The Global Fighter Tournament is Coming Soon
The Second Annual Global Fighter Tournament is approaching soon.
One year ago, the first global tournament was held in this new format. Some established fighters were blocked from entry and many new champions arose. After 37 total matches, the overall winner was Raihan. Raihan is not alive to compete this year and so the victory might go to one of the others: Marcel, Falgorn, Zethanon, or maybe someone totally new?
The most mentioned issue last time was the rule about weapons being the choice of each pair of combatants for their bout.
Historical winners from older tournaments are still banned from competing for the win, but there may be a separate bragging rights challenge one day during the tournament.
A formal announcement with all event details will follow as we draw closer to the event.

Is it alright to reply with opinions about the subject of mundane weapons in the tournament on this thread or will that be for another post?

Is this event only for members of the fighters' guild, or is it open to all warriors and subtype warriors, or any adventurer?Tempus wrote:The Second Annual Global Fighter Tournament is approaching soon.

This is the original posting outlining the tournament.
I am more inclined towards mundane weapons without the use of disarm. I've always felt the skill a little underhanded in a tournament setting, plenty of other times to use the skill. Unless of course we are given the option to replace all our weapons with mundane so it's not much of a difference. I also feel if we don't go the mundane route, we should limit the types of weapons involved. For example, Zethanon wouldn't use her main weapon due to a flag on it.
These are just my thoughts on it.

What Z said. I'd even enjoy mundane armor/shields, too, but if that's not up for question, definitely the weapons. And disarm is awful.

Re: The Global Fighter Tournament is Coming Soon
Agreed on the disarm. My whole opinion on the skill is for another thread but I don't think its appropriate for a tournament.
We should also use Mundain shield and weapons for all fights, but I think mundaine armor would be too much hassle for some. With the exception of supplicated armor. Those pieces should all be banned
Instead of armor, I'd be in favor of removing all amulets and bracers. Basically those items that will together, grant one person a significant AC advantage. Rings included.

I trained up double-edged bananas because the uber-plantain of doom I scored from the beehive quest was the best weapon in the game. Now it's being treated like a bug and they have gimped its damage! That's not fair! My character is ruined!
Re: The Global Fighter Tournament is Coming Soon
So, everyone gets a big sword to whack each other with? What if a character has focused themselves around sword and shield style? They do not have any feats towards 2-handed weapons, and are thus gimped in the entire fight themselves if they try to use it because they do not have the extra focus or damage. Or they do not have the DEX for two-weapon fighting. Fighters already hit frequently enough, so if you take away from a more defensive fighter's AC, then they will always lose. I can agree with the mundane weapons, or even just removing any weapons that have more then the standard hit/damage properties to it, but if everyone is given the same mundane armour and shields, then some fighters are not going to get anywhere. And trust me, it is already hard enough for a shield fighter to compete against a greatsword fighter. But that is just my ramblings on the matter.

I disagree that sword and shield is a hard match against two-handed users. Two-handed users are like Clubber Lang, they hit hard as fast as possible; one can also be Rocky or Apollo Creed and hit hard, but move fast.
But I think what's being proposed is generic, mundane weapons of all types. That's fairly easy to accomplish because all of those generic weapons already exist. Last year, the judges had the ability to produce generic attire for those who so chose (cloth armor); the judges can likewise be given the opportunity to create a variety of generic weapons as needed. Or people can just show up with mundane equipment.
I like the idea of no magical gear (it's something I've enforced at most of my tournaments over the years), but I can also see both sides of the coin: the idea that a rich PC gets some advantage from buying a mundane sword that is masterwork, and the idea that this is just a test of skill and therefore everyone should have the same basic mundane weapons. Maybe this is a choice in matches? Everyone can have generic weapons from a judge, or bring their own so long as they are not magical.
I am undecided on the disarm issue. I see how disarm can be a big deal against non-fighters who do not have grip, but fighters have an array of skills meant to enhance combat (punch, kick, disarm, grip, bash, etc.). Rather than remove these entirely, why not just limit the amount of times they can be used? Old Tempuran contests had limits of three attempts (succeed or fail) built into the rules.

Re: The Global Fighter Tournament is Coming Soon
Limiting disarm to a few uses each I could definitely live with. I just hate to see the fights that turn into disarm contests is all.
And yes, mundane weapons etc., of all sorts is what I and I think others were referring to. So you get your weapon and fighting style of choice, not just some random sword people decide you'll use.

Re: The Global Fighter Tournament is Coming Soon
In my opinion, if everything required must be mundane then the "Holy crap, look at that!" element is lost. Specialized tournaments are awesome and fun, but if this a test of the character's overall ability then I think it should be no holds barred.

Postponed because of the forums mostly.
