Magical Gear Wipe (shops only)

Post by Terrock » Mon Dec 11, 2017 8:29 pm

Out of curisosity, what would people think if all magical items (in stores) - excluding unusual/unique items such as perhaps a dagger that grants a PC night vision, would suddenly dissappear and/or if they became much more rare? For as it stands, stores do seem pretty flooded with them

I wonder this, because as it stands items of +1 or +2 to hit and damage are not very rare or hard to come by. Do you think people icly would care a bit more about their own personal weapons and gear? Would this make magical classes use and/or appreciate magical weapon, divine favor, and magic vestment more? Would potions that grant such go up in demand, would folks group up more to compensate? Of course as this is only talking about the stores, this would not affect pre-existing characters who already own such items, but new characters generated.

Just something I am curiouse about, as I doubt this would ever happen, but still interesting to think about

The stores are almost exclusively filled by players, and they're wiped almost monthly or bi-monthly anyway (the big ones that is). I'm not sure what you're proposing, but +1/+2 weapons still come from rmi. Whether a chance to find them in a store, an auction, or just chance- making it more difficult feels like it would be a strange decision. +2 weapons really are not that common.

Not proposing anything, if I was, this would be under game suggestions :D. I didn't even know the shops were wiped, at ALL, and thats after visiting them a few dozen times.

Ya, they are cleaned out somewhat regularly. One particular merchant for instance only now has two screens worth of stuff after a few weeks since instead of the more than 200 items he had before.

And the RMI in these shops are indeed filled by PC sale, so cleaning them more often would really do nothing except give people a smaller window to find things worth buying. I've actually come to really use merchants for magical gear a lot. Sometimes you can find some really nifty things if you dig well enough through the pile. :D

Were this a suggestion, I'd give it some serious thought. Likely finding it a favourable outcome. Perhaps its simply my contrary nature, but *shops* in a game based on DND was not really meant to be stocked in a normal / natural way.

By this I mean, the shops in a DND game are by no means stocked by other adventurers dumping all their unwanted gear into them for your group to come along and look through. At best, their magical gear is randomly generated using dice and tables. And this makes a huge difference in the variety you will find. As well as evidently, the quantity.

I do find that +2 weapons and gear are not as common as all that. In my three years I've perhaps found 2 or 3 +2 weapons in shops. The other 5 or 6 I've owned came from players, quests or as rewards from special events.

Apart from the fact that some shops have so much gear as to be unrealistic, I don't have an issue with the current system. I don't think there is a problem here to fix exactly. If the aim is to make all magical gear harder to obtain though. To alter the gaming experience, this would be a good first step. Having shops still give you money for selling magical gear to them, but having such things auto deleted after sale so they don't have any resale would be fine with me.

In large though, this would affect fighters more than any other class. And such changes would have to be looked at more closely than it would originally seem. Even though the class is all around hearty. And isn't solely dependant on gear.
I trained up double-edged bananas because the uber-plantain of doom I scored from the beehive quest was the best weapon in the game. Now it's being treated like a bug and they have gimped its damage! That's not fair! My character is ruined!
