Having a significant RP impact with chaotic RL

Post by Brelc » Sun Jun 26, 2016 3:59 am

I am interested in what strategy you all have for impacting the game on short and sporadic play time.

Work, kids, pregnant girl at home make it hard to sit in one place for too long.

It is a struggle not being able to invest the chunks of time to develop RP like I once was able to. It feels like I'm taking more than giving by playing in short chunks of time. It would be cool to see what things some of you busier folk have done.

How short are we talking about here. Like, 20 minute sessions max?

Also, I'm unsure if the game is set up to support *significant* rp impacts as there is no macromanagement of the game accessible to players like owning or running a city. Generally I think the focus is on personal experience but if you wanted to have some kind of wide sweeping effect on the populous I would say the blank answer is using the various communication methods in game to hit a wide audience with something that would spur them. Mail / boards to run retrieval quests like the adventurer's board for something your character would want see practiced in game for something else attractive as reward.

Other than that, I'm afraid when I'm working and only have some 15 minute to spare for my client at a time I just don't do anything that impacting.
I trained up double-edged bananas because the uber-plantain of doom I scored from the beehive quest was the best weapon in the game. Now it's being treated like a bug and they have gimped its damage! That's not fair! My character is ruined!

Brelc, I know exactly (well just about) what you're going through. After I gave birth my available computer time was cut down to 20-60 minutes at odd intervals when my daughter was napping (if I didn't nap myself because I was exhausted with her feeding schedule). Now that she's 25 months old and on a somewhat steady schedule, it's a lot easier to get computer time.

I believe you've had a recent addition to your family as well, so it will take a bit of time to get your little bundle of joy onto a steady schedule. Once they start sleeping through the night, things become a lot better. They'll also probably need at least one nap during the day. My daughter gets put in bed at approximately 9 PM every night and she sleeps through to around 10 AM the next day. Then she gets put in bed for a nap at approximately 2 PM every day and will sleep an average of two to two and a half hours. Sometimes she'll nap even longer! The only time I get to be on the computer is when she's in bed and I'm still managing to net around 130 to 150 hours (or more) every month on the MUD. It's nowhere near the time I used to put into gaming before I had her, but it's enough to keep me happy and generally get some good interaction with other characters.

That's the best advice I can give you. Try to get computer time when your little one is sleeping. If there's a special event happening that you want to attend, try to work it out with your partner to get some computer time. My husband is usually very accommodating to me when I tell him a few days ahead of time that I want to attend an event on the game. If you want to put together an event, again, talk to your partner and arrange a block of uninterrupted computer time for yourself then publicize the event here on the forums.

Best of luck to you!
Helm keep thee.
