Spell Customization?

Post by Nerre » Sat Sep 10, 2005 11:55 pm

I've noticed that some of the more heroic or visible magic-users (Shal Bal of Cormyr, for example) tend to color their spells to a color that they prefer, rather than to a basic spell.

I was wondering if this is at all possible in-game already. If not, I'd like to suggest it as an RP perk of sorts. The colorization could be useful in several spells, from combat (imagine a blue fireball!) to enhancement (a bluish flight spell, perhaps?) to even healing (maybe that wound frosts over with blue sprinklish energy).

On the old forums from a few years ago this was discussed a little. The forums are now gone but I remember this being impossible to code or some such thing. The thing is, I cannot verify since I lack the builder's knowhow and in the course of years there could be new changesto code, what impression I am under though is that colour customiziation was highly improbable because of the degree of coding.

This is a wonderful concept though, a very creative thing to have. In rp you might be able to utilize colour effects with emotes just as long as you do not use it to give yourself abilities that you would otherwise not have. No matter what spell you use, it is a masterful miracle in itself and a sign you have taken time and effort icly to train in the great art of magic. :)

Maybe it could be like trademarks for trades (You can color your spells once they're GMed)?

That's a thought to propose to the coders.

Well, there are only a few trades, whereas there are dozens of spells that could potentially have customizations of this sort. The trademarks in constructing trades are something that could not be created through smotes and roleplay, whereas a differently colored spell is. Rhytania's player used to do something really cool to customize her prayers, by creating an in-game alias like this:

alias cl smote does a lot of cool priesty things that make people feel better. & cast 'cure light' %

It wasn't worded exactly like that, but you get the idea.

If I remember correctly, it wasn't that is was impossible for the coders just time consuming. It took away coding time for the entire game and put it toward one character. I say let if code allows let characters spend their glory and kismet on it. Kismet should at least be checked, you don't want to spend all this time coding for a character that after one month quits.
I am ready to meet my Maker. Whether my Maker is prepared for the great ordeal of meeting me is another matter.

That's also a good point. I wonder if we can get a Coder to chime in on this discussion.
