Are there Kangaroos in Forgotten Realms?

Post by Ciara » Wed Aug 20, 2003 9:05 pm

Seems a bit random, but. . .could there be kangaroos or the equivalent on FK? I've seen lots of creatures roaming around our mud, some FR-specific, and some things that the real world has. . .and I suppose FR has, too? I haven't really read enough or paid enough attention when I did read said FR novels to notice all the different creatures. So, yea, hence the question -- what about kangaroos? =p

Just curious if anyone has come across anything referring to them, or something similar in the great wide world of Fogotten Realms?

Existense of Kangaroos

I wonder about this, there is so much chance in any form that kangaroos can exist in such a place as faerun or for that matter toril, because the world is a big place and the possiblilities seem endless and magificently big. I mean that give the right temperature and habitat anything can exist be it purple monkies or a kangaroo, it just relies on the time neccesary for adventurers to truly evaluate an area. I mean look at the Beholder race, it is from another planet in the multiverse so it might be that one day kangaroos will walk the surface of toril in one form or another, be it that we have yet to notice them (which is just a shame because they are great animals:) or because they have yet to arrive.

Either way they might be around though I'm not sure.

It seems to me that FR subscribes to a general landmass scheme that is quite similar to the real world. The 'European' section is in the northwest, the 'oriental' in the east. Don't really know enough about Halrua to compare, but if its like southeast asia or india, there ya go, and chult is perhaps a bit like africa, at least insofar as its a jungle and south of 'Europe', along with the 'arab' countries. Maztica is of course 'South America. Now, within this, I would say that if kangaroos are around, they're on the 'Australia' of FR, if there is one. I know there's a whole-world map of FR out there, but I forget what all it has exactly. Anyway, given these real-world similarities, I'd not like to see roos anywhere except on their odd little island/continent or perhaps in the extreme southeast, in that big grassland area north of halrua and south of the sea of fallen stars.

As a side not with regards to shooting your national animal being barbaric, I believe it was Ben Franklin who strongly pushed for Americas national animal to be the turkey. So we almost ended up with the same situation. Can you imagine a turkey on your money holding arrows, with wings spead and tail fanned? How would our post office logo look with a turkey head and wattle instead of the sleek eagle? I can think of more than a few war posters that would be a lot....different, if a turkey replaced the eagle. I am really glad we dodged that bullet.
A goblin, a trickster, a warrior? A nameless terrible thing, soaked in the blood of a billion galaxies. A most feared being in all the cosmos. Nothing could stop, hold, or reason with it. One day it would just drop out of the sky and tear down your world.

Rather then starting a new thread I decided to reserect an old one..

Is there limestone in FR? If not, what would be the closest thing to it?

Yes, there is.

Based on the novels, one can pretty much assume that the chemical makeup of Toril is very similar to that of Earth.

Thank you! Would that go the same for plants?
