Dropping in
Dropping in
I wanted to greet you all officially.
I got here about a week ago, and have had a warm welcome from some players already IC'ly and OOC'ly in game. I haven't been much of a Roleplayer, yet, as I am developing my backstory as I go at the moment, so the patience you folks have exerted is much appreciated! You folks have a pretty well thought-out MUD, here, and so immersion hasn't been the problem - just where my character fits into your world as yet.
I was recommended this site from a coworker who has played here since 2008 or so, so she and I bounce a few ideas off here and there and that has helped me get a bit of a start as well.
I look forward to seeing you in game! I enjoy seeing your adjectives, but forgive me if I have a bit of trouble 'looking' at you and knowing exactly what I am seeing. One time this interesting Human came in and did this fabulous smote, but I lost it in the scrolling when I 'looked' at him - and I didn't know how to use the HTML client well enough to see what he said.
There are many, many commands in the game - and I haven't really played in Forgotten Realms with this kind of depth in RP - ever; so its a large learning experience.
Thanks to the website developers here for the amount of help files on the site and in game. I am still navigating through most of them, and I think that will only take years to complete! *grins*
I will be online about twice a week, or so - but I am going to take my time here and get this character right. I am in no hurry to build a character and then regret hasty decisions. Currently I am level 2. So expect me to meander through the beginning phase of the game. Once I get situated, I will start the metagame to back up my RP.
Thanks for the welcome so far, and good roads to you all!

Whoo! Welcome home, and hope the learning curve treats you well! Always feel free to ask questions, and always feel free to take your time learning, as it is a large game with many many facets from RP to stats to combat to exploration! Good luck!

Hello there, I am also new as of two weeks ago and I have the same opinion. I have played 3rd Edition for many years and have read many of the books throughout my life so this game seems perfect for my liking. I've played other RP muds but this one is hands down so far my favourite. Hope you enjoy it as much as I am and have fun doing so.
See you in game and winds carry you.

Welcome to both of you, Mattrik and Thaelyn. Have fun! Glad to have you play with us.

Welcome to the family, and best of luck in the kingdoms! Looking forward to seeing both of you in game.

Welcome welcome.

I trained up double-edged bananas because the uber-plantain of doom I scored from the beehive quest was the best weapon in the game. Now it's being treated like a bug and they have gimped its damage! That's not fair! My character is ruined!
Re: Dropping in
So far it seems I have spent more time within the Realm of the Dead than within the city. So many helpful people have come to my aid when I feel a hinderance.

While I can't say I've had the pleasure of retreaving your corpse yet, I can say that most who do this on a regular basis--Areia included--don't feel a burden at all from doing it! We've all been there. After a while you'll get a hang of how to avoid situations that might end in your brains splattered all over the ground, just takes practice!Thaelyn wrote: So far it seems I have spent more time within the Realm of the Dead than within the city. Re: Dropping in
Welcome aboard!
I'm glad to hear you (and Thaelyn) are enjoying the game. I look forward to meeting you when you feel comfortable enough to role play with others.
Remember, help is usually just an ask away if the help files and forum posts don't give you the answer you're looking for.

Re: Dropping in
I am taking my time and learning the game before making too many moves. I am currently Level 2, and haven't spent any points on stats, feats, or skills, yet. This will keep me a blank slate for a little longer. I can't believe fighters get 11 (Eleven!!) extra feats, and Rangers have to deal with stock. That caused me to take a moment to think about my character development a little bit... But I chose to stick it out with my original character design and keep him a Ranger. So with all of that nonsense out of the way .. I can Begin.
Beskytter has helped me start my faith with Tempus, and really that faith fits my character design very well - so I am already really enjoying the RP I have had, here. For a spunky little Halfling with a big axe, its been a great start!
I am learning the commands - and learning more and more about the game each time I log in. If you ever see me "looking up from my books" I am taking myself out of a help menu to interact with you.
For now, I am going to train in brawling in the Spookery... and punch dummies for a living. I want to put my brawling in line with my axe, throwing weapons, and someday everything in line with my skinning knife. A Ranger using slings? Yeah, that will be me...
One thing I am curious about along that line, the staff sling... as soon as I saw it in game, I wanted to become a grandmaster with it, both as a melee and ranged weapon. I would assume they are rather rare, but I am wondering if there is a way to craft one. If not, then my character's journey will include 'seeking a decent walking stick.'
My end game will show me exclusively using the weapon.
Again, many thanks for the great welcome, here on the boards and out in the game. I won't be online for a little while as my computer's mainboard just died on me (I am at the library right now) and I had to send it off for repair.
Hopefully when I die, it will be a good death - so asking for a res won't be too embarrassing. LOL

Re: Dropping in
Rangers in this game do need some love... I felt like I couldn't play a Ranger the way they are meant to be played, here. To some degree, yes, but many things feel like they are missing.
To that end, I decided to alter career paths and become a Fighter. For a new player, it is a kinder class to play.
See you out there!

I think it's fair to say that in 99% of medieval fantasies. fighters are always the easiest class to start with. At least in my experience.

It's the class I go for first in any game I play if barbarian isn't an option, even though wizards and healers are by far my favorite. Though I will say, after having spent some more serious time playing fighters, it surprises me just how much depth there actually is to the class, considering it's relatively simple to play. There are just so many awesome builds and character developments one can get out of that guild.

There's Merit in almost all builds. Even though dnd tends to favor one type over the rest, I can say on FK I can see an advantage to almost all types

Re: Dropping in
Once I am more familiar with FK (there is simply TONS of info, here) I am sure I will develop a Ranger at some point. They are my favorite class.
At my current stage, I realized everything I wanted to do with my character fit in more with a Fighter than a Ranger. So, my character is the same, and man I am glad I re-rolled. I went a bit quick through the intro the first time, and this time trained up and did a lot better at the start.
Thanks, everyone for your support!

Max level/skill ranger checking in!
Rangers CAN be done well, but definitely shoot for fighter for your first alt and learn first, because while you can be strong and powerful as a ranger you really need to be familiar with the game to do so!
Good luck! :)

Re: Dropping in
I need some help. I want my character to work on mastering the sling staff. Is there anyone who would sell one, or is there any decent way to get one in Waterdeep? I am hoping he uses this weapon throughout his career, and though he begins with his trusty axe - his RP as a wanderer has him putting it down and picking up his "walking stick".
I would like him to set down his axe as soon as possible so I could RP him becoming less and less a forester and more and more a wandering fighter.
Thanks for the help so far - it has been really great! Let me know what my options are to obtain this weapon, and I will RP that process out.

Re: Dropping in
IC things like this should be handled ICly. I'd suggest asking characters Mat might know or hanging around Waterdeep's market or Ardeep some. Lots of PCs hang around those places in their free time.
Forgot to mention, the IC message boards are also super handy.
(Edited to include some things my spacey brain missed the first time.)

Thanks, this is the kind of thing I needed to know... is an IC board in game?
