reputation. To make them compete without these items would give characters with less reputation, less hours and less wealth an advantage that is unfortunately not owed to them. During friendly matches I would not see setting the rules to disallow magical equipment as a problem. However, in a global tournament where fighters compete to see who is the best, characters should be allowed to use the equipment that they have earned and has come to be a part of them.

Re: Tournament questionnaire
Would be cool to have guild NPCs join in on the action and challenge PCs.
Don't know if any single one of the guild NPCs can beat an lvl 50 character, but i'm willing to bet some can come close.
