Paladins are a hard character to want to be..
The path is frought with many problems.. which is why there are so few to begin with... and why even less remain as time goes on.
They are saught after, looked up to, bashed down, and ultimately given a lot to bear..
Beyond all this, in the life of my character thus far as trying to become one.. it has been fulfilling more then most will know.
It is an excellent class, worth the extra effort.. least in my own mind..
I hope to see more with the passing of time, maybe you, who reads this now, may consider making one someday..
It is not impossible, but the task is one you must follow through. Never give up, be like that paladin you want your character to be, and eventually it is not about becoming a paladin, but being one as your character..
May your duty be a joy...

Whence first this mud came about Paladins were like a second class fighter, no real fun in becoming one. Rangers had more to do and atleast you didn't have to buy food. Now instead of the "sign here'" to be accepted requirement as is for the fighters you actually have to do stuff and thats where th fun is. Especially in the interaction with others, something I did quite infrequently as a ranger.(ie no quaint times around the MS fountain)
Now this whole squire thing has given the class a plus. Not having played much, I can't comment too much about it. I have not even taken my first lesson, yet. None the less I've had a hoot all the same. If the lessons continue on this or even expand the enjoyment then this would give me the notion of making a perpetual squire. If you want to level, then choose a fighter, if you want to see the world then a ranger's the best choice but for interaction with others you can't go better than with a Paladin.(mind you, I haven't played thieves or wizheads yet, so my wisdom is impaired a bit.)

Paladins....
Well, I always considered paladins to be on the same lines as a good-aligned thief or a priest of a evil deity. Great characters, if you are up to the time and effort they require to make them good. The greatest character I have ever played was a difficult play, but the rp that came from it was one of a kind in my experience. I would not like everyone to try a paladin, its just like a drow or a dwarf, some characters are just not for everyone. But for some people, like the so few paladins my characters have encountered (interesting as those encounters were), I highly recommend it. There are three types of characters in the world, levelers, socializers, and rpers. Rpers are good paladins and the rest usually are not. If you have time and think you are good at rping, look into a paladin character. The worse that could happen is you increase your rp talents a bit.
Thats it....

RPing A Paladin
Bet y'all were just WAITING for me to pipe up here, huh? *GRIN*
I love roleplaying. I've been gaming for 18 years now and still going strong. Before I discovered MU*s in 1998, I did most of my online "gaming" in chat rooms. No dice. No stats. Just pure roleplay at its best.
I'm still a die-hard RPer. A dear friend (and you know who you are *HUGS*) paid me probably the highest compliment I could ever receive from a fellow gamer. "You're a hardcore RPer. If offered the choice between a longsword +5 or an hour of RP, you'd take the RP!"
It has been a long road for Andreas, but definitely well worth every SECOND of it! I've had nothing but incredible roleplay with this character my entire time on the game. Although Andreas is the second character I created, he is my favourite to play and I have (as of Sat Aug 16 18:29:39 2003) 1623 hours on him. It was more than a RL year from the time I created the character as just a lawful good warrior to the time he was knighted as a full paladin in the Order of the Vigilant Eyes of Helm.
I think it's a tie between paladins and bards in terms of roleplay dependency. In their own ways, they're both the epitome of heroic adventurers with the paladin being all that stands for goodness and right and the bard being the dashing figure of legend.
I've never looked at paladins as being "second class fighters." I suppose if you're only interested in stats and equipment, then that statement might hold true.
A paladin is the mortal representative of their god. They must be above reproach in word, thought and deed. Paladins are the shining examples of honour and good morals. They must adhere not only to the tenets of their faith, but also to a ridgid code of ethical and virtuous behaviour.
Before coming to FK, I'd NEVER seen a system in place where potential paladin characters had to actually take the time to learn about being one AND prove through consistent roleplay that they could be a good paladin. I thoroughly enjoyed the lessons and roleplay that accompanied them. I think this is a FANTASTIC system.
It's been incredible so far and only keeps getting better. Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to roleplay with me and I look forward to many more hours of wonderful roleplay. If it wasn't for all of you, Andreas wouldn't be where he is today.

Helm keep thee.
For players seeking this highly elusive class the work is staggering, but look at the people who have done it. They are pillars of FK. If asked to name a quick five players off the top of your head I bet the paladins we have would be high on the list.
However if one seeks this class and tries to be what a paladin truly should be the question pops up, What is a paladin? It is my thought the best paladins are like Ultimas Avatar.
Valor, humility, justice, compassion, spirituality, honor.
All essential traits. I was speaking with Andreas and a squire to be a week or so ago. When asked if he thought he deserved to be a paladin he replied that yes, he deserved it. So he obviously didn't. Watch out for the tricky questions squires!

While I agree that being a paladin is a taxing RP, I do believe a lot of other players put the same level of RP and dedication into their "everyday" characters, of almost all races, alignments, and classes, even thought it might not be as readily apparent to most people. Developing a character's ethos and morality and then sticking with it through thick and thin isn't just for paladins That said, there are more noticeable consequences for slipping up if you are a paladin, and the paladin class is watched carefully to make sure they are sticking to their guidlines.
Some of the best rping people I have seen belong in the category of paladins, they have become the epitome of the work of those they serve and do not dominate with position and priveledge, instead they become pillars of community and pious warriors of just causes and heir chosen doctrine. Few individuals have patience in association to them, any anger they know is never personal and any passion they feel is to duty. In my eye they symbolize the order of true individual humility and skill to not always use a sword but resolve conflict and solve solution by way of rp and wisdom. Any praise as has been said is naught to them, they do not take gifts or favor anyone more than anyone else. I always enjoy being around palidins in rp, because they give off this aura of service and contemplation without complaint or desire for anything at all. Though I love roleplay with anyone at all I understand that something like the methodical and incredible forging of a paladin knight is something that must create the most patient and rp ready players that walk the mud. So I would like to applaud those that are on their way to becoming a paladin or have achieved hat mantle...
May your armour shine like marble, may your boots ring like granite, may your sword sing like the earthstone and may your rp be like bedrock, strong and durable but capable of great things

Beleave it or not i love paladins, not that i could ever play one. Though I have had alot of good rp experences with a few helmites *ahem* already. Some with Urival and some with alts but always have seen good RP come out of these holy knights. Im glad the system is the way it is and that its hard to become a palidin, that makes only the best rpers and avid mud players get to be one. Witch is fine by me because it creates epic battles and struggles for a few of my charicters and these palidins.
PS- keep up the good work you goodies types, my charicter depends on it *grin*.
Without good, there is no evil -
