Is it possible to flee from overworld NPCs?
Is it possible to flee from overworld NPCs?
As per my topic title, I've had this issue happen a few times, where the NPCs run into the room before I can move anywhere else after fleeing which leads to my character's death because the NPCs can chase far too quickly for it to be possible to flee from them unless you're on a road or flee into an area where they can't go due to code restrictions.
Is there a way to prevent this that doesn't involve class-specific measures or feats? Is there an item besides a potion, because those are both extremely expensive and prone to failure in combat, that could get you out of combat on the overworld?
Note that I'm gonna just ignore all suggestions that involve anything akin to "set your speed to run", because that's exactly what I did and the NPCs still managed to get into the room about ten to twenty seconds before the lag wore off.
As far as it goes, this is a newbie death trap as well as a trap for anyone without darkvision or who cannot react to the "you hear footsteps" due to movement lag.

Rycird walks up to the seemingly comatose woman, then reaches forward to poke Areia in the forehead, keeping his finger there and lightly pushing her head back and forth. 'See? Dead.'

Re: Is it possible to flee from overworld NPCs?
If traveling on foot, successfully getting away from a wilderness mob is as good as impossible, unless the last room you were in happens to be one into which the mob cannot move. Because as you said, the lag even on speed run is just too much.
But there are several things one can do to increase movement speed and thus make fleeing in the wilderness very possible, and several others one can do to avoid aggressive wilderness mobs altogether. All of these are easily accessible to any class, though I don't feel it appropriate to post them here.
Definitely agreed that wilderness travel can be extremely dangerous for those who haven't yet figured out some of these tricks. No real opinion on whether that's a good or bad thing--I died countless times myself when I first started but eventually got the hang of it. I would suggest to any new player that he/she seek out experienced travellers in the game to discuss strategies for keeping out of trouble and getting away from it when it finds him/her.

Your speed has to be significantly faster than the mob chasing you. So if the mob is flying or soaring you cannot outrun them. apart from non mundane means it's as simple as that.
The only exception is running outside of their zone. I.e. You walk into a hill giant and then flee back to road or plains.
This is the case in dnd in general. Something larger than you can usually move much faster than you. The key here is to buy dark vision potions from PCs, I know a couple of PCs that sell them for quite a reasonable price. Or well, adventure in groups and avoid mountains / ask the kind of areas that are more dangerous than others IC
I will note, the running out of their effective range is covered in help cheating, please do not stand one room away from a mountain and used ranged to kill stuff without engaging it in combat.. However, I would see walking into it and fighting it straight then fleeing out of mountain to be perfectly acceptable if you're losing.

I trained up double-edged bananas because the uber-plantain of doom I scored from the beehive quest was the best weapon in the game. Now it's being treated like a bug and they have gimped its damage! That's not fair! My character is ruined!

Well yeah, shooting at it from a distant room that it physically can't access because of hard code would be major abuse. I'm not the kind to abuse that code, but I have run back to the road after running off into a hill giant once before.
Still, if there's a way not to die when a group of ogres runs into your room in the wilderness and you're still lagging from movement, then I can say I'm content with these answers.

keep fleeing till you run out of stamina whilst sending a tell to a wizard to summon or gate to you.
A high dexterity character with improved initiative should get pretty lucky and go high up in the round, meaning he takes much less damage than just standing there and fighting defensively Not full proof but I've gated and saved a people a couple of times. Only takes roughly 3 seconds for me to get anywhere in the game as long as it's possible to teleport there.
Only other way that I can think off is supplicating for a recall from your deity
And there are items that stop PCs and NPCs both from leaving a room, but that's as much as I can hint toward. Find one and experiment with it.

Is there a way to determine what room a mob won't come to so that you are NOT breaking the rules? I have a character that sometimes uses a crossbow, and I don't think he's ever done this. However, I'd hate to find out I was accidentally doing it. NOTE: This does not mean hill giants from the road or plains or something equally obvious.

Not really. Some are just more obvvious than others.
Far as I've played, its perfectly fine to used a ranged attack to get the first hit in then move into fight regardless.

From what I was told before, you don't get XP for mobs you shoot at a distance, so there's very little point in killing them outside of the room you're currently in.

Right. It's not a matter of getting XP from a distance; it's a matter of getting in the first shot as well as a bit of "shooting" practice.Ungtar wrote:From what I was told before, you don't get XP for mobs you shoot at a distance, so there's very little point in killing them outside of the room you're currently in.
