Using Cmud to 'map'

Post by Mattrik » Fri Apr 15, 2016 6:12 pm

I am pretty new to all of this, and I am trying out CMUD to see if I want to buy it outright. It has a mapping feature that I am not sure how it works. I attempt to configure it to automatically map out rooms I go to, but somehow it never 'draws' the new rooms. I also wonder how to actually use the thing besides a nice way to see and scroll all the text.

I have clicked on a lot of buttons, but it looks pretty complex. Is there any other MUD program out there that might be a better one to use for Windows 10? Zmud does not work on a Windows 10 machine.

The zMUD download from this site works for Windows 10. I understand that some people have had issues with it, but neither Mele or I have encountered any issues on Windows 10 (and I use it 75% of the time).

Also, go ahead and check out Tin Tin + if you want to be a little adventurous; it's a Linux program, but you can run it on Windows with a little work and the work is described in numerous YouTube videos. To my knowledge, TT+ doesn't have native mapping (or really any frills), but it's a clean, workable client.

Personally I use MUSHClient (on Windows 7, but I guess it could work also on Windows 10) and for mapping, when I need to, I manually do it with a program called Map Designer → http://chrisvall.com/coding/mud-map-designer-v1-10

I use Zmud on 10 and have no issues and I've been using the 30 day trial for some 600+ days because I haven't gotten around to buying it yet.

The VT system is immensely helpful for healer types, and I probably wouldn't play if I don't have VT functionality. Can't speak for mapping.

I use CMUD but I've never tried the mapping function.

I'm old fashioned. If I want to map an area, I get out my graph paper and draw it by hand.

I hate to say it, but I get too confused as I go around places - I get lost pretty easily reading partial street names from the MUD headers. A lot of times I am following someone who is running, and that is never a good thing for me.. so mapping things out by hand isn't necessarily an easy thing for me to do..

I was hoping that at least I can get an idea about exits and names of places I had been, so I get a rough idea what my character would know as they go around Faerun.

Does Zmud have a good mapping program?

At a quick glance through zMUD's helps and references - I use zMUD but never its mapper - it looks like mapping is fairly well supported, though unfortunately seems to have been built with the end goal of botting in mind.

Like anything advanced in these sorts of clients, it'll probably take a bit of learning and tinkering with, but zMUD does have that five-million day free trial, so... Can't hurt to download and try it out. ^^ I can say that the client has worked pretty well for me with anything else I've needed.

In my experience, just walking around the game, spending some time to remember landmarks and such when I got lost was enough over time to get me comfortable going pretty much anywhere. (Except for the thousands of new rooms added recently.. Tons of new things to add to the mental map!)

I downloaded the Zmud, and I like it a lot! Thank you very much for the link! I may not be auto-mapping with it, but I like the editor interface it has, and think I can make it work. Better not to use auto-mapping if I can help it anyway, IMHO. Now that I think about it anyway. I will definitely purchase the program once the 30 day trial is up.

You guys are a lot of help. I have never played a MUD before, but I am learning.

Our of some 30 gazillion possible deities, I have found a few I think I can follow - and Mattrik is coming along nicely - and overall I am looking forward to being here for a long time to come.

Level 10 is on the way, and from what I hear, a lot of the game opens up after you hit that land mark. Looking forward to it!
