I'd start from here and explore the various subsections. :)

Essentially here you create your character belonging to a base class and then you upgrade such class by joining a guild.

For a warrior this menas you can choose to become either a fighter, a paladin or a ranger. Although for a first character I would suggest the first personally. To become a fighter you just need to join one of the fighters guild that can be found around the game. The easiest to find is the fighter guild in Waterdeep.

For a cleric this means you can become a priest or a druid. However to do this there are no guilds, but churches administered by players. You will need to join a faith. You can join a faith also with a character of any other class, but for clerics this is necessary in order to upgrade their abilities.

For wizards you will need to choose a wizard guild, either a specialist one, like illusionist for example, or just become a mage. The easiest mage guild to find is the one in the School of Wonder just north from Waterdeep.

For more information on guilds or where to locate them in game, I suggest you to ask in character in places like the market square.

I hope this has been useful! :)

Welcome to the game! Hope it's enjoyable and eventually becomes as great an addiction for you as it has for me. :D

See you on Faerun!

Welcome aboard! If you can't find the answers you seek in the help files, the ask channel in game (i.e. ask How do I buy ____?) is a great place to get answers. Failing that, you can always post questions here on the forums and people can give you advice.
