Player Dwellings
Player Dwellings
The help file says that player dwellings aren't offered anymore. I'm just curious as to why this was removed; as it is something that I made one of my characters (before I became aware of this restriction) have as a major life goal (not something to be done early or easily, mind).
Anywho, I was just curious.

Addendum: Player Dwellings
I also wanted a place to store my junk besides putting it in various containers in my cart/wagon/carriage... but the NPC what says they handle such things also has a bug warning about it...
Re: Player Dwellings
Well you can get an accomodation, it is not extremely simple but it is allowed again: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=19941
No storerooms for now, however.

Re: Player Dwellings
Dwellings were stopped because more were becoming abandoned than were staying occupied. So I guess the cost-use ratio became too low for the idea to persist. Unsure why old dwellings did not become repurposed.
My guess would be that some in game resource like glory was used to pay for them, or something else that would make taking them away a bit of a cheap move.

I trained up double-edged bananas because the uber-plantain of doom I scored from the beehive quest was the best weapon in the game. Now it's being treated like a bug and they have gimped its damage! That's not fair! My character is ruined!
Re: Player Dwellings
There are so many unused buildings in game, and if they are just remaining unused then perhaps they should be repurposed. Instead of building new buildings, why not let players use them. Of course, I would agree that the rules stated in the player accommodation thread should be followed, including a referral from another person. But that could give all of these empty shops some love and all. Or even do a contest for shop ideas, and the winners would get one of the shops that are deserted for use? Just throwing out my two cents is all.

Re: Player Dwellings
I know there are many characters out there much more established than Alinor (let alone any of my other characters) but I will certainly agree that the idea of one day owning a player dwelling is a big goal. I feel like it shows that a character has established themself in the world. They've put down roots, so to speak, and now have a place to actually call home when they return from their adventures. Having a place to store all of the treasures (or just plain junk) that a character accumulates would be another huge perk as well, of course.
As for the idea of repurposing character dwellings, I'm somewhat torn. If the previous character is well and truly dead (deleted, never to be seen again) then I'm all for it. If the character just hasn't been seen for a while because the player took a break then I don't know what a good statute of limitations should be. I know how bad I would feel personally if I was gone for a while and came back to my character's home and all of the things he had collected where simply gone.

Re: Player Dwellings
In the last few months there have been players coming back after breaks of eight years or more, and some of them did indeed have a dwelling. For experience, in the muds I played in the past, I know that when someone who owned a dwelling returned and found it gone, they left the mud shortly after, never to be seen again. Therefore I fully back what Alinor said. If the character is deleted, then okay, if not, maybe lock the shop, but better leave it be where it is.
For future dwellings, on the other hand, it can be different, as it can be specified that if you don't log for 5 rl years in a row your character loses all rights to the dwelling. That, an agreement well specified in advance, can be a different story.

Re: Player Dwellings
For future dwellings I think that as long as there was some agreement (meaning it is stated as such in the rules) ahead of time, I think that a period of a RL year, or even six months could be good. If the character doesn't log in a single time over that period, then the dwelling is forfeit. Think of it like a lease that's renewed be logging in or something along those lines.
Re: Player Dwellings
The idea of a dwelling had been alluring to me ever since I started playing, of course as long as I've been here it's also been an unobtainable feature. Honestly I think that the "Player Accommodations" idea is a pretty fair compromise. You get a place for your character to "own" and call home, you can take people back to it for private RPing, and honestly use it as an RP prop in as many situations as your imagination will allow you. I wouldn't even be surprised if in the future, if we're good boys and girls, if we would be allowed to add rooms to whatever accommodation we do have. That's just speculation though of course.

Re: Player Dwellings
Dwellings were discontinued because their storerooms became unstable, the original owner of the project left and this new generation of staff agreed to not offer huge dwellings for so little.
They were paid for in platinum and resource gathering.
Accommodations are available now, and a safe place to store a cart without worrying about the contents. It's neater than a storeroom, even.

Re: Player Dwellings
Well, that's the thing. I need a spot to keep my stuff OTHER than in my cart; because I want to take my cart around for craft and trade purposes. But I don't want my personal wardrobe, or my toon's jewelry collection, or my private (non-banked) stash of cash to be at risk in what I intended to be an ore cart.Mele wrote:Accommodations are available now, and a safe place to store a cart without worrying about the contents. Hence, private player storage. ^.~
Re: Player Dwellings
Didn't I see somewhere that you can now get lockable chests and stuff? Would that not suffice? Just curious.

Re: Player Dwellings
Mele is correct about why we stopped offering the standard dwelling system: the sponsor left and there were issues. There are now two methods to accomplish long-term, fixed storage: a storeroom or a cart object. I believe, at this point, that the risk is probably about equivalent. To my knowledge, the last confirmed storeroom failure was in 2012 and Mask has made some changes since then. The bottom line is that the failure rate for either of these is very low, and while we do not guarantee objects stored we do make a good faith effort to help people out in most cases. The problem is reasonably, manifestly fixed.
There are some ideas for player dwellings in the works, but we are testing ways to really make these turn-key and time-based. For now, Talos's accommodations project cited above is the only live option for new dwellings.

Re: Player Dwellings
Speaking personally, and in an unconfirmed sort of way, I've lost a bag in the storage as recently as this year, and I've never had a character (out of around half a dozen or so) use the storage service and not eventually lose their bag (and its entire contents). While I can't rule out user error in some fashion, I tend to think putting things on horses or carts is a lot more reliable, since they both go offline when the player does. Lacking the requirement to be persistent while the player is offline seems to make stables a more 'stable' option for long term storage.

To solve your issue Lyst
Keep your personal items in crates and give them to a mount which you store at a stable and keep all the trade materials in your cart pulled by a second mount.
If you have too much personal stuff that it won't fit in a couple of crates that any reasonable strong mount, like a mule can't carry then you have far too much stuff.
Junkitis kills many people each year...
