What about the guards opening the gates for characters which Waterdeep is their hometown?
Either they always open for them, or the waterdhavian character must say at least once to the guards "Hello, my name is XXXX", then the guard replies "Ahhh, it is you XXXX, I will open the gates for you". Then from that moment the guards will always open the gates to that character.

Re: Waterdeep Gates
Sounds like an idea that'd be fun for a newbie quest.
I trained up double-edged bananas because the uber-plantain of doom I scored from the beehive quest was the best weapon in the game. Now it's being treated like a bug and they have gimped its damage! That's not fair! My character is ruined!

Obstacles are those dreadful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal.

This could probably be coded in as a qbit that the guards check when the character enters the room.
I like the idea and have wondered about the gate guards to all starter cities recognizing that characters are from that city.
