Hello, New person here.
Hello, New person here.
Hi,
TL;DR: I'm a noob, wanting tips and guidance. Thanks
I created a char a few days ago, A Human Wizard. I have a few questions, maybe a lot actually.
1- I struggled in the newbie zone, none of my offensive spells landed and instead opened me up for a strong hit. I'm level 5 now and still rely on my dagger than my spells.
2-Regaining spells take too long! sat and rested, stared at my screen for ten minutes before doing something else. I came back about 15 mins later and i'm still not fully spelled up
3- Waterdeep is huge! Where is everyone? Where can i find someone to give me IC information like where's the illusionist guild or who can train my level or teach me meditate (if it helps my poor spell replenish rate) What should my Wizard know? what gear? etc.
4- Is the game as big as this map? If so that's awesome!
Not moaning just want some help and guidance, I feel lonely in Waterdeep. I helped a guy light some lanterns (a quest) then got lost finding the Inn for payment. Getting lost is a daily occurrence. I do find the game fun but I have no idea what I am doing. Also this is not my IC name I already had an account from when i 1st tried this game but this time I'm giving it a proper go. I'm looking for good RP and PK and from what I have read I can find that here.
Thanks

Re: Hello, New person here.
First of all, welcome and glad to have you!
Below are my own opinions as to how to go about starting up on FK. It's definitely nothing official... So!
Frankly speaking, a wizard being your first PC will have you overcoming many difficulties that might make the game more frustrating than fun at times. I personally always encourage new folks to start out with a fighter or some other warrior-type to learn all about FK, then go on to the more complex classes like casters etc. Your magic is going to be fairly weak and pretty rarely used (unless you want to be resting/sleeping/meditating more than actually adventuring) for a while. Once you get more spell slots and a higher meditate skill, spell regen gets much better. Level, say, 16ish is when, with a decent meditate skill, spell regen isn't quite so unbearable as to keep me from actually using the spells I prepared in anything but emergencies. There are little tricks (e.g., certain spells/spell combinations) that can drop some of the lower level mobs pretty easily, but that much IC detail isn't appropriate for OOC fora, so I'll leave that to the find-out-ICly category. As far as struggling in combat, you will do so as a solo wizard, even up into the mid and high levels, no matter your spells/stats/feats/etc. Best I can say there is to do what D&D wizards do--find a dumb fighter to take all the hits for you while you stand safely back and throw your spells. Never underestimate the value of decent skill levels with your spells. Power leveling a caster--wizards especially--is never a good idea unless you want to be the weakest 50th level PC ever.
Waterdeep is huge. The entire game map is just absolutely massive. People who have played here for years (I'm one of them) still get lost in some places, and new areas and wilderness adds are being put in very regularly. Try to learn landmarks, always remember that recall is your friend (until 10th level), and try to group up. Even getting lost while grouping has made some pretty fun RP in the past for me, so don't worry if it does happen. There are also maps you can buy in-game, though with all the updates, I can't say how accurate they might be. Waterdeep's market square is where you'll most easily find folks who're just hanging around. Almost everyone you find there is super happy to help, as long as you try to keep things as IC as possible and RP your character somewhat well. I myself hang out there sometimes for the sole purpose of being available to help if any newbies show up, and I really doubt I'm the only one. That's where you'll find other people looking to group, too, so MS is a really good spot to know.
If you have OOC questions or questions you can't really figure out how to phrase ICly, the ask channel is always there for anyone, and we do our best to take and handle questions as quickly as possible and are always glad to do so, so don't hesitate to ask!
As a note, I would suggest having a look over the PK and relevant helpfiles if you've not already. Few people come here actively looking for PKs, and those who do usually don't last long. It's definitely allowed and definitely does happen, but shouldn't be the ultimate goal of anyone here, I think.
So, I hope that answers... At least one of your questions--hopefully more, lol. Hope you have a good time here!

Re: Hello, New person here.
I've been playing over ten years and when I start a new wizard it's still frustrating! It takes a lot of work starting you. You really need to rely on companions to help keep you alive, lol.
BUT. Once you get to a certain point as a wizard you can hold your own. There are some wizards in the playerbase that can probably wipe out anyone that challenges them. So if you're persistent and put in a lot of work for them, they really pay off!
(Also, once you gain the meditate skill, spells come back much faster).

Thanks to both of you, you have boosted me with confidence. I will look for the market square I don't believe i have found it yet On the power leveling front I guess I should stop leveling and concentrate improving my skills not really sure how i do that. I haven't noticed any skill increase in the 5 or so hours i have played.

Re: Hello, New person here.
Offensive spells don't get powerful enough to do what comes naturally to one's mind when they play a wizard. I've found the easiest way to playa wizard is to in large, prepare defensive spells like armor and shield then have at it with a quarterstaf more so than a dagger. I recently began a 12 str wizard that leveled a lot faster than my original this way which surprised and delighted me.
The trick to navigating Waterdeep will be different for each person but in large, I make mental check points. The guard at the gate next to that graveyard in the beginning was one. if i move onto a street I don't think I've been on before I walk back to him and take a different exit till i recognize a familiar street.
Once you reach level 5 don't forget that yelling is always an appropriate option to spur people to find you. Especially if you yell something like, So. everyone asleep in this city I see? Though that may not be your style.
As for PK, I suggest once you're comfortable enough here finding someone who is also open for PK, has read help PK and enjoy sit also will probably be the key to opening up that side of things. I myself wouldn't mind an adversary for pk. And if interested, you can always PM a player myself included looking for that kind of relationship with one of my characters so it can be more organic once we're both logged in and playing the game.
I also agree with most of what has already been said above though. Finding someone to xp with you will be your quickest way to level as a wizard. As any low levle class really but mostly as a wizard. A good way of looking at it is being the geek who's not very impressive in high school but once he hits the job market and has gained some experience working for that web design out sourcing company for a few years he can rock worlds to pieces.
it's kind of like that. At Middling to high levels you can strike phenominal powers and utilities, some not open even to clerics.
In the mean time, being low level wizard means you can appeal to other higher level wizards for a very interesting mentor apprenticeship relationship. Or a broader apt student looking for any advice kind of repore. Because of the setting, if a powerful wizard isn't evil, they are usually eager to pass on their form of wizardry and teachings and spoil you against all the other wizards trying to do the same to his / her style.
At teh end of the day, the wizard class is in large, VERy scholarly and pressing that part of your roleplay will lead you down so many rabbit holes that leveling will sometimes be forgotten in the background once you've built up one or two regular contacts in the city.

I trained up double-edged bananas because the uber-plantain of doom I scored from the beehive quest was the best weapon in the game. Now it's being treated like a bug and they have gimped its damage! That's not fair! My character is ruined!

If you get stuck again or have any more questions while playing, using the ask channel (i.e. ask blah blah blah) should get you some help.

Re: Hello, New person here.
Thanks for all your replies. As someone suggested I found my way to the market square which is indeed busy it's where a Wizard stumbled across me who was very very helpful. There were others as well. I had fun and eager to jump back in, explore and learn.
