I've been reading through some older threads on the trade skills and thinking a lot about how the skills might be improved. I decided to begin by doing some testing on mining. For my tests I used two characters with two test runs of 100 attempts each in two different areas. Below is a description of the characters used, followed by the results of the tests. (Note: I'm including instances of "You find something but destroy it trying to extract it." separately from strict failures because I'm not sure exactly what differentiates the two.)

Character "A" is GM in mining with 23 STR (mining's primary stat) for the tests. No trade focus.
Gondar School 1 - 100 attempts, 21 success, 1 destroy
Gondar School 2 - 100 attempts, 25 success, 3 destroy
Howling Peak 1 - 100 attempts, 29 success, 1 destroy
Howling Peak 2 - 100 attempts, 21 success, 0 destroy
Average success rate of 24%.

Character "B" is Novice in mining with 26 STR for the tests. No trade focus.
Gondar School 1 - 100 attempts, 3 success, 7 destroy
Gondar School 2 - 100 attempts, 4 success, 4 destroy
Howling Peak 1 - 100 attempts, 5 success, 5 destroy
Howling Peak 2 - 100 attempts, 1 success, 7 destroy (Got a gain to Novice-2 towards the beginning)
Average success rate of 3.25%.

I understand the desire to have trades require a real investment of time and effort. In my opinion though, this verges into the territory of just being needlessly tedious.

My suggestion would be that the base success chance (before any bonuses or penalties due to things like stats, ore type, trade focus, or any other variables that I just don't know about) be 5% at Inept, raising by 5% for each subsequent tier. So 10% at Amateur, 15% at Novice...on up to 50% at GM. This would have two affects that I feel would both be beneficial.

First off, I'm guessing that the higher success rate would likely increase the rate of skill gains and therefore somewhat decrease the overall time required to GM the skill. Secondly, I don't feel that it is unreasonable at all for someone who has invested the time to GM a skill (even if that time has lessened somewhat) to have a 50% chance to actually succeed and get something from it. I could even argue that a higher rate would be reasonable but I don't want to get carried away with it.

Why would these be beneficial? The short answer is that this is a game, and it's supposed to be fun. The long answer is that while I don't feel that every single character should master every single skill out there, I do feel that if a player wants their character to be a miner then they should be able to do it with a reasonable investment of time and effort. Not get discouraged partway through (or decide not even to start) because they don't want to spend however many hundreds of hours (which could mean months upon months of RL time for people who don't spend every waking minute on FK) working at it.

If you haven't already, just wait until you do similar tests with smelting. I kept track for a few months just out of curiosity, tracking metals by their type and what grade ores ended up at what grade ingots. After a couple thousand pieces, the conversion rates at GM proficiency with 26 STR and something like 20 CON even for the mundane metals like iron or copper were in a word abysmal.

Back on topic, I agree that, while trades should definitely have some challenge, they should be a little easier than they are now, mining most especially. If not easier, at least more involved or RP-oriented. Decreasing the difficulty of successfully finding ore would be one way to do so. Another might be somehow to allow PCs to craft online while not making it as possible to craft a hundred swords in an hour.

It would take work on the hard code to do any of these low-level changes, though. The best sort of solutions given the circumstances, I think, would be implemented by area builders. They can't do things like make mining easier per se, but potentially they could do things like randomly intercept the mine command and have a small chance to produce small stone objects that could be made into bullets (hey, gives me another idea: area-coded stonecraft/sculpting), workable diamonds and crushable rubies that lapidarists could turn into spell components, so on. Honestly there is a lot, if not super low-level stuff, that one can do with area code; there just needs to be someone(s) dedicated enough to the cause to bring it to life.

I've only just started actually recording any data on smelting, but I know from having GMed smelting also that there's a disappointingly high probability of things like an outstanding lump of ore turning into a low-grade ingot. I was just taking things one step at a time with the mining post first. Also, the fact that I haven't come up with what I consider any good solution in my mind yet. Having online crafting also is another hope of mine because as I think I've stated in other places, I feel that forcing a player to keep a character offline in order to accomplish something is the exact opposite of what should be done. Again, I just haven't come up with any kind of better solution in my head that I felt worthy of suggestion.

Back to the mining though, I do realize that it'd require hard-code changes. I've just never been quite clear on if Mask or anyone else is actually still doing any work on the game at this point, other than maybe major bug fixes, so I figured I'd go ahead with the suggestion anyway. I do really enjoy this game but just like with anything there can always be improvements so I wanted to put this out there in hopes there'd be a small chance of it being done.

The only thing I've really been able to come up with in my head for online crafting is something along these lines:

Say a dagger requires 10 hours of offline time. You'd start the project like is currently done and could then log off and let it work it's course. Or you'd stay logged in and type a command (workforge or whatever) that's on a one-minute RL timer which would take off something like one-half of an hour. The command wouldn't block you out from RPing or talking but would make it so you can't move from the forge without it canceling out. You could also fail at the check which would add an extra half-hour or whatever. All of this would also carry over between both the offline and online crafting.

I'm probably not explaining it very well. It's a very rough idea and would certainly need some tuning for the proper balance.

This is a weepable reality when you're GM at smelting and you're working on some precious, hard to come by metals to work into ingots. The amount of time it takes to GM smelting is far less than the time it takes to get any sort of improvements on mining. It's mostly just idling work, as if one did actually RP during the whole thing, and be reasonable with it, it would take years to get any sort of improvement each time.

I don't have any sort of solution to offer in turn, but wish to express my own frustrations with the code. By now I've already invested way too much time to not see it to completion.

While I do feel that smelting could certainly use some fixes itself, I think that an increased success rate in mining could possibly help in a small way due to simply having more ore to work with. Sure the final ingots are going to be a really odd spread of qualities but there will be more of it there to combine to try and improve. Again, it's not a fix but it could help in a small way.

I've weighed in my support on almost every other crafting overhaul thread so I wanted to state my general support here as well.

To trade skills specifically. I remember previously suggesting the implementation of an assist command that when assisting someone else who had a skill you were trained it, it could add a bonus. Here I can see having a higher quality and find rate because someone is grouped with you and assisting only b a positive thing.

To soft code options, I agree. There are a lot of options to make this route more attractive, but its an inefficient fix for the number of builders we have to make new areas just dedicated to this topic or to reconfigure old ones. The game in general I feel, requires a hard code update and perhaps someone else can weigh in with specifics but it seems there was quite a few changed to the hardcode spanning 2005 to 2012, but nothing really after that?
